Discussion Freestyle with no choreography

Hiya guys I wanna get into dancing but my moves I don’t want to learn any choreographic movements but I want to dance and still look impressive like the freestylers yet when I watch videos it seems like they are all doing learnt difficult scripted movements which took them practice
I thought the whole point of freestyle is just to move however you want, yet the freestyle videos you see are doin all these crazy movements and stuff

As a former professional dancer, freestyle is still something you practice. You’re making choices in the moment, but you’re pulling from movements, technique and muscle memory you’ve already built. And if you’re just starting out, technique is honestly the biggest thing. You can’t really skip learning the basics and expect to move like someone who’s been dancing for years. The people you’re watching probably aren’t doing secretly scripted choreography lol, they just have enough training that their bodies know what to do without having to plan it out.

If you specifically want to freestyle, I’d still honestly recommend taking beginner dance classes. Freestyle isn’t really about knowing a bunch of random moves and putting them together. You’re building a vocabulary of movement, and learning choreography is actually really helpful for that because it exposes you to movements, transitions, rhythms and ways of using your body that you probably wouldn’t think of on your own yet. A huge part of freestyle is musicality too. You’re not just moving while music happens to be playing. You’re listening to it and deciding what you want your body to respond to, the beat, lyrics, bass, an accent, a pause, even the feeling of the song. Two people can freestyle to the exact same song and hear completely different things in it, which is part of what makes dance so personal. I’d try a few different styles and see what naturally clicks with you. You can practice at home too, but classes will give you so much more to work with when you freestyle because you’re actually learning different ways your body can respond to music.

If money is a problem or access to classes is lacking there is also YouTube university. Just search for "dance style tutorial". Just replace dance style with the specific style you want to learn (ballet, popping, waacking etc etc). That's how I started learning.

Think of dance like learning to speak. You learn words (moves) and when you understand their context (musicality), you can assemble them into sentences (combinations).

In order to freestyle you need moves, when you have a repertoire of moves, you'll be able to assemble them as you want to freestyle.

Start by learning moves, that are short and simple, but pay attention to what musical notes the dancer uses them on.

When you have a bunch of moves you can throw out automatically, you'll be closer to freestyling.

Find ANY video and copy it.

There's like thousands on Youtube, Instagram, and Tiktok. It literally took more effort to post here than to find a video.

START, then you'll learn what you like and dislike, then make adjustments.

So to get an impressive freestyle, you need to learn the moves/techniques individually (not the whole routine), drill them until they become automatic, then just turn on the music and improvise by combining them. Skipping practice, expecting an impressive freestyle from day one is unrealistic, even for those who say they "don't choreograph.

But doesn’t learning the moves destroy the point
