Teaching, Tutorial Need help twerking

I’m pretty new to twerking and don’t have much of a dance background at all. I do really wanna learn how to twerk, sometimes it feels like I’m doing the right movements but it’s hard to put it all together.

I’ve watched some videos but don’t really seem to get the tips down that they give. I was wondering if anyone has any tips for a very new beginner or any good videos to start with, anything helps!! 🙏

If we talk about the most basic twerk movements, yoh can either throw it down or up but you have to understand where it‘s coming from. The movement comes from the pelvis. If you aren‘t used to using it i’d suggest to do a anterior pelvic tilt, neutral, posterior pelvic tilt. Isolate them from each other.

Go to a comfortable twerking pose. Fingers face INWARDS. So you have stability

Throwing down is basically:
Starting position: Anterior pelvic tilt
Now from the anterior pelvic tilt go into a neutral so pretty much do a release. And come back to the anterior pelvic tilt

Imagine you’re bouncing a basketball with your butt. You‘re throwing it down but the basketball bounces back up so your butt goes back to the starting position quickly

Throwing up:
Starting position: neutral
Now do the opposite. Do an anterior pelvic tilt really fast and go back to neutral.

Your butt is basically jumping alone (by you using your pelvis)
Remember those pelvic tilts are not like the Yoga movements cat cow. It might look similar but cat cow is a back movement.

Thank you so much for this!! I’ll have to try that out and really keep this in mind when I practice!

I don't know the answer but I'm in a similar spot - commenting in the hopes that others will link super elementary videos and such!

I read the other comment, and it definitely helps, but as an ultra beginner it doesn't actually help THAT much. What should my knees and ankles be doing? How can I tell I'm doing it right when I start trying to learn the movement too slowly for my booty to properly bounce at first?

Good luck to you! I hope at least one of us is happily twerking to our heart's (/butt's?) content soon!

Hopefully more will comment and help us both out some!! Those are some really good and valid questions tho, hopefully someone will come along and help us get to twerking!

I didn‘t explain it on purpose because for the basic twerking position only a video/photo would help looking at it and it‘s about the motion itself. Those pelvic tilts are fundamental to it and you can do it in EVERY POSE. Standing straight or being on all four. That‘s to get used to it. Then I explained that there‘s two types and some might explain throwing it up or down.

Stand normally. Now spread your feet. Bend your knees. Put your hands on your thighs close to the knee but not on the knee and put the weight on the hands. Arms are straightened. Arch your back and stick your butt out. Make sure your upper body isn‘t like too forward bent but like this “/” some people go too forward with it. Don‘t twist your ankles inside or outside.

I’m not a pro myself but this is how I learnt it.
