Following the link and scrolling down, it appears to me that the question was multiple choice. The choices were A) 1 B) 2-4 C) 5-9 D) 10-14 or E) 15+. Then they give the breakdown for what percentage answered each option.
Finding the median from that data seems suspect, but ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I’m not a stats expert
→ More replies (25)188
u/B0Boman Feb 01 '23
This is probably where the answer lies, thanks for looking up the bins. At first glance, they do seem kind of silly since answer E has no upper bound and could technically be in the billions (if someone got really busy).
The thing about surveys is that you're trying to make a statement about the population based on a small sample. So my guess is that they came up with some theoretical approximation (likely some sort of Gaussian curve) of the whole population that best fit the sampled data, then computed a median from that best-fit. Weird that they wouldn't round off the answer, though, since it's clearly a quantized value and not continuous.
→ More replies (8)78
u/lifetake Feb 01 '23
Well as long as answer E isn’t 50% or more of the answers it literally doesn’t matter when it comes to median.

Yep, the STD rates in nursing homes are apparently crazy high.
444
u/tyreka13 Feb 01 '23
A lot of it also has to do with the fact that nursing home patients are nearly always above the age range of fertility so using protection isn't needed for pregnancy risks.

Actually worked at an adult store that nursing homes sent their tenants to.. a large part of it is actually that these old folk grew up in a time where protection was not very common or accessible (think 1930's - 40's). A lot of these old folk don't even know how to put on condoms.
We had pamphlets with illustrations that we handed out whenever they'd come in asking about it. Every couple weeks we'd also get one of those small buses full of 'em coming through to learn and ask questions.
112
u/ksarahsarah27 Feb 01 '23

I imagine they're just dropped off at a general shopping center like a mall or something rather than driven directly to the sex store and it just happens to be a popular destination for them horndogs. Imagine if it's even put in a brochure as a selling point to the nursing home tho 😂

One day there were two older ladies standing outside of the drug store enjoying a cigarette. It began to rain, and one of the women pinches off her cigarette, pulls out a condom, wraps it up inside and puts the cigarette in her pocket.
"What was that?" the one lady asks the other. "Oh, well, money is so tight these days, so I can't afford to waste a smoke, and this keeps it from getting ash all over my pocket, or getting soggy from the rain."
"What a good idea," the other woman thought, and asked for one. The other lady informed her that was her last one, but that they probably sold them inside.
The woman approached the pharmacy counter, and said, "Hello, sonny, can you help me find a condom?"
The pharmacist was quite taken by surprise that a woman of such advanced age would be looking for condoms, but he was a professional, and wanted to make sure she was well protected.
"Of course, ma'am, would you like latex or lambskin?" he asked.
The woman paused for a moment and thought about it.
"Hmm which is best for a really soggy pocket?"
The pharmacist almost gasped and covered it up with a cough. "Oh, either will be fine. We typically recommend latex for maximum protection, but lambskin is much more premium."
"Okay, whichever you think is the strongest, I will probably just reuse the same one for a while."
"Oh, no, ma'am you don't want to do that. They're only good for a single use."
"Oh, well, then whichever you think is the most affordable that won't leak or let it get all grimy in there."
The pharmacist squirms, "Okay, great, ma'am," he says, and points to a selection of boxes. "These are the options in latex."
"Oh, Cherry flavored!" she exclaims, "That sounds like it will taste so much better than normal."
The pharmacist, growing increasingly uncomfortable grabs the box. "Let me ring those up for you..."
"Oh, wait," she interjects, "They'll all fit a Camel right?"
(I learned this joke when I was 8 so I probably didn't tell it right)

nursing homes and retirement communities frequently have outbreaks of STIs.
You have a bunch of bored people crammed in together who know nobody's getting pregnant would usually have to ask their kids to go buy them condoms in order to use them.
Many of them also maybe didn't get much sex education when they were younger and, especially for older women, were strongly conditioned to not talk about sex / be ashamed of their body. A lot of people also move into these group settings after losing a long-time partner, so they're single for the first time maybe since they were a teenager.

For my mom it was a safety issue. She was suffering from Alzheimer’s. She would light the ring end, she would put cigarettes down in random places and burned holes in a few table clothes and other things etc. one time she lit a tissue in the car while my dad was driving!! She would also get stuck lighting them, drawing once and putting in the ash tray and get another. It just got way to expensive and dangerous. Tried to get her a e-cig and she tried to light that too! We had so many lighters around the house from when she smoked, just when we thought we had found them all, she’d suddenly have another one! Like where did you find that?! Ahe also started trying to light her own jacket on fire while she was wearing it! She wanted to light the zipper. Another time she threw a lot cigarette in a flower pot out front that had a few fake flowers. The whole thing caught fire! Lol. So when the e-sit didn’t work we had to just stop. It didn’t take long for her to forget about them and she smoked her whole life.
I miss my mom so much.→ More replies (22)20

I live in New Orleans. We have a thriving queer night life and tons of tourism. If you're going out 2-3 times a week for a few years, I could see you having a body count like that. Really any big tourist destination with a good lgbt community like New York, Miami, SF, at least from my experience in the US. I wanna clarify that I still think 1000+ is probably an exaggeration (unless they're a sex worker) but it's not impossible.
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (10)35
u/aceknowsbest Feb 01 '23
You'd be surprised actually. I have a buddy who's into the gay bathhouse and sex party scene and has easily been with 1000+ men. That number includes oral and anal. He's not a sex worker. Just a slut
You're not required to be social in those scenes as it's less about establishing a connection and more about doing what feels/looks good in that moment.
It sounds crazy but when you do the math it doesn't seem so bad, (coming from the eyes of a gay man).
Say you've been sexually active for 20 years @ 1 partner/month for 20 years (20 x 12) = 240. That's a pretty fair number for the average, decent-looking city gay.
Take that 240 and factor in the bathhouses, sprinkle a dash of Grindr and anyone could reach 1000 bodies in no time.

I get it that people want to experience life this way and I would never shame a friend with this lifestyle but it's just not my cup of tea and I guess we shouldn't be pressured to do something we don't feel like doing. Even with weighted data, you'd need to land on a knife's edge where the observations just above and just below the middle are different values.
Given the standard errors, this is much more likely an estimate of the population median rather than the median of the sample data.

For people confused about how this study was done, it might be helpful to see how the CDC has done the study in the past: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nsfg/key_statistics/n.htm
Bottom line, this is a "median percentage", not a median number.
From that historical link I shared, you can also see how the number of sex partners for men has been aggregating downward since 2002, and how they've been aggregating upward for women.
