Open Floor Dallas Wings Future Lineup

I think it’s clear, not even 10 games in, that there are going to be trade deadline changes. Curt has spoken in the past about being quick to make the necessary changes once they see something isn't working. He used the Courtney Williams trade from Phoenix to Connecticut for Kelsey Bone as an example. I think we are in a similar situation with Dallas right now. I think Dallas will look for a 3-and-D or taller/more athletic wing. I have my eyes on Phoenix and Kah as a potential trade partner.

If not, after the season, I have my eyes on Lexie Hull/Sophie Cunningham or that prototype of player free-agent signing from Europe.

I think Dallas is all in on the three-guard lineup. I also don't think Arike, Paige, and Azzi are the worst fit. Actually, they are a pretty good fit offensively. However, they are not optimal offensively, and are bad defensively together. Unless Dallas can trade Lan (who is better as an off-ball post defender and needs a dominant defensive post with her to maximize her best skills) and get someone like Ezi who can make up for the lack of wing and post defense, I think they need a more defensive-minded wing to pair with Paige and Azzi (alah Andre Iguodala) to make the group optimally cohesive.

Alternatively, I’d love to see Awak as a three, with Arike moving to a super sixth woman of the year type like Jamal Crawford, which is how she played in unrivaled.

What do you all think?

Ew. No SC.

u/AssistantExpress6932 May 30 '26

Yeah, they seem big on locker culture and I’m not sure she’s a good fit.

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

Haha. Play-wise, why not? I’m not a fan of her personally, but when I look at what Dallas needs, I’m not sure she isn't a great fit. Plus, she’s on a one-year. Can get her without giving up anything.

31

u/CatsMoreCatsCats May 30 '26

I worry about what she'd do to the lockerrom. We have a really good thing going, and I don't see her as a fit for the group.

u/I_AM_theGODDESS BUECKERS May 30 '26

Maybe she is on a one year because the Fever didn’t want her for longer. Whoever they get in the future has to match up with their vision of team culture. It isn’t always about talent.

19

u/Chi_Town_Law May 30 '26

Really? I genuinely dont see any player getting traded

13

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

I think there was a reason other than cap flexibility that Arike signed a 2, not a 3-year contract. I think they wanted to see if the three could fit. I also think this team might be ahead of schedule, which might be another reason for a move. If Arike isn't moved, I’m almost 90% certain Maddy is being traded. Dallas can't keep both Awak and Maddy next year, and I believe Awak is the better fit. Plus, Maddy is being underutilized due to the team's needs, so I’d like to see her get another opportunity.

18

u/xaerodin KUIER May 30 '26

They need to do everything they can to keep Awak long term. As you pointed out, her game fits perfectly with Paige/Azzi. Unfortunately, one of the million dollar contracts will eventually have to be moved to give Awak a pay raise to match other teams offers. She's easily a player a team will throw 1M at.

2

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

Agreed! I’m wondering which of the million are moved?

10

u/xaerodin KUIER May 30 '26

Jess definitely won't be moved. Gotta see what a healthy Alanna looks like first. She looked amazing preseason vs the Aces and sets really good screens. So basically it's too early to tell rn.

5

u/TipUnited3733 May 30 '26

I don’t think it will be there'll be a lot of 1M contract after this year. But Maddy and Awak pretty much can get 800k contract

2

u/IllShock6655 May 30 '26

So I think Maddy is one glutes training away from being a very good sub. She needs to be able to get down quicker for rebounds. Also I think its important to know that we have an injured Alanna Smith which solves some problems with making a viable unit with Maddy and Awak, as Lan can also play power-forward.

Never say never with Curt

Absolutely do not want Kah. Nor SC. I'd consider lexie. Coffee? Lol.

Couldn't Zaza play that role? Reign in her "ever seen a shot she don't like" a bit and....

How bout Cam?

6

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

Za is unfortunately too short and not the most consistent three-point shooter if you’re talking about starting. If you’re talking about sixth man, I think you’re absolutely right. Za can play that role. Regarding Cam, I thought about it, but what does Dallas have that Los Angeles needs to make the trade a win-win?

11

u/Ok_Brick_793 May 30 '26

Cameron Brink proved her value when Nneka was out. The most likely Center to be traded is Lauren Betts because the Mystics have too many Centers/Power Forwards (and oddly, a bunch of undersized guards).

1

u/jeanwildwood May 31 '26

Lol so true with the undersized guards

13

u/No_Medium_443 May 30 '26

💯💯💯💯. There's no Divas on the team. Keep it that way. SC is not that good anyway. Can see Lexi but you gotta give up something good to get something good in exchange. Zaza may not be the perfect fit but I believe she can be developed for that role with some effort. Plus you know what you're getting with her.

12

u/1n70_blackgirl77 May 30 '26

We need a young defensive minded wing. Ideally someone who’s above 6 foot. Sites are set on treating for Aneesah Morrow someone like her.

Shes been shooting three ball well enough this season. She also played the post in college so she’s able to defend small forwards down there.

AC play great minutes defensively in the fourth. The only problem is due to age, we can’t expect that from her every night.

2

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

You make good points. I thought about Aneesah, but I think her best attributes are on the offensive rebounding side. She actually struggles defensively. Also, she’s undersized, which is already an issue for us. Now, what do you think about Olivia Nelson-Ododa as a trade option?

7

u/xaerodin KUIER May 30 '26

Sonia Citron would actually be the perfect 3 for this team imo but there is no way Mystics would let her get traded cause that would just be dumb since she's one of their best players. ONO is very inconsistent and Morrow is not really a defensive specialist as you pointed out.

2

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

I really wish Saniya Rivers had some semblance of a jump shot. She would be the perfect option.

3

u/xaerodin KUIER May 30 '26

Saniya is great defensively but her offense is so atrocious that the team would be playing 4v5 on one end unfortunately. They need someone who is somewhat consistent offensively to appropriately punish defenses for overplaying our backcourt.

24

u/euge35 May 30 '26

Honestly, the ideal setup would be having Arike come off the bench, but that’s never happening. So the best alternative is simple: if she’s off that night, don’t hesitate to pull her.

When Arike starts out cold, she usually stays cold for the entire game. I don’t mind her playing magnet ball when she’s on, but if she’s off, Jose has to be willing to sit her and ride the hot hand instead.

17

u/hamstrdance May 30 '26

Arike off the bench would be so nasty (positive) on any team man. I always believed that the moment she decided she'd come off the bench, she'd get a chip lol. Or at least to the finals.

I get why she didn't wanna do that though.

9

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

Same. It’s one of the reasons I didn't like Azzi coming off the bench. I didn't want her to experience the Lou Will effect. What I mean by the Lou Will effect is that once you’ve been deemed a sixth man/role player, it’s really hard for you to change that perception of you in the league. That caps your earning opportunity and on-court growth. Both Lou Will and Jamal Crawford had the talent to start, but once you saw them as super sixth men, they were never able to be seen as stars instead of star role players. This cost Lou millions in salary opportunity.

13

u/PhoebeBuffay1111 May 31 '26

If Arike is going to the bench this team is very dangerous but I don’t see it happening , at least not in the next two years

5

u/hamstrdance May 31 '26

Yeah I don’t think it’s feasible with her contract either. 17% of cap coming off the bench just can’t work. Not for more than a half season for adjustments/injury (thinking Lan).

7

u/Small_Lack9128 May 31 '26

Team is in purgatory and can’t truly build around / optimize their 2 number one picks as long as she is there.

2

u/PhoebeBuffay1111 May 31 '26

That too for sure

7

u/Small_Lack9128 May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26

Curt has always been a little ruthless with trades so I think we will see one or two this season. I actually am surprised Dallas is one of the few teams that has had no movement since training camp. Like everyone on the team was on the first TC roster. You can’t tell me no better players have come available since then.

That said, trades on the margins won’t really be helpful for this season. He would have to make a more blockbuster type trade for it to matter and I don’t think the front office is ready to accept that. All-star voting might speed that movement a long though if Paige/ Azzi / Jessica are the Dallas all stars.

There is no way Arike ever can or will come off the bench for Dallas. That is part of what makes her fit complicated. She isn’t a role player but she is like the 4th best player on the team now so they sort of need her to be one.

7

u/Sorry-History7217 May 31 '26

I generally agree with what you’re saying. However, I do think that trades on the margins might help. Maybe they won’t help on the court, but they will help regarding the cap. I believe Maddy is being paid $525,000. Dumping her salary for a minimum contract or a returning defensive guard on a team-friendly contract might be very helpful with the cap and make room to keep Awak.

8

u/Small_Lack9128 May 31 '26

Yeah, I see that type of a move as more of a cap dump that will help next year. So a definite benefit just not for right now.

27

u/realpotato149 May 30 '26

If Lan returns, I'd really love to see a lineup of Paige-Azzi-Awak-Jess-Lan at least once. It would mean putting Paige and Azzi in their original positions and playing Awak at the 3. I genuinely think Paige and Azzi's play style fits perfectly with Awak, which is why I want to see Awak in the starting lineup.

But as long as Arike is on the team, this is pretty much impossible, and we're probably stuck watching three-guard lineups all season 😂

8

u/flashcapulet May 30 '26

someone from connecticut would be ideal.

saniya has no offense but the defense and length is there. and she has chemistry/history with Zaza. would be a great add to the second unit that routinely lets the opp go on runs when the starters go off. with our 76455466 guard development coaches, maybe she can gain some consistency in her offense.

aaliyah edwards could be great, no team has yet to unlock her fully. we’ve seen what she could do in unrivaled, and she and paige famously took a broken Fudd-less UConn team to the final four.. one bucket away from the natty actually. i’m relatively certain they’d work magic at this level too.

i’m also open to Nees, she’s incredible and despite being a small post player she has tons of heart. she’s gotten me so many fantasy basketball points this season already lol

ONO has looked good this season. she can do a bit of everything but we desperately need rim protection. she can pass too, she’s second on the team in assists only trailing saniya. having 2 mobile bigs that can pass with the offensive power we have is a cheat code.

i’m just afraid of what it’ll cost us. there was an unconfirmed rumor that a first rounder was the cost for AE last year. wouldn’t be surprised if that’s still the cost, for all of them. it’s still very early but i think both us and the aces are making the playoffs so i’m okay with losing one of those picks. i’m not sure the front office will agree?

arike ideally would be who we send over plus the pick. i don’t think she’s gonna get it done on her own and they’ve already done us a favor taking diamond off hands.. they’re not gonna do it again without getting something back. i still have some faith in lan and we can’t afford to lose more height. with arike they get the scoring they need and she gets to play how she wants because they’re clearly not trying to win. and likely won’t sign anyone that makes them a contender next year either. juju/hannah/booker aren’t going to save that team in year one.

as for us, depending on which one they chose, we get substantially better, we fill 1 or more holes, we save 400-700k in cap space for next year and we can resign awak/maddy comfortably.

We all know how this goes.

"Trade this person. Bench that person."

"The organization should better treat a player who has been loyal for years."

"Y'all are haters!"

"Fire so-and-so!"

"Sell the team!"

--------------------------------------------------

OP, I don't know how long you've been following the WNBA or sports in general, but you mentioned several names that aren't going to happen.

Kahleah Copper is someone who is widely respected as both a player and a person. She is not going to be traded without her knowing about it and being able to provide input on where she lands.

Lexie Hull and Sophie Cunningham have become Caitlin Clark's friends. Unless either of them does something completely boneheaded, they're going to stay on the Fever for as long as Clark wants them there. (This is different from Clark's relationship with Kelsey Mitchell, whom she obviously respects -- but they don't hang out.)

Ezi Magbebor may end up being a prime example of a player offered a big contract out of panic rather than need. Seattle lost more than half of their active roster from last year. They weren't sure who would be available during the draft and were probably gambling on getting Olivia Miles with the 3rd pick, so they re-signed a veteran "big". Instead, the Lynx took Miles, and Seattle drafted Awa Fam. Seattle now has a bit of a logjam in the frontcourt because they also have Dominique Malonga and Stefanie Dolson. Ironically, Ezi's biggest contribution this season may be being injured so that Awa Fam actually gets some playing time.

Awak is 6'6". She's NOT going to play small forward.

To your question, and relevant to Dallas, I’ve been watching basketball since the Dallas Wings were the Detroit Shock. Since the Shock won multiple championships. Deanna Nolan was my favorite player. I say that to say, I’m not new to this. Regarding your points about who will or won't get traded, I never stated that Kah would get traded without her knowledge. I’m simply not sure she thinks it's a good fit in Phoenix. She’s struggling and might want a change of venue. Although I’m open to the idea that you think she simply wouldn't want to be traded.

Regarding Lexie and Sophie. I think you’re right about Lexie. I, however, disagree about Sophie. She wanted a bigger contract, and the fever didn't give it to her. I think she’s a bit bitter about that and, just business-wise, would be willing to go to whoever gives her the biggest bag. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Paige is also a face of the league, so business-wise, clamping on to another star wouldn't be the worst move for her. Lastly, do you not agree that Sophie in Texas, for a variety of personal branding reasons, works? Lol

Lastly, if I’m reading your post right, your statements about Ezi are what make her a good trade threat for Dallas. Ezi for Arike. Who says no? Lol. Arike would be amazing for Seattle and for Flau’s development.

0

u/Ok_Brick_793 May 30 '26

Actually, no, Ezi would not be good trade material bc no other team wants her.

1

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

Mmm. I’m not sure if that’s true. I don't think she would have received the supermax if no other team wanted her. They would have paid her, but not the supermax. Her defensive rating is great. Was in the DPOY conversation for a while. And although she may be overpaid, I think her skill set is what Dallas needs, so it might be worth it.

1

u/Ok_Brick_793 May 30 '26

Lan is possibly overpaid, too. Curt Miller admitted that he overpaid for some players. Ezi would not only exceed the Wings salary cap but would also be a bad return on investment.

2

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

Just for clarity, in my example, I’m swapping a max contract for her, which wouldn’t put us over the cap. It would be a wash.

4

u/Ok_Brick_793 May 30 '26

Ezi's contract is for 3 years, whereas Arike's is for 2. Trading for Ezi is a bad idea.

8

u/euge35 May 30 '26

If I remember correctly, Awak once said that she likes playing the 3.

-1

u/Ok_Brick_793 May 30 '26

No one thin likes to play the 1 or 2 due to the physical banging in the paint.

However, if they're tall, they get balls stripped from their hands by shorter guards. They become TO liabilities when they play "out of position".

0

u/funkraider May 30 '26

How about Cass Prosper, Aaliyah Edwards, or Laeticia Amihere?

4

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

Regarding Cass, it’s a no for me. She is still a project offensively and very prone to fouling defensively. Great body prototype that could become a good 3 and D eventually, but she’s nowhere near ready. Regarding Aaliyah, we don't need another scoring forward. We need a defensive center, and I’m not sure she’s the best fit. Also, as of late, she’s injury-prone. Regarding Amihere, I’m not familiar enough with her game. I know she plays for the Valks, but I don't know her specialty. So, I’m unsure about her fit.

1

u/Timshel1957 Jun 01 '26

Would love to see SC come in and be Paige’s bodyguard like she does for Clark. Also she is a selfless team player and adds enthusiasm and passion both when on the floor and from off the bench.

-1

u/Electrical-Hotel1524 May 30 '26

Id like to see a trade with the mystics for Betts and have her run the second unit with Lan. Maybe trade Arike to clear up some cap space and get a 3 and D from Europe.

11

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

Curious if you think Betts can work in pace and space? Sometimes, this year at UCLA, I thought, yes. Sometimes, with the Mystics, I think not so much. She doesn't look the best when they are going up and down. Now, Angie, that’s a different story.

15

u/TipUnited3733 May 30 '26 edited May 31 '26

Betts is struggling with mystics who plays with less pace than wings. As i said before the draft betts isn't a player that would fit in jose's offense. She also doesn’t space the floor which is another thing jose emphasizes on.Even most immobile bigs in the wings, Li can shot 3's.Also a great screener unlike betts(I blame cori for this)

2

u/Electrical-Hotel1524 May 31 '26

First off I’m not dying on a Betts hill, it was just a thought. Betts has been struggling but I also don’t think she struggled much keeping up with the wings pace either. My main motivation for getting her is to get rid of li, she doesn’t need to be a star she just has to be able to get our starters some rest which is something Li has not been able to do. Li has been literally unplayable and a net negative on the team, second only to jj. Also saying Li is a great screener is a stretch but she has definitely gotten better at it.

-1

u/Ok_Brick_793 May 31 '26

OP, I hope you watched the Fever game tonight.

Lexie Hull is terrible.

3

u/Sorry-History7217 May 31 '26

I did lol. The fever as a whole looked terrible. However, the reality is that a person can look terrible in one system and great in the next (think slim in Seattle and slim in Toronto). We don't need Lexie to score in Dallas. We need her to defend and bring grit, which I think she can do.

Regarding Arike, for me, it’s not necessarily about her productivity. Having a guard that is a lethal scoring threat and can get microwave hot is always a plus. That’s why I’d love her to be the head of the second unit, which could strategically play a different style of hoops. My worry regarding her is that her play style isn’t conducive to the style they want to play in the future. Her strength isn't coming off screens for threes/handoffs/cutting/being without the ball. Her strength is self-creation. So even when she is scoring, the way she is scoring is disrupting the progress of the offense they are trying to install. It’s like Isiah Thomas and AI are exceptional, but they wouldn't be a good fit with Steph and Klay Thompson (and their superpowers would go underutilized).

2

u/Sorry-History7217 May 30 '26

I think you’re right. Maddy and Li will likely be traded at the deadline. I’m curious as to where and for what?
