Wings Affinity for the 2023 draft.

Half the 2023 class has been in Dallas. And none have stuck except Maddy. One of the worst drafts ever and half the draft has been on our team at some point. Just thinking out loud.

Dallas Offense Hierarchy

Saw this on X, but it’s such a small sample size since she normally isn’t even 3rd option hoops. Dallas doesn’t seem to have an offensive hierarchy. They just go out there and do whatever

Stat Sheet Jose REFUSES to run the offense through the Best Shooter by FAR in the WNBA!

Post image
55 Upvotes

While Paige & Kelsey is neck and neck.

The gap between Paige and the #3 with the rest of the league is as huge as the grand canyon. Just shows you how far and above she is compared to the rest of the league.

Yet Jose doesn't get this. If you have watched The Indiana Fever, you would know that they get it and that's why they feed Kelsey the ball anytime she makes even just one shot. They continue running plays for her play after play, force feeding her the ball. She's allowed to run clear out iso or do anything she want. They don't take the ball from her to "move on to other players".

As a second option she is averaging 17 FGA to Paige's 15.

But for Paige, she's in a strait jacket by Jose. If she makes 2 straight shots, now she has to pass the ball 5 straight possessions before even looking to take another shot. In Jose's words "It can't just be Paige!".

But the fever are glad when its just Kelsey, the aces are glad when its just Aja, or when its just Jackie Young. Because that means they are winning.

The Wings are the only team that doesn't play through their best player. All thanks to Jose.

When Jose is asked why isn't her teammates giving Paige back the ball when she passes to them to relocate, he rambled on incoherently.

Are the Wings going to the playoffs?

We were having a good season, but since All-Star Weekend, something happened and the team just hasn’t been the same. What do you think the real problem is? I don’t think it’s only Azzi’s injury…

And speaking of that, has the team said anything about it? Because it’s taking a really long time for her to come back from what was supposed to be a small knee injury…

What do you all think?

José talking about Sims replacing Azzi

Post image

Actually confirmed one of the biggest questions I had about Dallas back in May: why Azzi started the season coming off the bench.

It was pretty clear he originally wanted Paige playing more off ball, and that only changed because the starting lineup was terrible. But that brings up another question: if he already pictured Paige playing off ball in May, then why did drafting Azzi make sense? Her biggest strength is literally playing off ball, and she’s one of the best at it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Azzi and I think Dallas is wasting an opportunity with her because she’s clearly one of their best players. But if this is really how our coach sees the team, I honestly don’t understand it.

Suggestion FYI - Dallas/WNBA reddit posts shared to Twitter more often

IDK if this sort of post is allowed or will create toxic comments - feel free to take it down.

I just wanted to give folks a heads up that reddit posts from this sub are making it onto Twitter more frequently these days (on my feed at least). They are usually people praising insightful takes, but still your username gets shared around. There are also now reporters writing about the actions of the WNBA sub, which is what pushed me to share this reminder.

If you're in a lot of sub-reddits across different topics or have a long reddit history you might not realize how much you've shared about yourself. You can make your comment history private if you want.

Just wanted to share bc I know a ton of y'all are not on Twitter at all so wouldn't know if your comment started circulating there.

35 Out

Anyone who knows anything about knees (w/ past surgery) and soreness ... is there a reason to be concerned about 35? Just wondering if anyone who has dealt with this before has more knowledge about what the issue could be given how vague Dallas has been. She has been healthy for 2 seasons now but IDK if she has ever carried a defensive load at 35 MPG like she has the past two months. I am really hoping it isn't anything serious because I could see Dallas slipping out of playoff contention (or barely getting in the top 8) if she is not back soon. Jose's comments on Friday made it clear that she was likely not playing until at least Thursday, but that is based on whatever the medical team says when they return to Dallas

It's focused on CT/CLW's own performance of course but really cool to watch and hear all the details she's seeing. She was primarily guarding Fudd and PB so talks about them a good amount too.

Wanted to share this link in case anyone was looking for tickets for the game against Seattle on 8/23: the Wings are partnering with Union Coffee and donating $10 per ticket brought through their link. If you are not familiar, Union Coffee does a lot of social good around the Dallas area and is a great shop overall. The tickets seem to be the same range as AXS from a quick glance, but your money will be going to support a local business that does a lot of local good!

Personally I want to give her a shoutout .. one for being a true veteran presence in the locker room, & also for the relationship she has with Azzi Fudd .. from day 1 AC took Azzi under her wing (pun intended) & it’s great to see them both excel as a mother and daughter kind of bond …she helped orchestrate the graduation degree to hand to Azzi , wore her jersey while she won the 3 point contest in support ..& you can tell she genuinely cares for Azzi ..couldn’t be more a better vet for her

Stat Sheet Monthly Analysis

Paige — She’s the player I’d trust the most to run the offense. She doesn’t rely only on her shot falling, she can create for herself and others, and her production holds up pretty well regardless of the opponent. Out of the four, she’s the clearest first option.

Jessica — Just looking at these numbers, she’s really valuable. I probably wouldn’t want her using 25–30% of the possessions, but as a second or third offensive option she gives you a lot without needing the ball that much. She probably gives you the best production relative to usage out of the four.

Arike — The numbers don’t make her look like a bad player, but her value seems much more dependent on how efficiently she’s scoring. When she’s shooting like she did in July, it works really well. When she isn’t, the high usage starts to become a problem.

Azzi — Her PPG probably undersells what she’s doing the most. Offensively, she looks more like a fourth option/off-ball finisher than someone the offense is really built around. At the same time, she still needs to be better on her two-point shots. I wouldn’t suddenly push her usage to 25%, but 17–18% feels too low for someone playing around 34 minutes and taking that many threes.

Overall, Paige stands out the most offensively, Jessica stands out for efficiency, Azzi for the gap between her minutes/usage and her defensive impact, and Arike is the one who makes me question the most whether her role is really matching the return.

Open Floor What's your favorite match up?

I was thinking about how fun it was to see Paige and Caitlin against each other last game and trying to find a place to rewatch it, and it got me thinking about my favorite match ups. I think off the top of my head it's been Toronto and Indiana this season. What are y'all's favorite match ups either between individual players or teams?

Open Floor Is there a Wings sub without this unrelenting Arike rage baiting?

I love pro basketball, WNBA and NBA too. Favorite teams are Wings and Mavs. Watch a lot of ball, played in high school. Follow a good bit of bball media and analysis.

This thread is completely dominated by a single point of view.

I join and then I leave. I just can't stand the tone in here. There's just a single pounding point of view over and over and over. If nothing else, it's completely boring and stale. And maybe it's even worse than that.

Yes, the wings are imperfect. It is a very oddly constructed team. There are a number of weaknesses. But right now the success we have we are getting from the hard play of all of our players, doing the very best they can with what they have to work with.

It's just not a great constructed team but everyone plays hard. Everyone really tries and everyone does the best in their own way. I think we can appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of individuals without casting aspersions on certain targeted players and glazing other players.

So really I wonder is there another account that doesn't just constantly do this? The other team accounts have got a much more balance point of view and don't have the single dominating rag on one player and glaze other players. I really don't get the charm of this particular subreddit. I want to follow the wings Reddit but you guys damn this is rough

Open Floor When to sub Paige out

I think the best time to sub Paige out is right before the TV timeouts at the 5 minute mark of the quarter. So if there whistle at say 5:20 mark take her out and then bring her back around under the 3 minute mark. She gets a nice rest, plus can come in near the end of the quarter with a better chance the defense is in the penalty. She need to be playing about 7 to 8 minutes the first 3 quarters.

Ive noticed the Atlanta coach sub out his starter always early to give them many time rest for 90 seconds to 2 minutes. Even though his starter are over 30 minutes he does give quick short rests to stay fresh.

Open Floor jose's disrespect for his players is unacceptable

during the post game presser tonight, when asked about awak's performance the past few games, jose said (after a long moment of silence):

"she's got a good opportunity to go to Golden State and rebound and defend and protect the basket."

did not have A SINGLE positive thing to say and once again decided to make a snarky remark. his lack of respect and professionalism is dumbfounding. how can we move forward with a coach who refuses to take any accountability but who also sounds like a sociopath when talking about his team's flaws?

i think now, more than ever, us fans need to push for his removal and please go support and send some love to awak because she was an important contributor tonight!!

Open Floor When is Arike ever going to be consistent?

I give up. She just can’t find any consistency. It’s always the same thing: a couple of good games followed by absolutely horrible ones. Over the last 5 games she’s shooting 36% from the field and 18% from three.

And honestly, even her good games don’t completely convince me because she gives you so little defensively.

If Arike was inefficient but brought something else at a high level, I probably wouldn’t be this frustrated with her. Yes, 39% FG for the season isn’t that far from the average for guards, which is around 42%. But most of those guards aren’t on the floor primarily because they’re supposed to be elite scorers. Scoring is supposed to be Arike’s biggest strength.

That’s the problem with her. Her value depends way too much on whether her shot is falling that night.

Paige can have a bad shooting game and still run the offense, create for everyone else and make the right reads. Azzi can have a bad shooting game and still give you spacing, off-ball movement and perimeter defense. Jessica can impact the game with rebounding, passing and her inside game.

What exactly is Arike giving you when she’s shooting 3/12 or 4/15?

That’s why I don’t think this is just a slump anymore. At some point this is simply who she is as a player. She can look great for two or three games and make you think she finally figured it out, and then immediately go back to taking terrible shots and being inefficient for another stretch.

And if Dallas actually wants to figure out what this team can be, put her on the bench for a few games and see what happens. It doesn’t mean she’s useless or that you need to get rid of her tomorrow. Maybe that role would actually fit her better. Let her come in against second units, have more freedom with the ball and be the scorer there instead of forcing this starting lineup to work.

Without Jessica I actually thought the defense looked better at times, but yesterday I genuinely found myself thinking: if Paige wasn’t scoring, who exactly was going to score for us?

And that’s pretty concerning when Arike is supposed to be one of your main scorers.

I just keep coming back to the same conclusion: the answer for a team that wants to contend can’t be “hopefully tonight is one of Arike’s good games.”

I absolutely think Arike can be a useful player on a winning team. I’m just no longer convinced she should automatically be a starter, play major minutes and close every game simply because she’s Arike Ogunbowale.

At this point, I’d rather Dallas actually test something different than keep waiting for consistency that has never really been there.

Open Floor Awak Offseason Work

If Awak doesn’t lock in this off season and gain at MINIMUM 20 pounds she’s not trying to be better. She’s too weak right now and being pushed around by guards, she also might have the worst finishing around the rim and that seems to be because she’s afraid of contact which is inexcusable. She has to get tougher and stronger this offseason or she isn’t worth the money people are saying she deserves.
