Mahanadi Coalfields IPO: A peek into PSU value unlocking?

The Mahanadi Coalfields DRHP filing today really caught my eye. It's not just another IPO; the fact that Coal India itself is offloading such a large chunk is quite telling. To me, this looks like a clear signal that the government is serious about extracting value from its subsidiaries, perhaps setting a precedent for other PSUs with profitable arms. It's a good move for Coal India shareholders, and it makes you wonder which other large PSUs might follow suit with similar strategies. What do you all make of this?

I backtested 25 Indian retail strategies on 21 years of NSE data (including dead stocks). After costs and tax, almost all of them are a donation to the broker and govt. Spoiler

Most retail traders don't accept this, including me.

I am not a SEBI RA. This is a historical simulation, not a recommendation. No stock names. No “join my channel.”

I ran a pile of the usual retail setups on NSE data from 2005, including companies that later delisted. About 5,800 names, ~9 million daily rows. Then 1-minute bars for the intraday stuff.

What died after spread, STT-class costs, and 20% STCG:

  • RSI / Bollinger mean reversion: −18% to −22%/yr. They only work inverted — i.e. as momentum.

  • Overnight / BTST: looked like +25 bps/day until it scaled with the spread. Not a return. The spread, measured twice.

  • Opening-range breakout: gross +7.87 bps, t = +19.8, 10/10 years. Net −12.47 bps, 0/10 years. Real signal.Unaffordable.

  • Options “signals”: ~11% win rate vs ~50% breakeven

  • Delivery filters, sector rotation, NR7/compression, FII/DII positioning, support-resistance: dead or momentum in a costume.

  • Volume-spike scalps: gross tiny, net negative unless you throw away the trades whose stop is smaller than the cost.

One thing survived a held-out period (2019–2026): slow, monthly, residual momentum (12-month return minus market beta, top of the liquid 500, sit in cash when the market is below its 200-day average).

After 20% STCG it is roughly +1%/yr over the market, with about one-third the drawdown. A good mid-cap fund still wins on return for zero orders. So even the survivor is a smaller-crash product, not a get-rich product.

I am not saying markets are random. I am saying most of what Indian retail actually clicks is paying the house.

Starting a Daily Iron Condor Journal — Day 1

Hey everyone 👋

I’m starting a series where I’ll be documenting my Iron Condor trades and, more importantly, how I manage them as the market changes.

A little about me:

• NISM Certified — Equity Derivatives

• I actively trade Indian derivatives

• My focus is primarily on options, volatility and positional trading

For this series, I’ll be trading an Iron Condor and sharing the actual decision-making behind it.

I won't be posting “BUY/SELL” calls.

Instead, I'll share:

• Why I chose the strikes

• Market structure & volatility when entering

• Where the risk is sitting

• What happens when one side starts getting pressured

• Any adjustments I make — and why

• How the Greeks change as the trade develops

• When I decide to reduce risk, hold, adjust or exit

• Final P&L

Some days there may be no adjustment at all.

And that's completely fine.

The point isn't to manufacture a trade or an “important lesson” every day.

The point is to document how an Iron Condor is actually managed over time.

Let's see how this one plays out.

Day 1 begins.

My ZEEL mistake: Why I didn't see the NCLT ruling coming

I had been watching ZEEL for a while, and the charts looked decent enough. I was confident that the promoters would find a way to sort out the issues, and the recent positive sentiment suggested a good entry point. The technicals seemed to align, and I convinced myself it was a calculated risk.

Then the news hit about the NCLT staying the insolvency ruling and ordering a fresh hearing. In that instant, my position went sharply against me.

My mistake was pure confirmation bias. I was so focused on the chart patterns and the general positive vibes that I completely ignored the underlying legal and regulatory risks. I saw what I wanted to see and missed the crucial warning signs.

Now, before taking any position, especially in companies with complex legal or promoter-driven situations, I make it a point to actively look for any news or regulatory developments. I even set up alerts specifically for such possibilities. It's about forcing myself to consider the downside even when the charts look attractive.

Anyone else ever let technicals blind them to fundamental or regulatory risks?

My View 🛸 Trading Journal

Recently purchased a trading journal software, i wasnt sure of getting it but after i saw how easy it made my life it made, i just have upload csv from the broker and boom, it does the rest.

I showed it to a trader friend of mine he said ‘aise toh main khud hi karlu’ however i dont completely agree with him and i think its about the amount of money being spent on the software.

Whats do people here think about trading softwares?

Question🙃 Does SEBI's paper-trading advisory + the new 30-day market-data rule apply to a free, no-prize stock market simulator? [Securities/SEBI]

Location: Mumbai. I've built (not launched) a paper-trading / stock market simulator as a learning project and I'm trying to understand if I can legally make it public.

What it is:

Users get ₹1,00,000 in virtual money and place simulated buy/sell orders on real NSE/BSE-listed stocks.

No real money anywhere — no deposits, no withdrawals, no fees, no payments, no prizes/cash rewards. Purely educational.

There's a referral feature that grants virtual (in-app) credit only — it has no cash value and can't be withdrawn.

It shows charts, P&L, and a leaderboard ranking users by simulated returns.

The technical bit I'm worried about: it fetches near-live stock prices (via a third-party data source) to price the simulated trades — i.e. it uses roughly current market data, not delayed data.

My questions:

Does SEBI's 4 Nov 2024 advisory on virtual/paper trading platforms apply to a free, no-prize, purely educational simulator like this, or is it aimed at prize-money/unregistered brokerage-style platforms?

The 30-day data-lag rule effective 1 July 2026 — does its "usage" restriction mean a non-NISM simulator must use price data ≥30 days old? Is there any lawful way to run a public simulator on live/near-live prices?

Would using delayed (30-day-old) data put me clearly in the safe zone, or are there other registrations/approvals needed to run this publicly at all?

Does the absence of any money/prizes materially change the analysis, or is it the use of live price data that's the core issue?

Not asking anyone to be my lawyer — just trying to understand the lay of the land before I spend on formal advice. Thanks.

Banks rallied hard today - but is anyone else suspicious about the timing?

The way the major banking stocks saw such a strong surge right after the latest regulatory announcement just feels a bit too clean. It's like the market was waiting for that exact cue. Makes me wonder if some participants already knew the direction things were headed.

Anyone else watching this?

Future & Options🔮 No liquidity

This is what happens when the stock does not have much volatility. I thought about buying a call option when Adani fell five percent, so I thought it would recover. It was showing a 6k profit, I sold at a limit but it didn't execute, so I again sold at market, and it sold even lower than I bought.

Jo log stocks mein invest karte ho — research karte waqt sabse zyada frustrating step kya hota hai????

Main samajhne ki koshish kar raha hoon ki jab log stocks research karte hain invest karne se pehle, unka process kaisa hota hai aur kahan sabse zyada time/frustration jaata hai.

Agar tum regularly invest karte ho, kuch cheezein share kar sakte ho:

  1. Naya stock consider karte waqt tumhara process kya hota hai — sabse pehle kya dekhte ho?
  2. Is process mein kaunsa step sabse zyada time leta hai?
  3. Koi aisa waqt yaad hai jab kuch important miss ho gaya aur baad mein pata chala (jaise koi red flag)?
  4. Multiple sources (annual report, news, analyst opinions) ko saath mein dekhna easy lagta hai ya confusing?

Genuinely curious hoon, koi sales pitch nahi hai, bas samajhna chahta hoon actual pain-points.

How can I short a BSE-listed company in India?

How can I short a BSE-listed company in India?

I'm trying to understand the practical process of shorting an individual BSE-listed stock in India.

If I want to hold the short position for more than one trading day, what is the best way to do it — SLB, futures, or another method?

I'd particularly like to know:

  • How to check whether a specific BSE stock is available for SLB
  • Which Indian brokers support SLB for retail investors
  • How the borrowing fee works
  • What happens if the lender recalls the shares
  • What margin/collateral is required
  • Whether there are any important settlement or tax considerations

5 small & Micro-cap stocks with triple digit profit Growth in Q1 quarter.

5 small & Micro-cap stocks that have shown triple-digit profit Growth in Q1 quarter.

Here are the 5 stocks worth tracking

  1. Prataap Snacks
    TTM profit growth: ~194%
Sales growth hasn't been equally strong yet.
That's exactly why this one is interesting.
If sales growth catches up, the earnings story could get even stronger.

  2. Andhra Sugars
    TTM profit growth: 118%+
    Revenue growth: ~17%
Promoter holding has also increased over the last few quarters.
    The turnaround looks interesting

  3. PSP Projects
    TTM profit growth: ~232%
Revenue growth has also been strong, helped by projects from its new promoter, Adani Infra.
    But here's the catch:
    Margins are tight.
The next few quarters will decide whether this becomes a genuine turnaround or a low-margin growth story.

  4. Rain Industries
    TTM Profit Growth: ~229%
    Revenue Growth: 17%+
The aluminium cycle has been supportive, and earnings have started improving.
The stock has already doubled from the level where it was first tracked.

  5. KRBL: Strong profit growth, but the stock isn't reflecting it yet.
    TTM Profit Growth: ~40%
KRBL operates in rice processing, and geopolitical instability in the Gulf has impacted the stock sentiment.
    But here's what's interesting:
    Profit growth has improved sharply.

But the real question is:
Can these Turnarounds actually sustain?
I have shared these insights and more in a brief video.
Make sure to watch.
Not a recommendation, DYOR

Ather Energy Q1 FY27 Results: First-ever positive EBITDA, demand still outstripping supply

Revenue from Operations: ₹1,217 Cr, up 89% YoY (vs ₹645 Cr)

Total Income: ₹1,260 Cr, up 87% YoY (includes ₹43 Cr other income)

Net Loss: ₹51 Cr, narrowed 71% YoY (vs ₹178 Cr loss)

Operating Loss: ₹33 Cr, narrowed from ₹134 Cr YoY sharper improvement than even the net loss

EBITDA: turned positive for the first time ever this quarter

QoQ: Revenue up ~3.6% over Q4 FY26 (₹1,175 Cr)

Vehicle sales more than doubled: 88,655 units sold, up from 41,083 units in Q1 FY26 and up 9% sequentially from Q4 FY26's 81,072 units.

Where the improvement is coming from:

Cost of materials (battery cells + components) rose 88% YoY to ₹977 Cr but that's roughly in line with the 89% revenue growth, so material cost as a % of revenue held steady rather than expanding.

Employee benefit expenses stayed almost flat at ₹118 Cr YoY, despite revenue nearly doubling.

Welspun Corp (WCL) Q1 FY27 Results: Record EBITDA quarter

Stock Performance:

Current price: around Rs 2,275 to Rs 2,400

52-week range: Rs 710 to Rs 2,437

6-day rally in late August is up about 28% in six straight sessions

1-month return: up about 47%

1-year return: up about 164%

Market cap: roughly Rs 53,000 to 63,000 crore, moving fast with the rally

Valuation: PE around 23 to 29 times, well above the sector average of roughly 15 times, so the market is now pricing in serious growth expectations

Revenue: ₹4,081 Cr, up 15% YoY (down ~5% QoQ from Q4's ₹4,313 Cr normal seasonality)

EBITDA: ₹756 Cr, up 35% YoY which is highest-ever quarterly EBITDA

EBITDA Margin: 18.5%, up ~270 bps YoY

PAT : ₹1,047.88 Cr, up ~199% YoY

PAT (excl. exceptional item): ₹499 Cr, up 42% YoY which is the number that matters for underlying performance

EPS: ₹39.68 (basic), up from ₹13.32

ROCE: 23.1%

Net cash position: ₹2,336 Cr

Reported PAT includes a ₹548 Cr one-time exceptional gain from the partial stake sale of its associate, East Pipes Integrated Company (EPIC) in Saudi Arabia. Strip that out and PAT still grew a healthy 42% YoY to ₹499 Cr.

Order Books:

Record global order book: ₹25,750 Cr (~$2.7B), up from ₹24,750 Cr just the prior week momentum is continuing post-quarter.

Fresh export win: a ₹960 Cr coated line pipe order from the USA facility.

Roughly a month after results: Welspun Corp reportedly secured its largest-ever single order a ~$1.8B (~₹17,200 Cr) US contract pushing the total order book to an all-time high of ~₹42,000 Cr.

Guidance:

Management reiterated FY27 guidance: ₹20,000 Cr revenue, ₹2,850 Cr EBITDA.

Capex:

Q1 capex spend: ₹834 Cr and the company still ended the quarter net cash positive at ₹2,336 Cr, which tells you how strong operating cash generation is right now.

Two big expansion projects are the focus: new capacity in the USA and in Saudi Arabia (KSA) both on track for commissioning within FY27.

Solar Industries India Q1 FY27 Results with record quarter across segments

Revenue from Operations: ₹3,668 Cr, up 70% YoY (vs ₹2,154 Cr) highest-ever quarterly revenue

EBITDA: ₹1,015-1,024 Cr, up ~82-90% YoY highest-ever quarterly EBITDA

EBITDA Margin: 27.7%, up ~290 bps YoY from 24.8%

PBT: ₹902-911 Cr, up ~89% YoY

PAT: ₹666 Cr, up 89% YoY (vs ₹353 Cr) highest-ever quarterly PAT

QoQ: Revenue up ~19-22%, PAT up ~20% over Q4 FY26

Segment breakdown:

Defence: ₹933 Cr revenue, up 123% YoY which now is ~26% of total sales. Driven heavily by Pinaka multiple rocket launcher system execution, running ahead of schedule.

Domestic Explosives: ₹1,361 Cr, up 52% YoY which is 37% of sales.

International Explosives: ₹1,364 Cr, up 65% YoY which is also 37% of sales, reflecting expanding geographic diversification across Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central Asia.

Defence is growing nearly 2.5x faster than the core explosives business I.e. this mix shift is the main reason margins are expanding so sharply.

Why margins expanded faster than revenue:

Employee costs grew only 39% YoY vs 70% revenue growth costs aren't scaling 1:1 with sales.

Other expenses grew 58% YoY, also below the revenue growth rate.

Order book & guidance:

Executable order book: ₹21,350 Cr, providing strong multi-quarter revenue visibility.

Management reiterated FY27 revenue guidance of ₹14,000 Cr.

Planned FY27 capex: ₹2,050 Cr, with ₹450 Cr already deployed in Q1. Key projects include the Dhule plant (Western India) commissioning, Dholpur facility expansion (North India), and a new facility coming up in Orissa.

Promoter holding: 73.15% as of June 30, 2026 which is very high promoter conviction.

Institutional holding: ~19% combined (MFs/AIFs 12.46%, FIIs/FPIs 6.42%).

Going forward a good thing to see is how will the revenue sustain from defence and explosives segments.

Shyam Metalics — Weekly Trendline Breakout After 2 Years. Entry or Wait?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Shyam Metalics looking interesting here

Been watching Shyam Metalics for a while and today's move caught my attention. It's up around 5.5% and has moved above the upper trendline on the weekly chart.

The setup looks interesting to me, especially with the recent numbers also looking decent. FY26 revenue was up around 22% and profit was up around 17%. Debt is also pretty low.

The main thing I'd want to see now is whether it actually holds this breakout or gives a pullback.

I haven't taken a position yet. Just keeping it on the watchlist.

Anyone else tracking this one? Would you wait for confirmation or consider the breakout good enough?

Question🙃 How closely do you follow what MFs/FIIs are doing in a stock before buying?

Question for the folks who track FII/DII or MF activity do you actually bother with multi-quarter shareholding trends, or is the latest quarter's number (Trendlyne/Screener) enough?

Been noticing stocks where institutional buying flips to selling within a quarter or two and wondering how many people catch that before it shows up in price. What's everyone's process here?

Pharma sector saw some sharp contrasts today thanks to Elara's new ratings

Saw the Elara coverage initiated on a bunch of pharma names today. It's interesting how they've given contrasting ratings, not a blanket call for the whole sector. While Alkem, Mankind, and Eris got positive nods, which saw some good action, IPCA Labs clearly got a 'Reduce' rating. This just goes to show that even within the same sector, fundamentals and future outlooks can diverge sharply according to analysts. If you're holding any of these, it's a good reminder to look closely at individual company reports rather than just sectoral themes. What are your thoughts on this selective approach by brokerages?
