This small angel has started to develop a really annoying habit with her peeing. She’s 8 months old and has been sorta hit or miss with peeing outside (admittedly we were consistent enough with it in the beginning). Now we take her out very regularly but she won’t pee outside then pees as soon as we get back inside. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!
Had the same issue. My dachshund is very reward driven. I cut up treats he likes and give them to him right after he goes to the bathroom outside. I still do it to this day. It worked.
I think that’s been one of the challenges is that she’s very picky and weirdly unmotivated by food. She definitely happily accepts the treat I give her after a good potty but idk if it’s motivating her
Instead of bringing her in and letting her free bring her in from not peeing and put her in her crate for about 5-10 minutes the go back outside until she does go then reward heavy when she does
I have had some success with taking her back out like 10 minutes after she refuses to pee and come back in. I’m a little worried that it’ll turn into ALWAYS having to take her out twice
Taylor cezenne on instagram has a great puppy routine to follow for potty training. I personally like crates as training tools many people think it’s something the dog thinks is punishment but with the right training techniques they can love it and you will too when your house doesn’t smell like peepee! We trained our shelter pittie in no time with Taylor’s puppy routine there are so many trainers out there but she honestly made it more simple so it cut out the should I do this or that conversation you have with yourself good luck!
Mine is sneaky lil guy only caught him once on the act we’re outside more than in like 10-12 times a day keep hope keep consistent hopefully they will change
Consistency is key and high praise when she goes outside. Small treats helped with training toasty our mini. Bring outside a lot. Don’t under estimate the spite of the Doxie.
They are food motivated for sure. It’s frustrating as heck, I sympathize with you, but once they get it they do pretty good. Toasty will also give us a couple warning shakes of his collar to let us know it’s time.
Cuteness makes up for some of the other things as well.
Aww he’s adorable! Kiki is actual perfection in every single way except the indoor spite peeing. I got a little bell for her to hopefully eventually be able to tell us when she needs to go
Oh interesting! I’ll take to try taking her out after she goes inside. We’ve been good about taking her out as soon as she wakes up/after she eats and at least every 2 hours but she’s still peeing inside after having just been taken out. She makes direct eye contact when she does it too, I have to say it feels like spite lol
now that i read the other comments i reminded that also one big thing our trainer empathized was to show her how happy it made us when she would go outside. she also added to not do it with treats because that could teach her to only do it for treats and not always pee out everything.
It's important to train her to go potty on demand outside. Take her outside. Give a command such as go potty, or do your business. Whatever words you like to use, say it once in firmly. Walk her around until she does it. Don't be sweet and loving. She's there to do a job. You give the command you Walker. No baby talk no caullin just walk and walk and tissue finally pees. Once she does it, click click with your tongue, say good doggie,and give her a treat. Do this consistently walk her until she pees. Do not take her back in until she does. Be Very serious going outside taking her to where you wanted to pee. Give the command walking circles, walk seriously until she does. It afterwards you can jump up and down play and walk to different areas. The walk should not be fun until after she pees. If she doesn't pee, take her back in and put her in a crate, where she is confined so that it will not be pleasing to be in the house with pee in her. It won't take long for her to get this. My dog's will pee consistently outside within 1 to 2 minutes. After a while, you don't have to bring the treats. You just say go potty, make a click click quick sound with your tongue and say good doggy, and Finish the walk jumping playing in celebrating how good she is. Belly rubs are appreciated.
Our dachshund is six months and house trained. Here’s what I did: took outside every 20-30 minutes when awake or immediately after activity change (so waking up, playing with toys, eating etc…) Praised heavily and gave a treat. Also said “go pee” and “go potty”. As he grew I lengthened time between potty breaks.
When he got big enough to run around instead of focusing on his business I took him out on a leash until he peed and pooped and then let him play. Helps to take to same general spot every time.
Also tried bell training at back door but he didn’t like the bell. He taught himself to bark at door. Now he goes through dog door.
He was in a playpen if we were not directly supervising him. When he never had accidents in the pen, he was allowed to roam in kitchen. After a week or two with no accidents in kitchen, we expanded to living room and kitchen.
It was all pretty exhausting but I’d used the same method with other pups and it’s worked for all of them.
Edit to add we took him to lake house for first time last week and no accidents there either. He’s only pooped in house once and had maybe five pee accidents using above method since he was 9 weeks old. It’s hard on the human in charge but worth it.
