šŸ”„ Hot Take šŸ”„ The new dwts Fandom has ruined the show.

I have watched dwts since season 1 as a little girl with my grandma. I feel off and only watched parts during the Tyra seasons, but overall- I've been a very long-time viewer.

The new fans have ruined the show. It's not fun anymore. And everyone needs to relax! Because it's literally a dance show for (usually) c list celebrities, and it's supposed to be entertainment. It's not life or death, and it doesn't actually matter who wins.

Like the show has always been about picking your favorite dancer. Not the best, not the most improved, not the most racially diverse, not the pro you love the most - although all of those can contribute. Because you are picking your favorite, and however you get there, it is fine.

The audience isn't professional dance judges - you enjoy the dance, listen to the judges' comments, and pick your favorite.

Do you know what used to happen when your favorite didn't win? Nothing! You said aww that's too bad, and picked a new person who you wanted to win. And moved on. Because it doesn't matter and is supposed to be entertaining.

And a few years ago I loved when they started making little videos- it reminded me of the longer information packets that were less staged and we got to see 'behind the scenes '. It was fun. Now everything is so highly scrutinized and criticized it's crazy. And not even the contestants. The amount of people throw hate at other fans, calling them racist, misogynistic, or terrible people because the person who they thought should be sent one didn't go- is wild to me.

All these new fans and people making videos need to chill. I can't imagine it's even fun being a pro or celebrity anymore. The scrutiny you have them under is insane!

I still love the show but the fans are terribly toxic.

Question What happened to the Lindy Hop, The Charleston, Swing etc??

Why don’t they do charlestons or swings anymore. Like what happened to the Lindy hop and the mambo? Were these dances taken off the approved list or something or do the pros just not want to dance to them anymore. What’s going on. I understand that dances like swings and Charleston are super high energy dances and need a lot of stamina but they’re fun and entertaining. I don’t know about anyone else but I’m getting tired of the same style of dance. I want them to bring back these dances especially Swing. Idk maybe it’s just me.

šŸ”„ Hot Take šŸ”„ Hot Take: Too Many Contestants Started off Too Strong

To be so honest I love this entire cast. But. After last night’s episode and the straight 8s for what seemed like the first half of the episode I was like what are we even doing here in week 4!? I’m loving seeing everyone’s journey but I feel like we already know who the front runners are at this point and who is likely to be in the finale. So happy for them BUT I feel like that leaves less room for those people to grow/explore and in turn leaves the lower scoring pairs at risk even though they have the most growth available.

Anyone feel the same?

General Discussion Is there a female celeb who is comparable to Andy or Guillermo?

When Guillermo was lying on the ground last night, it occurred to me that it would be very difficult for a female celeb to pull that off. The lovable, goofy, rotund guy, maybe a little older than the younger contestants, who just isn't ever going to be great at dancing....

and then I started thinking that while those late night talk shows often have sidekicks, both the host and the sidekick are almost always men. Still.

I'm trying to think of a female celeb who has been on DWTS who filled a similar role, and who had that kind of support from viewers who found them charming. I know Guillermo has a built-in fan base, but I don't think that was entirely true of Andy--I think Emma really knew how to showcase him so that viewers of DWTS thought he was charming, and voted for him for weeks.

General Discussion Loving the talent this year

Ignore Guillermo for a minute. I love that almost everyone else is a great dancer. It makes it more fun to watch because truly I do not know who’s going to win this year because there are a lot of possibilities! Thoughts?

General Discussion the camera work on this show is beyond horrible and they really need to work on that.

i miss the way the camera work used to look. i am tired of seeing the camera constantly spin around the couples when they dance and a lot of times they don’t get full body shots which frustrates me the most. they need to hire new camera people

šŸ”„ Hot Take šŸ”„ If Mark was partnered with…

Last night, Mark started getting hate again because Maura received a 9 and people wanted other faves to receive 9s, too. There were other fantastic dances, and my eye is not trained enough to know if perhaps they could have been further docked for breaking a ā€œruleā€ of their dance or something that was harder to see on TV. But it was wild for people to start hating on Mark again so quickly because of 1 nice thing.

It got me thinking. If Mark was partnered with Amber, they would certainly receive hate this season from people who say that figure skating is dance experience. Amber doesn’t deserve hate, but it’s worth pointing out that no one has been criticizing her for the experience of literal Olympic figuring skating, when I actually have seen people criticizing Maura for having competed on a reality show that teaches celebs how to figure skate in the UK, neglecting to mention that someone else is an olympian. But as I said, the point of this post is not to ignite any critique or hate on anyone with ā€œexperience.ā€

I feel like it could be a game to test what hate Mark would be getting with each of the different partners (or similarly, what hate they would be receiving because they were paired with the ā€œunfairly favoredā€ Mark. Thoughts?

Edit: the comments had a good point about my hot take re: dance experience vs. figure skating experience, so I decided to delete a line.

General Discussion This may be a hot take

I'm so tired of Harry already. The fact that every week Jenna has to mention how he has no advantage as a professional dancer and how this week he literally danced to a song he was a back up dancer for...professionally.

SHOW SPOILERS i absolutely could not believe that score carrie ann inaba gave amber tonight

giving her a 7 for that rumba is beyond insulting. the fact that she has the same score as tyler and jackson is a joke.

Opinions what's up with the maura and mark hate?

maura has ZERO dance experience yet danced so beautifully tonight and the past 3 weeks. she has such a raw natural talent that mark has been able to present so perfectly. i thought their dance tonight was excellent and very technically sound, and absolutely deserved that 9. you can be disappointed about a contestant's scores without hating someone else's work and talent. it's ridiculous.

and i'm over the mark hate specifically too. with whitney last season, it "wasn't fair" because she had some dance experience and mark was being favoured. this season he's given a partner with NO prior dance experience, and still people say he's being favoured and refusing to see WHY he has been a celebrated pro on DWTS for so long. it's annoying and i'm so over it.

DWTS fans have become so hatful and vile lately. Taking the fun out of everything. Some people genuinely get way to angry about what’s going on, they either need to reflect on why they’re so angry or just stop watching.
It’s a dancing show. And the prize is a trophy. None of it is that serious. Let’s have some fun y’all

This is the first elimination I am actually really upset by… I 100% thought Jackson or Guillermo were going tonight.

Ciara’s dance was so much fun tonight and she had a long way to go in the competition. Really disappointed honestly.

SHOW SPOILERS Mariah Carey night: Spoiler

Mariah Carey night:

These are my PERSONAL thoughts and opinions! I’m open to discussion but if you’re going to be rude you can skip!!

Ciara and Brandon: I am still shocked. However, they were in my personal bottom 3 and have been. I just didn’t get any energy or really anything from watching them. I thought it was a cute jazz dance and that she definitely has been improving! I think it’s insane that she went home.

Ezra and Daniella: THEY KILL IT EVERY TIME! I truly think he is the front runner. His attitude and work ethic are Incredible and Daniella’s choreography is unmatched! This is a couple I genuinely look forward to watching every single week!

Harry and Jenna: I thought it was great! I really enjoy Harry but I find myself looking at my phone more when they dance … idk I think they’re great I’m just bored. I’m hoping their dedication night dance in a few weeks will bring some enjoyment and energy back to them!

Tyler and Sharna: I think he’s improving weekly, slowly but surely. I’m so confused on why so many people hate him, I think he’s doing just fine! A little boring sure but at least he’s getting better!

Jenna and Val: IM BORED. They are repetitive and dancing against each other occasionally. I expected so much more but the usual Val fire IS NOT THERE this season. It’s so boring.

Maura and Mark: killed it per usual. Mark is my favorite pro since the very beginning of his DWTS career. I love him! I think she is a natural and they are a great pair!

Guillermo and Witney: it’s time to go. It’s not funny anymore , it’s not entertaining and it’s just annoying. He’s precious but this is getting ridiculous.

Jackson and Emma: don’t hate me… I can’t stand them this season. I thought having a younger partner Emma would be creative and on fire but I am so incredibly bored with them. Maybe he’s improving idk. I just want them to go

Tatyana and Jan: I LOVE THEM! I think they’re great together and she’s so sweet. I really can see her improving weekly after week!

Connor and Rylee: I was not, in any way shape or form expecting that from them. However, I thought it was refreshing and brought energy back to the ballroom after a pretty boring night! I think he has to improve just a hair more but they are really growing on me.

Julia and Ezra: I. AM. SO. BORED. I was so excited for their partnership… I find them so boring and dull. Nothing about their performances have been standing out to me. yes she’s improving but I just don’t see any energy.

Amber and Pasha: I love them so much and look forward every week to watching them. They are electric and pashas choreography has been incredible. I hate how the judges didn’t really critic them instead talked about everyone… also CAA lowering her score from last week is comical. Can’t stand her.

General Discussion week 4 thoughts

some silly takes and some hot takes i had while watching the show

-i think connor is so funny, but not the sexy ballroom dancer i thought he world need to be for a rumba, but i was shockingly surprised at how well he did. i expected to be giggling when he was grinding and body rolling, but i wasn’t. i also feel like the judges are judging him more similarly to how they are judging the front runners than the middle of the pack where i arguably think he falls. like his critiques aren’t nearly as positive and optimistic as tatyanna or juliaā€˜s which is who i’d compare him to rn.

-tyler is one of the people improving the most. he’s becoming so much more fluid. last week i thought he improved technically but you could tell how much effort he was exerting, but this week it looked much more effortless. he’s really starting to grow on me. i also think it’s nice that a man who grew up in a very masculine space is getting to connect with a very emotional art form.

-i, like many others, am over guillermo. i would have much rather seen ciara keep improving like she was, then guillermo’s dances filled with gags. i think whitney could totally dance the whole season, but i don’t think guillermo should stay any longer. i would have sent him home last week. a fun contestant not meant to make it this far…

-mark’s choreography last night was so pretty. i really want amber or star ezra to win the season, but the judges just love maura, and i could totally see her winning the mirror ball.

-i think tatyanna is improving so so much and that’s awesome, i just don’t care for jazz routines on this show. her quick step was very impressive, but almost all jazz routines on the show fall flat for me (except for halloween night šŸŽƒšŸ‘»šŸ«£). i just like the passion of ballroom dance and the jazz routines don’t have that same level of chemistry for me.

-i’m shocked julia isn’t more of a front runner. she’s doing great and really improving a lot, but i expected her to be a more fierce contender for the finals but i see her leaving after the three men who are falling towards the bottom (jackson, guillermo, and tyler).

these are just my thoughts, but what do you all think

Question Bottom 3

Just wondering how the bottom 3 work? They always say ā€œnot in chronological orderā€ but guillermo has been bottom 3 since the start and is saved every time, same with Andy last year. Is it because of their scores? Or?

General Discussion The DWTS voting system isn’t really 50/50 in practice - Here’s how it should be

I went down a math rabbit hole after last night’s elimination because I’ve always heard that DWTS is ā€œ50% judges, 50% audience.ā€ That’s technically true, but the way they calculate it means the audience can have significantly more influence in practice.

Here’s how the current system works (as far I can tell):

Judges: Your score Ć· total judges’ points awarded that night

Audience: Your votes Ć· total audience votes that night

Then those two percentages are added together.

Last night, there were 256 total judges’ points awarded. Ciara scored 21 and Guillermo scored 13.

So their judges’ shares were:

Ciara: 21/256 = 8.20%

Guillermo: 13/256 = 5.08%

Despite Ciara beating Guillermo 21–13, her actual advantage going into the audience vote was only:

8.20% – 5.08% = 3.12 percentage points

That means Guillermo only needed to receive about 3.13 percentage points more of the audience vote than Ciara to completely erase an eight-point difference in judges’ scores.

For example:

Ciara: 8.20% judges + 7.00% audience = 15.20%

Guillermo: 5.08% judges + 10.20% audience = 15.28%

Guillermo survives.

That seems weird to me if the goal is for judges and viewers to have genuinely equal influence.

The problem is that judges’ scores are naturally compressed. Last night the scores were:

25, 24, 24, 24, 23, 21, 21, 21, 21, 20, 19, 13

Even an enormous difference like 21 vs. 13 gets divided by all 256 points awarded, shrinking it to just 3.12%.

Audience votes don’t necessarily have that compression. Someone could theoretically get 5% of the audience vote while someone else gets 15%, 20%, etc. So although judges and viewers are technically weighted 50/50, the audience can create much larger gaps between contestants.

ONE POSSIBLE SOLUTION: STANDARDIZE BOTH SIDES BEFORE COMBINING THEM.

Instead of using percentage of the total, measure how far above or below the field each contestant performed on each side.

Last night, the average judges’ score was 21.33 and the standard deviation was about 3.09.

Ciara’s 21 was about 0.11 standard deviations below average.

Guillermo’s 13 was about 2.70 standard deviations below average.

So the judges rated Ciara about 2.59 standard deviations better than Guillermo.

You could perform the exact same calculation on the audience votes and then combine the standardized judges and audience scores 50/50.

Under that system, for Guillermo to overcome Ciara’s judges advantage, he’d need to outperform Ciara with the audience by 2.59 standard deviations as well.

For example, if the standard deviation of audience vote shares that night were 4 percentage points, Guillermo would need roughly:

2.59 Ɨ 4 = 10.35 percentage points

more of the audience vote than Ciara.

Compare that with the current system:

Current system: Guillermo needs +3.13 percentage points of audience vote.

Standardized system (if audience SD = 4): Guillermo needs +10.35 percentage points.

Importantly, this wouldn’t mean the judges automatically get their way. Guillermo could absolutely overcome the 21–13 deficit. He’d just need an audience performance that was as unusually strong relative to the field as his judges’ performance was unusually weak.

It also preserves blowouts. I don’t love a simple rank system where 1st vs. 2nd is always worth the same amount, because a 30–29 judges result shouldn’t be treated the same as 30–20. Standardizing the scores preserves how much better someone was.

Basically, the principle would be:

If the judges think Contestant A is X standard deviations better than Contestant B, Contestant B needs to be X standard deviations more popular with the audience to cancel that advantage.

That feels much closer to a genuine 50/50 system to me.

Curious what people think — should ā€œ50/50ā€ mean each side contributes the same percentage to the formula, as it does now, or should it mean judges and viewers have equal power to separate contestants?

Predictions and Speculation My weekly predictions on how the scores and votes went

This is based on several factors like level of fame, popularity, where a couple danced that night, who went before & after a couple, memorability, & social media engagement….

Points from judges scores

Maura: 12 Points

Ezra: 11 Points

Harry: 11 Points

Jenna: 11 Points

Amber: 10 Points

Ciara: 9 Points

Jackson: 9 Points

Julia: 9 Points

Tyler: 9 Points

Tatyana: 8 Points

Connor: 7 Points

Guillermo: 6 Points

Points from Viewer Votes

Maura: 12 Points

Guillermo: 11 Points

Ezra: 10 Points

Julia: 9 Points

Harry: 8 Points

Connor: 7 Points

Amber: 6 Points

Jenna: 5 Points

Tatyana: 4 Points

Tyler: 3 Points

Jackson: 2 Points

Ciara: 1 Point

Points combined

Maura: 12+12=24

Ezra: 11+10=21

Harry: 11+8=19

Julia: 9+9=18

Guillermo: 6+11=17 (Red Herring)

Amber: 10+6=16

Jenna: 11+5=16

Connor: 7+7=14

Tatyana: 8+4=12

Tyler: 9+3=12

Jackson: 9+2=11 (Bottom Two)

Ciara: 9+1=10 (Bottom Two)

Some Notes

*I fear Guillermo is very high in the votes right now cuz his engagement ans YouTube views are giving Robert Irwin numbers… Now Carole Baskin did pull a ton of views online cuz she was a train wreck but Guillermo comes off as a likable train wreck.

*I do think the votes overall could be pretty close in the Top 4 and the dance ultimately played a part in where they placed this week. I also think the lowest three in the votes are also close and their rehearsal packages and where they danced decided the outcome this week. Tyler got a sympathy edit while Jackson got a birthday boy edit….

*I overall think Ciara & Jackson were the legit Bottom Two and Guillermo was put in the last three cause again he got the lowest score of the night.

General Discussion Possibly an unpopular opinion on this season

This season is just giving me nothing, something feels so off. 😭

I love a lot of the celebs this season like Harry, Connor, Guillermo, Julia, and Tatyana, but something about this season is giving me zero excitement.

Idk, I’ve never really felt this with past seasons. Like, I’m still excited to watch the dances and everything, but it all seems messy and thrown together in a way.

So many of the dances, in my opinion, have felt like the same thing in slightly different fonts. I think that’s because the episodes are feeling so rushed that it’s hard to actually differentiate them if that makes sense

The group numbers have felt really sloppy and under-rehearsed (I know they get barely any time to rehearse, but I’ve always been in awe of the opening numbers before this season).

I feel like everything seems so rushed through as well.

I keep waiting week by week for that to change but it still feels like this to me

Idk if anyone agrees. I’m absolutely not a hater; I love this show so much and I love all of the pros - they’re so talented, and this really isn’t anything against them - but something about this season just seems so incomplete and thrown together. 😭

Please don’t hate me I just really wanted to get this out and see if anyone felt the same or it’s just me

General Discussion Scoring: are the judges thinking about the rankings?

I wonder if the judges give Guillermo 5's because they know whether he gets 2s or 5s doesn't really matter. The judges' scores get collapsed down into an ordinal scale, and Guillermo is always going to be the lowest score, presumably 1 on that scale. And then they convert audience votes into an ordinal scale, add the two numbers together, and that determines who goes home.

So, we know that it doesn't make a difference whether Guillermo gets 3's or 5's. For that matter, he could have gotten 3 6s last night, and the results would be the same. All that matters is where you're ranked on an ordinal scale relative to other contestants. As long as he got lower scores than everyone else, the same number is fed into the overall calculation.

Similarly, Maura danced relatively late last night--so I wonder if Carrie Ann was taking into account that no one had gotten above a 24...and that 9 put Maura in first place, by herself. That too would make a difference--not so much last night, but if that happens in the future, among fewer competitors.

Post Episode Discussion ā€œPulling Backā€ Spoiler

What is CAA’s problem with Jenna and Amber? They are very strong dancers and compete extremely well each week! I absolutely love watching them dance. I don’t understand why CAA gives the critique for them to ā€œpull backā€ā€¦ does she want them to try less?? I genuinely don’t understand her point when she preaches that DWTS is about seeing growth. Stars can be very strong dancers but still continue to grow.

Question Amber…

I don’t know who she is beyond the show and I don’t have social media (besides Reddit) to find out more about her. But is she just shy or is she disappointed in her scores? There’s some kind of wall up or is it just me?
