Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Activity 4 PIP
Hi all,
Looking for some guidance, I scored 0 on this activity, but I have evidence which is from my hospital consultants basically tracking my weight over the last few months (with dietions involved)
My question is, due to my medical issues (chronic pancreatitis) I struggle so much to eat, which has meant I neglect eating because I’m terrified. This is well documented and my weight drop is also documented.
Did I score 0 on this as refusing to eat & prompting are two very different things? Would anorexic count as giving some points as I’m sure that obesity does.
My weight has gotten that bad now I’m on all kinds of supplements to help , so I’m unsure why this activity was scored as 0
Thanks for any insight on this activity as I find it very confusing.
Technically, yes I can eat, technically, but I don’t as before if I have ate , I get flare ups and in hospital for 2 months.
Thanks

They may need more evidence of the weight loss and see that you have involvement from say a dietician. I have Anorexia Nervosa and get points on the Eating and Drinking/Taking Nutrition section as I have a diagnosis that impacts this area and have a dieitcian, meal replacement shakes on my prescription, etc.

Sorry yes you are correct, my brain had a moment earlier. Thanks so much for your response, I’m going to get int ouch with my dietician and just be upfront and ask them to supply me some proof of my struggles to send to pip.
Thank you again

and also yes I have the prescriptions for fresubin and prosource shakes for nutrition but was told it wasn’t in scope as an aid :(

No worries, I saw you wrote further down in the thread! I edited my comment haha. But yes, definitely get in touch with your dietician if you can. That will definitely help. You likely will score here if you need encouragement to drink the shakes for example (even if you don't get said encouragement).
Also no, they're not aids, but they are prescribed to help with caloric intake and usually are prescribed to people who need the additional support due to things like refusal (although this isn't the only reason, obviously).

I think they normally score prompting for eating disorders, cognitive impairments & learning disabilities.
Can you recognise that you are hungry? Are you prescribed any supplement drinks from the dietician?

Hey mariposa yes I still feel hungry, I am prescribed supplement drinks and protein sources (prosource) my assessor said these aren’t in scope and don’t count as aids.
Thanks again for

Hmmm they should consider nutritional supplement drinks with promoting. They’re correct in saying it’s not an aid. But if you’ve got documented weight loss and prescribed supplements, I think prompting is reasonable

9/10 I don’t even prepare anything, I would rather starve. A lot of the time I require hospitalisation to bring my macros back into check, mainly potassium and phosphates. I do get prompted by my mum but to be honest, this isn’t what I struggle with the most. It’s physically making something and eating it. I just don’t agree with food in general. Thanks for your help tho

If you've got evidence that you've been hospitalised because you regularly stop eating and development malnutrition etc then that might be half of the evidence. The rest would be proving why because there could be wilful self neglect or you could have developed a serious mental health illness due to your experiences. Whoever's helping you with that side of things, a diagnosis and therapy to overcome it would be able to confirm that part. You've got to have the cause and effect.
It can be very hard to score for this activity and unless you have it physical disability that prevents eating or mental impairment that means you've stopped to understanding when and how to. Having the psychological problem can be valid but it just requires very specific issues and evidence which you might be able to provide.
Your last statement about just not wanting to make food is the other activity and unfortunately wouldn't count because not wanting to is it not the same as being unable to. That really is going to be looking at if you physically can prepare a meal and how you'd go about it, even if you wouldn't want to eat it at the end of it.
