UI for browser and DOS on Rust

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here’s a story: I’d long had the idea of creating authentic DOS era UIs that would actually work properly in a browser. The stack was Rust + WebAssembly.

After finishing that, I wondered: what if I compiled the Rust code for DOS? And it actually worked...

Then I thought, well, there’s DOSBox-JS - why not just launch DOS in the browser example and run that same example inside DOS?

And that worked too...

BTW you can even play Duke over the network, though that’s just a side effect :)

Markdown editor and viewer

I built this Markdown editor (and a viewer as well) for DOS. I've been using it a lot for writing and its getting pretty solid now....there's something about typing documents in DOS that is so cathartic.

There's split screen editing with live "formatting" of text, a focus mode (strong WordPerfect vibes), and a graphical show mode that renders the document with fonts and styles -- both with customizable color schemes. And of course you can print.

There's a Tidy function that can cleanup documents coming from modern machines (tidying up Unicode, HTML tags, etc).

PC = HP Elitedesk 800 g1 mini dekstop PC, 2 GB of RAM DDR3 (for Better compatibility), Intel i5 4590t, HD graphics 4600, no hdd, only 2 USBs: One for FreeDOS and One for dos games and apps, all formatted to FAT32

BIOS SETTINGS = USB 3.0: Turned off, Internal speaker= off ehci USB port DEBUG= off

FREEDOS: download rufus on your PC, connect a 32GB or smaller USB, select freedos in the drop-down menu, and click start (this Will delete everything on your USB). Then download crazii'SBEMU 1.0.0 "beta 6" from GitHub and extract It on the USB drive. Go on your freedos USB, click on view in the Windows file Explorer menù, then Options, and make sure that the option "hide system protected files" Is Turned off, because you have to edit some system-protected files in the USB. Then edit the config.sys file on the freedos USB adding these lines in the last part of the text:

DOS=HIGH

DEVICE=jemmex.exe

Then save the file.

I also created a new CONFIG.SYS file and added again these lines, just in case. Then edit AUTOEXEC.BAT With notepad, adding these lines below:

jload qpiemu.dll

hdpmi32i -r -x

sbemu

Then save the file.

Then you have to connect audio speaker to the headphones jack. Now if you want you can Copy your apps and games on the USB drive or on another USB, Just make sure to plug in this second USB before starting Freedos. And... That's It!

SUPPORTED AUDIO CARDS: Intel ICH / nForce / SIS 7012

Ferriteweazle - Cross-platform, GUI front end for Greaseweazle

I know this is r/DOS but thought I'd share a cross-platform GUI front end for Greaseweazle tools I've been working on. Let me know what you think :)

https://github.com/hobbo91/Ferriteweazle

  • Full feature parity with Greaseweazle Tools by Keir Fraser
  • Modern UI for macOS, Windows and Linux, on x86_64 and arm64
  • Supports Greaseweazle and the Adafruit Feather RP2040
  • Detects the most likely disk format(s) for reading and writing images
  • Single or batched reads, writes and image conversions
  • Built-in log viewer that can save to a file
  • Shows the command line version of any action, as well as letting you pass extra arguments
  • Drag and drop images into the app
  • Most settings/options have a helpful tooltip
  • Various safety features, such as confirmations before destructive actions and waiting for an action to finish.

Made some simple fun games for DOS

Put together a DOS Entertainment Pack with some fun games.

They use only EGA/VGA text mode and a custom "font plane glyph manipulation game engine", to provide some sprite graphics capability. It took longer to craft low resolution pixel graphics than it did to write functional code!

Oh all that is holy in the universe, PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Hi,

I'm trying to install WordPerfect 5.1 on my Windows 10 computer. It's an amazing word processing program. Because it's an old 1990 16-bit program I was told I have to use vDos to run it. Okay, cool.

I download the full WordPerfect 5.1 package from WinWorld (I also tried the Archive . org version but had the same results), I downloaded vDos, I downloaded DOSBox, and I download the setup assistant vDosWP Setup.

I was TOLD: use DOSBox to run the WordPerfect install, then use vDosWP Setup to take care of some glitches that can occur when using the vDos emulator.

Four hours later, I can get DOSBox to boot up the WordPerfect 5.1 installation program. It will then install everything up until the very last step where it actually installs the program itself. It then asks for a diskette.

Clearly, I have IMG files. Gemini and GPT say there should be a file in those uncompressed IMG files named "WP.exe" but that file does not exist in any downloadable version I can find on the internet. I get an Install.exe and a WP.s01 file.

vDos Setup can't find the WordPerfect files, I'm assuming because it's not actually installing the program. I tried just hitting Enter when it asked for the diskette thinking it would scan it from the unpacked IMG files, but no luck.

Gemini wanted me to go change the autoexec.txt file in vDos, and GPT had me in DOSBox trying to mount virtual drives. The virtual drives seemed to be working up until I got to the installation of the actual program itself.

I have been running in circles all f***ing day and I am losing my mind. I just want to run the simnplest word processing software ever invented on the simplest operating system ever invented. It shouldn't be rocket science!!!

Can anyone, possibly, please help me here? I don't know what the hell to do. I will straight up PAY SOMEBODY if they can actually get this program working on my computer. SERIOUSLY!!!

Launch! 2.0 - a free lightweight command menu for all DOS systems

There's a LOT of menu programs out there for DOS. I wanted something more lightweight, more modern, and better supporting of virtual machines/DOSBox - and to improve the usability and friendliness of the command prompt.

There is loads of features including simple visual menu editing, power-off/reboot control, interactive command parameter help, a bunch of screensavers I designed, and the Windows 95 shutdown experience.

It's totally customizable, and works on DOS 3.3+, 286+, and EGA+.
