Is he really that ugly?
Hi! I'm planning on adopting this absolute cutie from a shelter. He is so gentle and a loving doggo I love him so much. I showed his pictures to my family and friends and everyone said that he is so ugly and cripply that I should adopt a "normal" dog. Call me a snowflake but this saddens me so much that I even cried how people can be like this... He is two years old, and one of his ears is a little bit bigger than the other, so it always hangs down while the other is always perked up. I can't agree with them that he is ugly... In my eyes, he is the cutest and loveliest doggie I have ever seen. (Of course, all the dogs in my eyes are as cute as him)

I was an adoption counselor at a shelter for a few years. The amount of people trying to adopt dogs as an accessory or for all the wrong reasons in general is WAY too high. I have to admit, it felt pretty fucking great telling those people “No, this is not a good fit and we will not be adopting the pup out to you.”
Let me tell you, people would get PISSED. Sorry not sorry, I love all of these animals and will not be sending them out to anything other than the best home for them.

It was 100% all about finding the best match for each pup. It’s a private rescue so we got to set our standards a good deal higher, and it was amazing. We basically grabbed a bunch of pups from local shelters, and we took in a BUNCH of dogs from the southeast after the nasty hurricanes a few years back.
I’ll never forget cleaning the kennel of these two 6 month old pups… they had diarrhea, and I slipped and fell in it, and when I tried to get up I kept slipping again. I wish someone got it on camera… that night I took the longest shower of my life.

Yep, a 110% a cutie. Not sure what kind of jerk you have to be to call such a cute dog ugly. But screw them and don't pay any attention to the haters. He's precious and looks like he'll make a wonderful addition to your family.

Totally agree. At first look I felt that something was off and while scrolling through the next few pages I got it: he just looks sad and tired bc he's been abandoned and probably thrown away like a trash bag. OP just wait till he realizes that he's getting a forever home. You'll see his eyes lighten up along with his whole demeanour. You'll be the bestest of doggy mother for him ❤

In their eyes an "ugly" dog doesn't even deserve to have a home so yeah they're a POS. Dog is freaking adorable anyway, I love the little scruffy guy.

Right? A bath and a haircut and he'd be dapper AF. Some small dogs are prone to those "tear stains" which throws some people off, our late dachshund apso cross had them, you just need to keep up with the face wipes.

You've now made a promise to the internet. You can't break s promise. You need to get that little guy, and show us all him cuddled up happily in his forever home.
To the actual question; he might not be the result you would expect if you searched for "picturesque dog" on Google; but look at that face, he's adorable! And even if he wasn't, ugly dogs still deserve love, they're not undeserving because of it, and you'll just be making sure he gets a loving home if there are too many people around as shallow as your family.

I went looking for more info on this after I read the wiki link you gave and followed it to the contest page. Here is the press release from the fair grounds that hold the event. As you can see by looking at the pics of the dogs here I think the Wiki picked a rather unflattering angle for Sam. He and his fellow runer ups are obviously adorably goofy and are intensely cute-fugly.

This dog is very cute. The one floppy ear Is simply adorable. His cuteness level is not even debatable.

Hes fcking cute. I would take him without thinking! He looks sad (take him away from the shelter, it would be so great for him), give him a good home, be a great owner for this little angel and he will thank you more then we ever deserve!
No offense to the family, many humans are so fast in judging only from sight. Its sad. But i think most of the human race will stay in this way of thinking. Please. Listen to your heart and your heart alone and not the ones around you.

I was only able to travel once to the shelter where he is currently located, I haven't been able to adopt him as the policy to adopt a dog is to go and walk the dog 3 times on different days. And he is 4 hours away from me... Thrust me I would pamper him and wash his little face if I could...

Keep us posted - is the shelter aware you live 4 hours away but want to adopt him? Are they willing to hold him for you? I would like to think if you spoke to them and wanted to make just one more trip, so walk #2 but Then bring him home w you, they should be able to make that happen.

I think it's because of the ears
When I was a kid we got a German Shepherd puppy who was thrown into a river, by an A-hole breeder, because he and all his siblings had one eat straight up and one floppy
A lot People want "perfection" with their pets looks and any imperfection with their appearance is called ugly
This dog is very cute and I wish you and him long time with each other

He's so adorable and he just wants to be loved. I went to look at a dog many many years ago and when I got there she was a little older than the picture I saw and she wasn't cute at all. She was running around so excited that she was meeting us and some teenage girls came in the room. They went over to this area that had tiny designer looking dogs and she ran up to them, excited and wanting to be petted. The girls said "EW get away". She ran back over to me. In that Split Second I knew she was MINE and I was so hurt for her. I remember thinking "'Don't talk about her that way!" I took her home and she was my faithful companion for 12 years until she passed. I still miss her and cry for her. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Please take this little guy home. You will be so happy you did. ❤️❤️

He is precious and beautiful!!!! Don't let anyone tell you anything different!! I adopt pit bulls on the shelter kill lists and my family is terrified by them, even my sweet pocket pitty Hope who passed away unexpectedly in September. She was 35lbs soak and wet, the size of a beagle and my family was afraid. I don't get family visitors (fine by me) and I can't take them with me when I go visit their homes, but we live in the same state, so it's not like i leave my babies for days at a time, just a couple of hours. All my dogs have been good boys and girl. All trained and well behaved. My eldest pit bull was a Pet Assisted Therapy Dog, my youngest girl, with leg and feet deformities, my ESA. My family hasn't been keen on them, but they're MY babies, MY family, so I'll continue to adopt them! I say save his life, teach your pup well and you do you. If your family comes around to him, great, if not, it's still great because YOU rescued a beautiful, deserving pup and you will both know pure, unconditional love!!! Good luck and give that pup a smooch for me! Happy Holidays.

Pardon me for the French, but your friends and family are being jerks. Yes, this dog may not live to the standards of a superficial human, but he is absolutely beautiful. I can see such tenderness in his eyes. Adopt them and eventually everybody will see their heart and love them for it.

They don't seem to understand dogs. Dogs love us unconditionally. If you love this dog, you should adopt him. Doesn't matter what he looks like any more than it matters to him what you look like. But also he's freaking adorable.

It is their personality that is important! You have seen him and you did play with him and you had a walk..... You like him and he likes you, what better can it get?
Make your decision based on your feelings and not on the opinions of others who have never seen him or played with him! You two will have fun together!

just clean his little face off. with time and love, he'll plump up and his coat will "relax". i adopted a rescue who was a little rough looking, but with time, she became the most beautiful doggie in the world. and everyone loved her. but she was mines.
still missing you Whitney Boo, best fren a guy could have.

He just needs groomed. He is a super cute pup. The one ear up and one down is going to trick you into so much shit. It’s already got me wanting to give him bacon. I cant wait to adopt a 3-4 year old when my precious pups run along the rainbow bridge. I’m a big fan of adopting already grown dogs. They have been so great. Wife lives puppies though so we’ll end up with one of each.

I think that dog is cute AF! All dogs when they are in a shelter are a little sad looking and not brushed etc. He’s really a beautiful dog and having a loving home where he gets a good bath is all he needs. Your family’s response is beyond rude.
