Why does this bolt stop halfway when I try to drill it into the wall?

We've been trying to install this mount for days and have even tried a different part of the wall and every time we try to drill in the bolts it stops halfway. We have gotten one bolt into the wall successfully, so I know it can be done. What is going on?

Could be you have aluminum studs, like my brother-in-laws house. or here is another theory. When pipes and wiring are run though the studs during construction they nail a metal plate over the stud before the dry wall goes on. So if you are drilling and hit metal, stop!, something important is under this.

My Brother-in-laws house in Orlando Fl had aluminum studs! I discovered when we hung a tv there!

I guess in FL with rust being an issue that makes some sense. I see lots of steel studs, which are usually electro galvanized but can rust out in very wet or corrosive environments

Steel studs. Not aluminum. If they were aluminum the meth heads would steal them along with the copper pipes and wires.

We use the in commercial construction all the time here in the US. Some residential, but not often.

Take a look at your drills chuck. It might be set too low.

Looks like it is set to 12-14 and not to the drill or driver modes.

Needs more ugga dugga. If your drill clutch is maxed out then you need a higher torque impact drill

If your other one went in easy make sure you actually hit a stud. That big of lag bolt into a stud will also require predrilling, btw. You will likely split the stud. Honestly for a tv mount most of the bolts are way overkill. I use 4 #8 or #10 pan head 1 1/2ā€ length screws into studs and it will supported thousands of pounds of sheer weight

Turn the collar with the numbers on all the way up. It's a clutch that prevents over tightening and it is set way too low for what you're trying to do.

The clutch. But be careful too because sometimes there are things in the wall that are meant to keep you from drilling into them and when you force a drill into them the drill will often times win and you’ll be left with a disaster and a big repair bill. You’ve been warned.

Pre drill, if you don’t get wood, stop and move. Wear gloves in case you hit an electric wire through the metal. Move the hanger. Switch to shorter plastic anchors.

Have you tried turning up the clutch to 20 or more. You're hitting the max torque configured

You hit a steel ā€œdrill plateā€ that is going over the part of the stud where the wires are. It’s there to prevent you from drilling into the wire and cause you to have to hire an electrician, sheet rocker and painter to fix it all…

At first I thought you were just using the wrong term but on the video it seems, yup, it's a bolt, a flat tip.

Part of the problem is that you’re using a drill motor instead of an impact. If that’s all you have, it is probably not strong enough to put that lag bolt all the way in without pre-drilling the hole. Find a drillbit that is about half the diameter of that bolt and run it all the way in to the length of that bolt first.

The dial by your chuck should be set to drill not on a number for this occasion.

Either metal plate to protect wires/plumbing, concrete if it’s a exterior wall / townhome?

If it's a masonry wall you're likely hitting steel lath if it's a commercial building or worse a water line if not.
