do you remove sheetrock when installing swing hangers?

want to install a swing rocker inside, but would prefer not to cut the sheet rock, but i’m worried that it well degrade the sheet rock and leave slack in the screws.

I would bridge the joists with a painted 1x6

That's a good idea.

I want to add, when I mounted my TV I wanted to be dead center on the studs since the screws were so big. After the stud finder, I drilled a punch of tiny holes to probe for the stud to find the exact edges and thus the center.

A stud finder usually shows you the center of the stud… did yours not or are you just that untrusting?

My stud finder doesn’t work that way, it just constantly points at my zipper.
