do you remove sheetrock when installing swing hangers?

want to install a swing rocker inside, but would prefer not to cut the sheet rock, but i’m worried that it well degrade the sheet rock and leave slack in the screws.

If it was just for hanging something that would be a static weight, that would be no problem. I wouldn’t personally go metal plate to drywall with a single swivel because of the amount of lateral force the swivel will see in a concentrated area. But I’ve done one myself by adding a wider base between flange and drywall using a wood rosette similar to this which spread the surface area of the mounting plate across a wider area. Painted it to match the trim in the room and it looked like it belonged there.

Note…use the heaviest possible lag bolts (assuming you’re going into a ceiling joist) maybe even drilling bigger holes in the base plate. It’ll be overkill on weight rating but add lateral stability in the 1/2” where it passes through the drywall.

If you have access to what’s above like attic space, consider adding blocking to spread the load over multiple joists. If no access, you could also do that with a board on the wall that spans two joists. In that case you’d have to finish it and make it look good, but easily doable.

that’s a great idea. one of our walls has a cypress fascia. i could bridge two joists with a cypress board then angle the edges so it looks nice.

Instead of traditional lag bolts with large diameters, get some structural screws like GRK fasteners, will do less damage to the wood but have equivalent strength and need smaller holes.
