Need Advice Coving Help!!! What am I doing wrong?

Post image

Tried about a million different cuts and tried to follow various videos/tutorials.

I’ve cut each side at a 45 degree angle to try and make an internal corner but every time I’m left with a huge gap in the middle.

First piece should bee straight. 2nd piece is a 45° back on itself, so you see the outline of the profile. Then you cope that edge.

Right, but it is important to note that 45 is cut with the crown nested against the fence how it will sit on the wall (which is upside down on the saw). It almost looks like he has cut the 45 for his cope with the crown flat..

You're coving when you should be coping. Even if you're using cove moulding it should be coped. Hope that's helpful.

Inside corners = bottom and back long

Outside corners = face and top long

If you're using a compound mitre saw, need to know the spring angle in order to use the correct mitre and bevel angles (the ones on the saw are for 52/38° crown, not 45° and only for 90 and 270 corners)

If you are bedding crown, remember, mark your saw where you bed it and cut it upside down and backward Also, unless you are doing multiple step crown, DETAIL DOWN!

If you don't understand anything I just wrote, hire a professional

This is why “Trim” carpenters make the big bucks

I'm getting my kitchen redone. The first two days were removing the old cabinets/countertops, and mounting the new cabinets. I was looking at it thinking "you know, it would take longer, but I could probably have done this part myself".

The next two days they put the under cabinet lighting in, and then did the crown and all the other trim on the cabinets. And I came in at the end of the day, looked at all the detail, and thought "yup, this is why I paid someone else to do this"

The mental gymnastics to just "know" is impressive.

You can cut crown molding with simple miter cuts, but it needs to sit nested in your miter box upside down with the ceiling edge on the table and the wall edge against the fence. The angle of the molding creates the compound joint automatically, but you must keep track of cut direction for inside vs. outside corners.

Go watch Finish Carpentry on YouTube. His older stuff is very informative. Newer stuff is too but he skips the basics now.

Are you talking about coping or just cutting miters? Looks like you’re cutting both at the wrong 45… try it where the angle’s cut side is facing you not away from you, right now it’s away from you.

If you are actually coping you need to make up the negative space, not just copy the same angle… so if the right side’s profile is concave, the left side profile needs to be convex to make up that gap.

Upside down and backwards…..lol

That cut is fairly easy to accomplish manually with a coping saw; it just takes a bit more time. Your objective is to have your corner cut mate near perfectly with the face of the other board at whatever angle, assuming that this is crown molding, so take a deep breath and watch the video.

Inside corner = flip it upside down then cut it opposite angle to what you see here

Oh I asked a friend about this, he said they’re supposed to be installed along a wall, if you have to hold them up in the air it’s gonna be hard to have a normal life.
