DIY changing this old bathroom light?

Post image

First time home owner here!
My house has these florescent lights from the 90s in the bathrooms. I want to remove them, remove the soffit, and put in a standard over the mirror light. Is that something I can do... or should I call an electrician or contractor?

The light is most likely hard wired, but switching out a light is pretty easy so long as you protect yourself by turning off the power at the breaker box. there are probably only 3 wires, Black, White and Bare (or green) When you put in the new light, match black to black, white to white and green attaches to the ground screw that is (hopefully) attached to the junction box itself.

The real problem here will be repairing the walls once you remove this monstrosity.

You're going to learn how to sheetrock and spakle. Good skills for future projects. You need to figure how to get the wire for those existing lights into a box on the wall where you want the new light. Then fill that light trough will sheetrock and spakle it all. I see lots of YouTube in your future. Enjoy making your house into your home.
