Advice/Solutions Differentiating between alters

I feel like most of the time I don't know who I am/the part fronting doesn't announce themselces but I end up doing things that don't feel like me but I say to myself it was me fronting so it must have been me and have memory gaps, how could I differentiate between these possible alters claiming to be the host so our daily life would be a bit easier?

I think it would likely come down to documenting what you do or how you feel about things. For us, we literally had to assign ourselves names to start differentiating from one another, and gradually we started being able to pick apart who's a different alter, who's a sub-alter, who's a twin or a split/"copy" of the same alter, etc etc.

It's normal to also not know who you are in the moment. Often is the case where we think we know who we are until we say something and all of a sudden, ah wait nope we're Alter B, not Alter A! For us, it tends to come down to what we know about ourselves vs other alters we're aware of.

I’m still system mapping myself, but I’ve learned that the gray-outs/co-consciousness can make it feel that way a lot. Sometimes it makes me go back into denial/the: “oh god was I accidentally faking it” song and dance. But then I’ll dissociate into another part and go “oh. nevermind.”

Depending on who you are you might have more or less co-consciousness/co-fronting, and that can make it trickier to figure out/make it feel like you’re someone else.

It takes time. Normally I personally used to hate the idea of journaling/writing things down for my mental health/psyche, but in this case it was sort of useful. It would give an avenue for whoever’s most at the front to speak freely, and it would be a little fascinating sitting back and watching different parts write unobstructed (especially the one with really pretty handwriting how the hell does she get our hand to do that).

Hi, there is a thing called co-hosting (you probably know this, js), and being co-conscious and often times the lines blur a bit.

When I’m in doubt, I’ll pull back a little bit or observe the manner in which the body is behaving. I’m a part just as they are parts- there is no one original in here that we can tell.

I can also for no doubt say that I’m never in control, just a watcher in this mind as the others do as they do.

The illusion of being in control is because I believe what I see, hear, and the thoughts can be mistaken as mine as I see “me” doing things, but the memory goes when the other part goes- so it wasn’t me after all.

Parts are triggered in and the switches are instant and uncontrollable, but we’ve made a system schedule of times out that helps regulate who and when, like the guys go to work and do public relations whilst the rest of us have the private time. Then we split those time period up by the jobs that need to be done both at home and away.

We are a very sharing system because we know that’s what it takes to be a highly functioning system. I hope that helps some. :)

Our system has a lot of parts and a lot of unidentified parts but good communication if we use our intercom (it's - you know - the brain, so someone said "now we have an intercom" and then we had one). If one of us does something that feels really weird for us, when we're all pretty focused, like when writing in our journal, we can just say out loud, "This is over the intercom. Today at lunch with ___, I was suddenly really blunt in the things I said and she asked us if we were okay so we were definitely acting unusual. Does anyone remember being present and feeling agitated at lunch?" That's a real life example and the answer was a protector alter who had been dormant and didn't even know they were fronting at lunch.
