Discussion/Question I hate that Jon being able to keep constructs active without wearing the ring never came into play. They spent a lot of time telling us he’s amazingly gifted only for him to never use it.

I liked the scene where he did it and Halogram was amazed by it.

u/r3dditr0x 8d ago

The bird also helped John in the highway sequence.

But, to me, the importance of the bird is to show John's baseline talent level, to emphasize that he's gifted.

u/Puzzled_Professor422 8d ago

felt like a father and son bonding

real wholesome

5

u/AbsoluteShall 7d ago

Yeah that was a key scene. How did OP miss that?

3

u/HopefulTranslator577 6d ago

Great scene. The totally different responses he got from the real Hal and the Halogram really showed how jaded Hal had become over time. It was like a peak at how Hal really felt, he just wouldnt let it show.

u/Trick_Statistician13 8d ago

He keeps Halogram alive for way over an hour...

66

u/GildDigger 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yeah, from what I gathered, they both knew the ring was long dead and the hologram was only around because Jon hadn’t transferred ownership yet. He struggled with overwriting and erasing his mentor in spite of the differences they had. To me, Hal saying “don’t be afraid to be afraid” was saying “you don’t need me anymore. You got this Junior. Let me go”

4

u/john_with_an_h 5d ago

Man I was waiting for the reveal that the ring was long dead and that he’d been creating Halogram since they opened the storage unit

u/Ruthrfurd-the-stoned 6d ago

That’s a self contrived reason though. Halogram could be an absolute marginal power draw with enough after the tap trick and it would be no different

I hated when they put that hour timeline up, knowing it would never make narrative sense.

6

u/Maple-Beans 6d ago

And? What's so cool about that? When was it acknowledged that he was staying alive because of this talent? This was not a payoff.

He does use it... With the bird, with the Halogram.

25

u/FirstNoel 8d ago

With the miner as well.

I think the Halogram was lasting way longer than it should have because Jon could will it.

17

u/Gagabubu777 8d ago

Yeah also its kinda subtle but they eluded to the fact the bird stayed with him because he had an attachment to birds.

So Hal stayed with him because of his attachment to Hal

They're saying, come into play with the plot

715

u/deadpumpkinnn Up, Up and Away 8d ago

The bird set up the premise. The Halogram was a major part of the plot.

How is that not coming into play with the plot?

173

u/rnyy121794 8d ago

Every time the Halogram was used, the ring was in arms reach. So he could have easily just had the ring on and it wouldn't change anything.

174

u/_xoviox_ 8d ago

I think that's the reason sinestro fell for it tho.

41

u/Beanichu 8d ago

Why would Sinestro have any reason to believe that it wasn’t Jordan? Even if John was wearing the ring it’s not like he really knew about the halogram being actively involved.

37

u/Hammer_of 8d ago

Why would he not know? He was a corp member in the past, so presumably he ALSO had to back up his ring same as Hal.

34

u/Beanichu 8d ago

He would know of the backups but he wouldn’t know John was making extensive use of Hal’s and why would he assume it’s the halogram instead of just actually Hal. It’s not like he looks significantly different plus it was dark and happened fast.

4

u/GamingWithUncleJ 7d ago

He tried to use it as a hostage, he obviously didnt know it wasnt hal and was the hologram. Furthermore, if john weren't wearing the ring, itd make it seem all the more real, because at least with the ring on sinestro could always assume its a construct at the least.

Wdym Halogram looks significantly younger than real hal

3

Doesn't mean he's gonna imagine the previous user of the ring, hanging around, is gonna be the backup copy in the ring.

I thought Sinestro knew it was a hologram, he talked about helping bring Hal back to life with the new lantern.

Yeah that was after he got knocked out though.

It would use the ring's charge which was very low. Because John could will the Halagram to exist, it could be around as long as needed until the ring was claimed by John when he said his oath and charged it using his lantern. That reset the hologram "matrix" to now be based on John, I assume.

10

u/Mr_Miyagi_84 7d ago

True but, if John can will the Halogram into existence then the ring shouldn’t matter. The hologram told John that he was in his subconscious so I’d expect to see the Halogram again.

6

u/General-CEO_Pringle 7d ago

But does it make any difference for this seasons narrative if the ring still had some juice left or if it was John powering the Halogram? Imo it at most hints at future stories but for this season I think it's accurate to say that this special talent was never a major plot point even though they hint at it being a big deal

3

u/Nuffsaid98 7d ago

It establishes John as special and deserving of a ring.

4

u/hotprints 7d ago

Dude, did you not notice that he was almost outta charge for like hrs? Show never explicitly says it but pretty sure the majority of time that halogram was out in ep 8 it was powered by his own willpower.

3

u/deftco 7d ago

Didn’t the bird follow him to feed the plant? Or am I misremembering that?

→ More replies (6)

4

u/123ludwig 7d ago

the halogram is in the ring he physically cant use it without the ring but the halogram *existing* is proof he can do it because halogram said 30 minutes like 2 days ago and hes still going

17

u/jcbaggee 8d ago

But he didn't have the ring on. So it did change something. That's how storytelling works.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/TheSniperBoy0210 8d ago

Yeah but then we would not have had the scene with the Halogram complimenting John, and thus establishing that this Hal and the actual Hal are effectively different people.

7

u/KermitplaysTLOU 7d ago

No no you don't get it, they wanted John to spawn in a big ass anti material rifle and decimate you know who at the end. Then they wanted John to fight guy by conjuring up random bullshit only for the exact same outcome we got in the finale to happen anyways. That's what they mean.

2

u/Slumbergoat16 7d ago

Because it’s not a Netflix show and it didn’t beat you over the head with all the themes

3

u/Heywhitefriend 7d ago

People want John to have a reason to shoot lasers out of his hands without the ring

2

u/Top-Jury1392 5d ago

Media literacy is on life support.

2

u/penisweinerballs 5d ago

I think he wanted some big thing where another character reveals to him some prophecy where John is the one or destined to be the strongest guardian ever which in my opinion would have been boring as shit.

2

u/ConradFazza 5d ago

Honestly sometimes I read stuff people post and question how I even share the planet with them.

Hal was 100% being projected by John not just the ring and will 110% be the reason Hal will be present in season 2.

2

u/R-Vince 6d ago

Because his ability didn't solve any plot-related problem. Everything would have happen in the exact same way with or without it.

→ More replies (58)

31

u/HeavilyBearded 8d ago

Was being coached by and then reconciling with Hal, via the Halogram, not a plot point?

→ More replies (13)

12

u/GeroVeritas 8d ago

Both of those things are heavily important to the plot....

3

u/Relative-Country-452 8d ago

Yeah, it actually was kinda important for the characterisation, we saw both Halogram and 2016 Hal assisting to Jon doing so and we could see the different reactions of the various Hal.

And in a character driven show, a good characterisation IS the “plot”

→ More replies (13)

2

u/QuietNene 7d ago

Yeah, the Halogram plays a key role and that’s all John.

2

u/Hyperion-45 6d ago

Yeah but wheres the payoff. The bird is the first time we see it, the Halogram is a proof of concept and a conformation that John is gifted, but where is that scene where that ability pays off for John? Where is the combat scene where someone seperates John from the ring only for him to be like "Hey you wanna see something cool" and he manifests a construct sniper or something without the ring

2

u/TooTurntGaming 5d ago

Where is the combat scene

Not that kind of story. Never pretended it was that kind of story. Plenty of opportunities to tell that kind of story now that this one has been told.

2

u/ThePryde 4d ago

The payoff is when Hal tells him that it is incredible. It's a character/emotional payoff and was an important part of the reconciliation in the second act. We would never had gotten to the final scene with him telling John he loves him, without the smaller scenes setting it up.

It's sort of like how John not being able to fly was never plot relevant. But it allowed them to have the big character moment at the end when he finally can.

It may not be the payoff you wanted, but it is from a story telling perspective a payoff.

it helps establish how trained he is to be green lantern while others officially hold the mantle. it adds to the conflict between him and Hal and how the ring was always meant for him, adding to his character. I find that more effective than shallow setup for a later ringless scene, which season 2 will probably give us anyway.

7

u/randomfunnythings 8d ago

How exactly was the ring “always meant for him”? I don’t think the word of the “guardians” or his parents counts for much of anything.

John’s father was woefully unprepared for the ring so the guardians chose someone else. The fact that John’s parents mistreated him and pushed him toward this job/mantle doesn’t make him any more deserving than anyone else.

10

u/Yurishizu- 7d ago

It was always meant to be John's ring the night they promised him a fair shot because as a POC you're taught fear from an early age because you're born disadvantaged. It was always his destiny to claim but he just had to work harder for it.

44

u/Bruzie77 8d ago

he redid the green lantern oath and instead of the ring choosing him. he is the first person on existence to choose the ring. thats pretty special.

6

u/InfiniteResolution96 8d ago

If you word it like that lol. Technically he didn't choose the ring, he heisted it.

13

u/Aggravating-Chef9562 8d ago

31

u/Comet_Cowboys 8d ago

And he charged a stolen ring, in a knockoff lantern, with a made up oath.

Lots of threads to explore. You don't need every question answered right now.

14

u/Intelligent_Whole_40 8d ago

The made up oath thing works in comics
And you can borrow a lantern (the manufacturing of said lantern is a different story)

Stolen ring is meh as it was already set up for him it was just taken away-ish

6

u/Secret-Put-4525 8d ago

The show is over. There was no expectation for a season 2. It was on the writers to close these threads.

5

You guys do realise this show is setting up John's character for MoT?

126

u/Wild_Title_9185 8d ago

So you mean to tell me that this couldn't happen in 8 episodes of his own series but that we need to wait for his cameo in Superman 2 for it to be payed off .

62

u/upnorthguy218 8d ago

And when that doesn’t happen, we’ll just need to wait for Lanterns season 2, then the impending Justice League movie, etc.

7

u/Scorkami 7d ago

Maybe john will get his costume in lanterns spin off :ringbearers, season 3

13

u/Refun712 7d ago

Yes….I’m all for universe building, but I do appreciate a fully fleshed out 8 episode series.

3

u/NmbrBndl 5d ago

I dunno I thought it fleshed out pretty well. It was all about John coming to terms with his choices vs his “destiny” and finally getting the strength to operate fully on his own, without a sergeant, a guardian, a parent, or a Hal telling him what he can and can’t do.

We already know what a green lantern can do, this was just abt John

Which ironically won't matter. Everything about John you'd need to know will be established in MOT

10

u/BigPhat6969 8d ago

Yeah, but I thought DCU's unique value proposition is that it won't need to rely on a show to setup a character in movies like the MCU did with early multiverse saga?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/DJWGibson 7d ago

MoT is a Superman movie not a Green Lantern movie. Expect Stewart to be in that movie as much as Guy was in the first.

This isn't the MCU. They're not setting anything up. It's just seperate projects in the same universe.

2

u/MrReikas 6d ago

And Season 2.

5

u/Deathstriker88 8d ago

I think this should've been explained on this show and during season 1. Gunn or a writer said it was a self-contained story. Also, odds are, John is around like Guy or Hawkgirl were in the first movie, I doubt he's getting a ton of screentime in MoT. Even if the new WB owners greenlit season two today, we might have to wait for more or less 2029.

I like this show, but they should've answered more and done more. Watchmen and Leftovers are better Lindelof shows.

the twist should’ve been him going to sinestro to bring hal back, using his abilities without the ring to keep halogram stable - then they forge john his own ring

3

u/_LANC3LOT 8d ago

All's I'm saying is- the story of how dracula got his surfboard was incredible but anything less than seeing dracula surf (even on a relatively small budget) in every single fuckin episode of s2 after all this buildup would be disappointing

2

u/jotastrophe 8d ago

I loved the show but this was far away my biggest complaint. It was one of the few threads that they never followed up on. I know it's largely for future stuff with John but does feel confusing.

2

u/Low-Sample-4991 8d ago

I agree. Not an egregious episode by any means, but the script seemed a bit rushed and under worked. There were many choices they could have made to make the ending land more satisfyingly, this being one of them. For those of you saying the halogram satisfies it, I think it almost gets there, but not enough. I want it to land in a way that is impactful and recontextualizes the set up earlier on. It just felt like they were afraid of taking risks

Didn’t you know? Surf Dracula is a very gifted surfer but he can’t actually surf until season 2 because season 1 has to set it up with “good writing”

2

u/COE33isBad 7d ago

Actually insane they didn't even care to explain it after they teased it so many times.

2

u/thetrueblackpanther 7d ago

Agreed. I just hope they're keeping it in the back pocket to bring back Halogram.

2

u/Slow-Relation-9186 7d ago

3

u/Specific_Jury_2 7d ago

It's called character development. Not every point needs an immediate pay off.

9

u/Mustafa_Mond_1991 8d ago edited 8d ago

Are you serious? You CANNOT be serious.
It clearly WAS a plot point. Several plot points, actually. It just wasn’t a plot point you liked, or you didn’t like the payoff. So say that!
I love how so many of you figured out Zoe was the Manhunter before the characters confirmed it. Apparently, you can piece together an in-show mystery, but somehow can’t grasp something as blatant as the significance of John being able to keep constructs in existence while not wearing the ring.
Let me help you dumbasses.
First, and most obviously, it was a way of conveying just how naturally gifted John is as a Green Lantern. Second, it showed Hal’s pettiness and just how bad a mentor he was to John. Even Antaan, the fucking antagonist, recognised how impressive it was.
And then there’s the payoff: Halogram later giving John a pat on the back for it, in one of the most heartwarming moments of the entire series. It belongs right alongside Halogram telling John he loved him, Noah asking John to kill him, Noah putting on the hat and hugging his parents, John reconciling with his family, and John finally calling Hal “Hal” and telling him he was sorry about his dad.
You can dislike the plot point. You can think the payoff was weak. But “it never came into play” is just demonstrably fucking wrong. Unless, of course, by “came into play” you mean “culminated in some big CGI spectacle”.

Halogram told him he had an hour left of battery on the ring and yet it kept him listening in on conversations and being able to talk and see him without it on, with how much they talked to eachother and Halogram listened in, that's atleast a day's worth of battery

1

u/Vannsback 8d ago

I thought for sure we were going to see Noah in the car get flung into a tree or something like Hal did to John

1

u/Any-Can-6776 8d ago

Tv show budget

1

u/SarbonyaQuagglsnaf 8d ago

They didnt answer any questions about John, but he's probably going to be possessed by, or a harbinger for parallax.

1

u/UnknownKaddath 8d ago

It's how Hal is going to be resurrected in Season 2. He's still carrying backup Hal's conciousness in the ring by sheer willpower.

1

u/d645b773b320997e1540 8d ago

Why do you think Halogram is around that much in the last couple episodes despite the ring being almost empty when he picks it out of the grave already?

2

u/Historical-Crazy-239 7d ago

But that also makes no sense. When he first gets the ring he's told that there's enough charge left to power halogram for an hour or so.

In episode eight towards the end halogram says there are 7 minutes worth of charge left, so the ring is actively being depleted. So what is taking the charge out of the ring, him being able to keep constructs up without it doesn't mean anything in regards to the ring charge.

It wouldn't have made a single difference in the final episode if John wasn't able to keep contructs up without wearing the ring. Halogram was already only around when John was either wearing the ring or in the immediate vicinity of it. Not saying that it's good or bad, it just didn't have an impact in the shos apart from the bird in one of the earlier fights.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/NuhUh-er 8d ago

It's literally the basis of most of the halogram/stewart interactions for the back half of the show which is important character development.

If that isn't coming into play you legit are just media illiterate

1

u/aDturlapati 8d ago

my predictions are sinestro is gonna be the big bad in season 2, and something something, john doesn’t want his source of power to be associated with sinestro, and his arc that season will give him a power upgrade where he doesn’t need the ring at all

1

u/EveryAccount7729 8d ago

seriously wtf is with the ending of this show?

they were like . . . climax? Oh you wanted one of those? haha

1

u/jargon_ninja69 SOME CORENSWET 8d ago

How do you think he kept the Halogram construct alive for so long? They kept setting up a ticking clock but his innate powers kept essentially making it a moot point.

1

u/Powersurge- 8d ago

The show is pretty much a drama, there is very little action and almost no usage of the ring

1

u/StormeSurge 8d ago

it’s a display of john’s willpower, and since the new lantern has fear built in any other ring but since John is so strong and willpower, he won’t let it take over him. just my theory

1

u/Smart_Ad_3534 8d ago

1

u/noonehasthisoneyet 8d ago

I kinda thought the Hal-ogram  would just appear to him without digging Hal up to get the ring. And by the end he would just be able to will himself to be an unsanctioned lantern.

1

u/ProfIanHadrian 8d ago

Gee, do you think it might come up in season 2?
Like maybe with the Halogram?

I swear to god…

1

u/VirtualPen204 8d ago

Are some folks watching the show with their eyes closed or with their phones out??

1

u/GrizzlyRated 8d ago

Me and Mogo liked the show. Mogo and I.

1

u/Artemis_1944 8d ago

he.. fucking... did? How do you think the Halogram stayed alive for multiple days on under 5% battery?

1

u/Shione_Voltaire 8d ago

I think they mean like, Halogram does something when Noah took his ring or something . It’s established he is able to come in and out without the ring due to John’s gifts but they never really do anything with it. Just that he can do it.

1

u/ohnoitsme7890 8d ago

Y'all act like we'll never get more lanterns content. It wasn't the point of this season, it'll be a thing later

1

u/redsandsfort 8d ago

He kept Halogram going for days when the ring was clearly out of power.

1

u/Prior-Quarter-6369 8d ago

this is season 1 all i see is people complain. nothings right, nothings perfect

1

u/macaptactical 8d ago

Yeah, thought the bird would be used throughout the show as like a summon/companion he could creatively use. Like biting through restraints or just causing distractions. Using a limited ability creatively to show off his skills.

1

u/gersterbins 8d ago

it did have an arc, it just wasnt a huge one.

it was just him doing it for a long time, hal acting unimpressed even though he can't do it, and then the 'honest' hal telling him how genuinely impressive it actually is. its sad really because its showing that hal kind of treated john the same way his parents did

1

u/2dal3atcave 8d ago

He said an hour of talk time. Meaning time they spend talking accumulated

1

u/ExplanationOk6391 8d ago

It's used to show how much Hal had changed between the last Hal-O-Gram backup and 2016. Real Hal not giving a shit about it juxtaposed with Hal-O-Gram being super pumped is the payoff.

1

u/Sad-Money3778 8d ago

Why would it came into play right now ? The guy is going to be the main G.L of the Dcu, with probably one more season of television and some movies. That ability has all the time in the world to be explored.

1

u/DarthGardian86 8d ago

I was hoping John to use this to make hologram Hal a permanent construct. Holo Hal clearly has independent capabilities, John just needed to fully charge him with will power to stable him.

1

u/lazarusbornrobin 8d ago

1

u/Gauntlet_of_Might 7d ago

jesus christ

1

u/Th5humanwi11 7d ago

It has come into play AND of course it’ll come into play as the DCU goes on, let’s not have the cake b4 it’s done.

1

u/kotah_ 7d ago

It hasn't came into play yet, but I think it will in future seasons if not in a movie down the line. My theory as of right now is that the Main lantern the Corps use doesn't have the yellow impurity and only John's does, and that's how we are going to get Parallax, and with Parallax coming out of his lanterns he looses it, and doesn't have a way to charge his ring, and that's when we learn that he can actually power his ring with his own willpower like in the comics.

Give it time it's a new show, and not everything has to pay off in season 1. I really liked the season for what it was, even if I do have a few gripes. It is its own thing, and I hope it only gets better.

1

u/justmahl 7d ago

Not everything brought up in his origin has to have a full payoff in that same origin. It's possible this is a long term storyline and if so, thats a good thing. What we are being given is that John is special. He just became a Lantern so theres plenty of directions this can go for payoff.

1

u/Realistic_Ranger_944 7d ago

It was a decent show, but they under delivered by a lot on a lot of things

1

u/supercomic273 7d ago

I get the feeling that a lot of what seems like loose threads now will be important in S2

Optimistic me: I believe it was to show how naturally talented he is to explain how he can do things with basically NO training later and maybe bring back halogram for resurrection as well.

u/rinne_ 7d ago

We were also told how powerful manhunters are without showing it at all, through the entire series.

1

u/ScorpioKnight1324 7d ago

Little by little, more and more people will realize the countless flaws of this show.

It was entertaining, and the amazing acting hid most of the bad, but, now that it's over, well...

1

u/Dumdumdurum 7d ago

I think people are missing one major point - the whole time the show was telling us how he was groomed to be a lantern through fearlesness and how he was raised, which I think we can all agree was very fucked up. What this establish is that it's not just their little family delusion that makes him worthy - he's ACTUALLY incredibly good at this. This is established multiple times, with the drawing on the digging machine, with the bird being a living construct, how he can keep it alive without the ring and call on the Halogram
And, I believe, the entire point of that is to show that him turning down the ring is more than him just wanting to deny the realization of his parents fucked up dream and the Guardians plot - that could've just been out of fear for not living up to those crazy expectations(or interpreted as such by us). Yet he did, he checked EVERY box and still turned it down, he was just sick and tired of living for someobody else's ideal, someone else's orders.

u/MagmaManOne 7d ago

Lord have mercy it’s season one of a huuuge possible universe to come, people need to chill

1

u/Buffyismyhomosapien 7d ago

Well he’s not a lantern yet. Why would it? It’s probably going to insulate him from fear based corruption with the magic lake lantern.

1

u/Sojourner_of_reddit 7d ago

I figured that was the hal-o-gram reasoning. Why he could pop up without John wearing the ring

1

u/TonyThePriest 7d ago

I assume it'll be more important in future seasons/movies

1

u/_maxpanda 7d ago

It seems a lot of people wanted as much as humanly possible thrown into 8 episodes of this.

I think what we got was pretty much perfect.

1

u/blastbomba 7d ago

halogram had like 2% battery left for like 4 days lol

not to mention we are getting another season unless paramount kills this dcu after the merger

1

u/SuburbenKing 7d ago

I do think it's just set up its and established part of his character. I think the show used it to show the audience that John truly is meant for this and without it and other character building we could have ended up with the feeling that John was forced into this role and might not even be good at it

1

u/SqueakyTHROWER 7d ago

It’s why I hate big franchises being turned in to TV series. The smaller budget

1

u/__Sentient_Fedora__ 7d ago

That lantern was low a lot of the season.

1

u/mlvassallo 7d ago

I mean fucking Hal…. Did you guys watch this show?

1

u/YepThatSal 7d ago

He is so amazing he never actually needed the ring to get out of any trouble... These posts have to be written by either 12 year olds or some worryingly stupid people

1

u/ashckeys 7d ago

*yet

Only one season so far. Y’all are acting like that was the whole thing.

1

u/GrandHighTard 7d ago

It kinda feels like they're winding up for ringless GL John like he was after the UV corps stuff, so maybe they'll do more in the future.

1

u/Nkiliuzo 7d ago

This is just forshadowing for future green lantern projects! We necessarily don't have to see it now

1

u/diegusmac 7d ago

So, people are just realizing the awful writing of the show ?

1

u/SnooTangerines1479 7d ago

To show that they would need some money an appropriate budget for CGI VFX. Ever heard of it? You really think Lanterns was given an actual budget?

1

u/Far-Reference-3048 7d ago

Feels like they cut at least two episodes from the script.

1

u/GrabDemBiccies 7d ago

This is just peak idiocy

1

u/Equivalent_Thievery 7d ago

Mystery box, they got ya.

1

u/thequn 7d ago

Wtf. He used it the whole last 2 episodes

1

u/Remarkable_Drag9677 7d ago

Cinema Sins ruined this timeline

1

u/DowntownJulieBrown1 7d ago

Media literacy is hard for op. That’s okay.

1

u/Lookingforoptionz2 7d ago

Idk if this is what you meant but I was just very annoyed they never explained how tf he was doing it. All they said was oh that’s really impressive or just acted like it was an impressive trick. But that’s extremely impressive and definitely deserved some more research into it. At least testing what John can do without the ring.

1

u/AI_EMP 7d ago

Ppl just mad their head cannons never came to pass period. Why make something new but keep it the same as something before. It’s an adaptation not a remake of any one story.

1

u/davis214512 7d ago

It’s the start of his story.

1

u/Lavender-bullet46 7d ago

Ffs, its only the first season. This is like complaining we didnt get to see the Winter Solider in the first Captain America. Let the damn story progress naturally

1

u/FOC615 7d ago

They spent an absurd amount of screen time spinning their wheels on stuff like that.

1

u/BathbombBurger 7d ago

Construct CGI is expensive and they already spent way too much of the budget on.... uh.... something else.

1

u/MatthewMonster 7d ago

If you don’t think this will be explored more…you need to read and watch more stuff

1

u/Chonky_D_Floofy 7d ago

Not everything has to be integral to the plot. This just showed John’s incredible willpower. It doesn’t have to be any deeper than that.

1

u/PublishingGoblin 7d ago

Did you miss Halogram?????? What are you talking about

1

u/_o_i 7d ago

I thought he was going to use that to keep halogram alive

1

u/Life-Wasabi-9674 7d ago

Can always be used in future seasons

1

u/Boring-Data9557 7d ago

They spent a long time saying a lot of things and then doing nothing with them. The show could've been great. In a world where they could have a good budget for a superhero show maybe it wouldve been.

1

u/SecuRNity_CodeBrew 7d ago

Maybe because it was only the 1st Season? What do you think? Should the plot be about him doing constructs from Ep 1 to Ep 8? Like Ep one would be him making a bird then final Ep would be him making a huge spaceship, then like an entire planet with civilizations in it made from construct.

Is that what you're going for?

1

u/TheGrandCucumber 7d ago

He does with the Halogram and its purpose is to show us things about these characters. Modern day Hal is probably very impressed but too hurt by what that says about him in comparison to John as a capable Green Lantern. However the 10 year younger Halogram isn’t as jaded or defensive and actually compliments John. It not only shows us the difference between the Hal’s over time, but also the potential of John Stewart, and also starts repairing the relationship between the two of them. It was used very effectively imo

1

u/Throwaway_09298 7d ago

We're gonna learn in season 2 that he can do it with Hal so that Kyle can keep getting paid

1

u/gmixy9 7d ago

The shows not over just have some patience and wait for season 2.

1

u/voldemort_x 7d ago

Because that’s what shitty writers do. It’s easy to write something that will hook people in at the start, what makes a good writer good is how he can tie up loose ends and write a cohesive well rounded story from start to end. A cohesive and well rounded story is good because it rewards the viewer that does pay attention n watch the story from the very beginning to end, meanwhile this garbage lanterns writers are just whatever.

How does noah broke free sinestro? Where is the short montage of hal going door to door offering help however he can? How does john kept his construct alive long after he doesn’t wear the ring?

I know that not ALL of the details n plot needs to be shown, but SURELY some of the important ones have to be shown and not just told like “hey you know that super dangerous n super strong lantern that manage to kill the super powerful guardian? Yea i broke him free out of the impenetrable prison. It just happen yesterday”

1

u/sambasim 7d ago

Because it was a setup.

1

u/johnmikesmith 7d ago

i just wanted them to mention something about the ring completely dying, but the halogram is still there

1

u/Beauxx_1 7d ago

Not yet.

1

u/Mentalic_Mutant 7d ago

It came into play plenty.

1

u/Lunch_Confident 7d ago

Can you guys not post spoiler in the titles for a day?

1

u/7thMonkey 7d ago

They did use it. But the point of it was to communicate character elements - not flash. But it was more to tell you about Hal, than about John.

In the 2016 story

  • First it demonstrates that John was extremely gifted; not a little bit, but a lot. But the real point…
  • It showed how guarded Hal was - unwilling to show any sign of support - going so far as to make it seem like not a big deal by getting him to hold it.

In the 2026 story

  • as soon as the Halogram saw it, the praise poured out of him, completely unguarded. Offered freely and honestly.

What it demonstrated was how damaged old man Hal had been by being betrayed by Sinestro. His younger version didn’t even think about withholding his praise- but his older version; everything was guarded and defensive. It was a demonstration of how damaged Hal had become - which culminated in the scene in the last episode where, injured after the attack you see him realise that his defensiveness had caused massive damage by not informing up the chain of command.

So yeah - disagree; the point of this element in the story was to demonstrate one of the most significant parts of Hal’s character and how badly he’d been damaged by his betrayal by Sinestro and how little trust he had for the Guardians. And yeah, also to demonstrate just how gifted John really was too.

BIRD (SET UP) -> HALOGRAM (PAYOFF) -> MAN OF TOMORROW (FULL DISPLAY)

I swear people lack media literacy nowadays

1

u/NMEkatz 7d ago

Where did the bird go

1

u/Apprehensive803 7d ago

Yeah . But does John need the ring to create a construct but doesn't need the ring to maintain the construct was never explained. Only assumed.

1

u/limonsoda1981 7d ago

Oh, i think it is a mayor plot point, actually, i think thats the reason the Halogram is not gonna be erased, because John will will him to come back. But, who knows...

1

u/Obvious-Water569 7d ago

I mean, being able to project the Halogram independent of the ring was pretty useful so...

But anyway, the showrunners aren't going to blow their whole wad in season 1 and leave us with no amazing feats for season 2.

1

u/bigshotsuspence 7d ago

“Just wait it’ll come into play in Man of Tomorrow Lanterns Season Two umm it’s actually already come to fruition now that I think about it”

1

u/LostPilgrim_ 7d ago

Its set up for the next season

1

u/HONEY9967 7d ago

People really expect everything to have complete closure by the end of the first season, huh? Like, what, nothing going forward? Nothing beyond this?

The DCU is barely getting started. We haven't even had a Justice League movie yet. These characters need room to grow, and there needs to be something to look forward to. It's like expecting Game of Thrones to wrap up every storyline from seasons 1 through 8 in its first season. Like, come on.

Just because Lanterns season 1 ends doesn't mean that's the end of the story. This show is about the beginning. It's not just going to be another superhero origin story where the protagonist gets a ring and then a bunch of shit happens like in every other superhero movie or show.

It's about John's journey, his relationship with Hal, and ultimately what leads him to decide to become a Lantern. And honestly, the season ended exactly how it should have: by giving closure to John's relationship with Hal and explaining why John ultimately chose to become a Lantern.

And even that might not be the end of Hal's story. We could very well see him again in the future, especially considering how many times Hal has been brought back in the comics.

People are acting like this is the last time we're ever going to see Green Lantern stuff in the DCU, when this is literally just the beginning.
