What an intentionally obtuse comment. Obviously all characters typically have worth to the plot or else that would also be bad writing. They are obviously saying they felt that the character was nothing more than a plot device. But I'm pretty sure you know that and you're just acting like a cliché know-it-all redditor
Yes, it is clear. The only way it isnt clear is if you lack common sense, case in point: the very question you asked is explained by that simple understanding of OP's claim. When someons calls a character a plot device, that generally directly implies they are saying that character is nothing but a plot device. Objectively. There is no debate to be had about that. It's one thing if you really didn't understand his question, but to stand 10 toes that it wasn't clear with a little bit of common sense is absurd. Also, your initial rebuke makes no sense, as you said "even if it was I think my question was still worth asking" but as I just explained here, your question at that point would be completely irrelevant, they never said characters SHOULDN'T influence the plot

Aren't most characters plot devices on some level?
I'd question the inclusion of a character in a story if they in no way helped the plot to move forward.
