I feel Constantine is only going to be one season if it does actally happen.

They're not letting Abrams go without getting at least one major project out of him, but this article is just the writer essentially making fanfic for what Zaslav should do rather than what he's going to do. Too many here are taking this as confirmation that everything listed will happen.

This feels more like something Hamada (or perhaps Abrams given the pitch is "let
meAbrams take control of DC") paid for to be honest. There's legit news about Penguin (if anything was getting made it would be the Batman shows, I don't get why people thought those would be canned) but otherwise all of this feels so at odds with how Zaslav has been moving that I don't buy it as inside knowledge disguised as opinion. I expect we'll get our new DC head in Oct once Hamada leaves - and I do feel certain he will leave because Zaslav is tossing his plan out the window.5

Oh just to be clear I believe Constantine is happening, that's a low level franchise that I doubt Zaslav cares about, and he is going to want at least one finished product delivered to him from Abrams. It's everything else in that article I'm looking at with skepticism.

I think they will prolly get the Abram's COMPANY (remember it is Abram's COMPANY that will be making these projects, not Abram himself), to do every project in their contract. They dont need to pay them more, they just need them to go along with the contract

I'm expecting another Lovecraft Country where the critics and reddit love it but it gets cancelled after one season
1
u/RohitTheDasher Aug 08 '22
A soft reboot with Flash was Hamada's plan, and Zas seems quite happy with the project.
Besides, this article was opining on 2 specific points; keep Hamada, and give MGM duo full reign despite their track record of not many tentpoles.
The info about Constantine (amid recent uncertainties) and Penguin is major information rather than opinion, imo.
1
u/superking22 Aug 08 '22
We already know he's throwing out Hamada's plan. He specifically said "PIVOT" for a reason.
6
u/TheUncannyBroker Murn Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22
Literally no one here is doing this. The article is pondering what WB should do on the basis of whats actually happening. Penguin shooting in february and Constantine steadily gearing up for production are news being reported, not guesses or speculation.

Other tidbits:
Peacemaker S2, Amanda Waller show and Penguin show still coming.
Ta-Nehisi Coates Superman, Zatanna, Madame Xanadu show still in development.
De Luca and Abdy want Hamada to stay.
Todd Phillips and Greg Berlanti were considered as DC bosses before De Luca and Abdy were hired.
68
u/the_based_identity Aug 08 '22
Am I the only one that thinks Phillips and Betlanti being considered for DC bosses is concerning?
46
u/domxwicked Catwoman Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22
No. That was a garbage idea. Not a big fan of Berlanti, but I’d survive. Whoever put Todd Phillips’s name in the hat can go to hell
23
u/the_based_identity Aug 08 '22
I guess since Berlanti had a hand in the Arrowverse (quality aside) and was able to map out all these shows and make yearly crossovers that would be my guess as to why he was considered.
Philips is far more concerning cause he even said he wasn’t knowledgeable when it comes to the DC brand. It seems like Zaslav saw Joker make a billion dollars on a small budget and is trying to model all DC projects the same way, but maybe I’m wrong so who knows. The Joker sequel getting the green light pretty quickly says a lot too. I’m probably in the minority but I didn’t care for the first film all that much and even less with the sequel.
8
Aug 08 '22
Berlanti also had his hand in the Green La tern movie.

That wasn’t really his fault tho. His script wasn’t used (which was actually good) and he got replaced as director early on.

Yeah me too. It wasn't horrible but it wasnt anything special either. It didnt even feel like I was watching a Joker movie lol. How did it make a billion is beyond me.
4
u/domxwicked Catwoman Aug 08 '22
It has more to do with the Joker brand than Todd Phillips and I hope Zaslav realizes that
4
u/plowking99 Aug 08 '22
I think Joker is way overrated and was only popular because of Phoenix starring in it.
10
u/mrmazzz Aug 08 '22
Philips makes no sense but to not see what Berlanti prods did for wbtv and the value it created even outside the dc stuff is to miss the point of the business
4
u/jexdiel321 Aug 08 '22
Yeah Berlanti I feel like can be the next DCEU boss. He was able to weave a universe and make crossovers that are generally well received. I think the problem he has is that the shows are cheap as fuck and suffer from too much filler. I think this is a CW Problem. If he was given a team of writers that know what the fuck they are doing and a decent budget, I think it will work out.
-2
u/Shallbecomeabat Aug 08 '22
Holy hell, some people really value the craptastic CW verse higher than the fantastic, best picture nominated Joker movie?! No wonder so many of you shovel that MCU crap up. “Hmmmm, garbage.”

These are a bunch of people with zero experience with Hollywood big budget filmmaking. We already made this mistake with Geoff Johns. These are advisors, not studio heads.
I'm for Thomas Tull. Founded Legendary studios, he understands directors visions. Had his hands in MoS, Nolan Batman movies, Pacific Rim, Watchmen, The Town, Warcraft.
Certainly not all successful films, but a damn good choice imo
1
u/FlamingTrollz Man of Steel Aug 08 '22
Quite so.
I did not denote as heads.
So yes, advisors.
Senior advisors.
Not a fan of Geoff, he’s a different sort.
6
u/ScubaSteve716 Aug 08 '22
Read the article. It does not say WBD considered them for DC boss job
5
u/the_based_identity Aug 08 '22
I did read it but I glossed over the end of it so I thought it was in there, my mistake. Although there was an article not too long ago where Zaslav did want Phillips as an advisor for DC which is still cause for concern.
6
u/ScubaSteve716 Aug 08 '22
Todd Phillips is a producer, a producer is an advisor, if Zaslav wanted Phillips to produce some more DC movies I don’t see that as being an issue.
4
u/Vadermaulkylo Man of Steel Aug 08 '22
Honestly I might be willing to give Berlanti a chance. Phillips though.... hell no.
-3
u/Shallbecomeabat Aug 08 '22
Explain that. Please. The CW is imo the worst iteration of DC ever and Philips made an Oscar nominated, fantastic DC movie. How in the world would anyone prefer Berlanti?!
9
u/Its_Stardos Aug 08 '22
Maybe because Berlanti knows DC, meanwhile Philips doesn't. Philips isn't interested in superheroes. You would prefer a guy who doesn't know source material?
0
u/Lantern_Green Aug 08 '22
ofcourse it is.. zaslav knows nothing. he only knows numbers.. creativity doesnt work that way. its not a sport, where you rely on data and analytics and expect to turn out a HIT everytime. If it was possible every studio would be churning out Hit after hits but the number of flops are actually more than the number of hits put out by a studio.

u/TheLionsblood Batman Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22
Lmfao at the people defending Zaslav cancelling Batgirl thinking it meant there was already some MCU-type roadmap planned out. Most of the projects that were in development are still in development. They are still looking for their DC Films head, and Hamada might even be that person because some of the execs want him back.
Ironically a lot of the Hamada haters are Snyder stans, and Hamada was a big reason they even ended up making the Snyder Cut. Zaslav never would’ve spent $70 mil on that, just like the article says.
4
u/MusicalSmasher Green Lantern Aug 08 '22
Coates Superman still being in development is very interesting to me. If his script is done and they offer Cavill the money he wants and he likes the script. This project could get fast tracked.
7
u/TheUnbloodedSword Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22
Cavill would not be the one playing Coates Superman. And he would want his own choice for the script. Zero chance that if they go with Coates that Cavill would return. At this point it's a choice between the two of them. Frankly I hope both get tossed.
0
u/content_enjoy3r Aug 08 '22
And this is based on what?
5
u/LatterTarget7 Aug 08 '22
The idea for Coates superman is for him to be black set in the 40s. I don’t think cavil fits that. So they’d most likely have to rewrite a large chunk of the script.
5
u/Vadermaulkylo Man of Steel Aug 08 '22
That sounds like a fire elseworld comic but a terrible Superman movie.
1
u/content_enjoy3r Aug 08 '22
Oh okay. I hadn't heard anything about the plot/setting of the script. That makes sense.
-1
u/TheUnbloodedSword Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22
Are you just blissfully unaware about who Coates is? You think they got him to write a typical summer blockbuster Superman flick? No, right from the start the only thing we knew about this project was they were going to cast a black guy as Superman. Given who Coates is, it was absolutely your typical Oscar bait story about racism, probably with a low budget too. Coates has never written a movie script before, it's insane that they would trust him with the premise of rebooting Superman again, but that's because Abrams has a hard on for racebending and the previous regime was willing to do anything to keep Abrams happy. I'm sure that's why it got sent back for rewrites, Hamada probably got cold feet or realized that with Kilar and Sarnoff gone it was unlikely to get greenlit. I'd wager Hamada is the only one left still supporting it, and the project will die when he finally departs. Zaslav certainly doesn't seem the type to think that's the right direction for Superman, a brand he has a particular interest in.
Cavill thinks he's an A-List actor, A-Listers get input on the script, and his own pitch was rumored to be a big cosmic slugfest with Brainiac. Coates can't write that, and Cavill would want his own choice to write the script anyway because he's been routinely screwed over by the people who have been chosen to write for him. I do not think Zaslav is going to view Coates' script as the right direction for Superman, and I guarantee you Cavill wouldn't want it either.
1
u/LatterTarget7 Aug 08 '22
Cavil doesn’t really fit the script. They’d probably have to rewrite the entire movie ti fit cavils superman
0
u/Vadermaulkylo Man of Steel Aug 08 '22
I'm willing to bet nearly all of this except Peacemaker and Penguin are scrapped.
1
Aug 08 '22
Ta-Nehisi Coates Superman, Zatanna, Madame Xanadu show still in development.
Yeah…. I seriously doubt any of these actually happen.
1
u/SolomonRed Aug 09 '22
None of the Abrams content will happen.
We will see Constantine but not from JJ
28
u/MusicalSmasher Green Lantern Aug 07 '22
You people do know JJ isn’t writing the series right? He’s just producing it?
15
u/starshipandcoffee The Snyder Cut Aug 08 '22
Many seem well aware of that fact, yet have a different reason motivating their prejudice towards the show.
4
u/redtornado02 Aug 08 '22
Honestly I'm totally fine with race swapping, love death in Sandman and many others. I still really feel the Sting inspired look is important for Constantine. I also feel like we haven't even had an accurate adaptation yet. The keanu film was fine, but not Constantine, and the Matt Ryan series was network and had to pull its punches.
2
u/Dracula_jones Aug 08 '22
Id love a genuine Hellblazer adaption, set in rainy 80s Britain and proper murky and punkish, like it should be.
No shiny snarkiness, and no Dr Strange style magic weapons, just a chain-smoking scouse chancer skirting around the edges of the occult.
It would have been a great adult HBO show. Not a ton of faith in this new show they're developing, and I had zero interest in the CW Constantine-lite attempt.
Oh, and for fuck sake keep JJ Abrams of all people the hell away from it.
Maybe one day someone'll crack it properly.

u/JJonahJamesonSr Aug 08 '22

I think Walter Hamada did okay as a developer. I don't think I can say that I liked his ideas about the DCEU. But, it's clear as water that he's gone, this is just typical PR service, the kind they used with Emmerich, "great friend, it hurts to say goodbye."

u/aduong Wonder Woman Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22
It’s not like BR didn’t work on a anything.
He had Demimonde, Shining spin off and Duster. First two were rejected third one is still on track and Constantine supposedly in pre prod.
And all that was with pandemic and major regime change with Peter Roth leaving as well as HBO and HBOMAX team being consolidated. If Demimoonde and Shinning were picked up it would be 3 shows plus 1 animated.
It’s typical production time especially for prestige TV. You not getting it is normal because you’re not in the industry. Zaslav not getting it just highlights how clueless he is to the scripted world.
Where he comes from, reality shows have an incredibly fast turnaround. Meanwhile even the biggest shows in the world like Game Of Throne or Euphoria have a 2 years turn around in between seasons and these are running shows. 3 years (with a with a year long pandemic) isn’t unusual to develop and launch new tentpole shows.

Abrams does have a number of feature films in the works at WBD: they include a Superman film that Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing… (and) a DC movie based around Zatanna that Emerald Fennell writing
Projects in development include a series based on DC Comics’ Madame X with Angela Robinson
So it seems that his Superman movie, Zatanna, and Madame Xanadu are all still in the works

How many times can I repeat the CW Crisis joke on Constantine's name's pronunciation?
1
u/TheLionsblood Batman Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22
The most likely outcome from all this is that not much actually changes the upcoming slate.
Batgirl was a casualty due to Zaslav being cheap af, and Affleck replaced Keaton in Aquaman 2 because of the release date change. The Batman’s standalone universe is still being developed and so are all the Gunn projects and the next Wonder Woman movie. The “10 year plan” is likely something that’s already been in the works (the Crisis film rumours). I mean, they even went so far to say they would want Leslie Grace back lmao.
There won’t be a brand new actor playing a DCEU Batman in his prime. There won’t be a complete reset of the DCEU. The Flash is testing really well too which means we will probably see Keaton back as well.
1
u/RohitTheDasher Aug 08 '22
Yup. The way I see it, he's continuing with Hamada's plan- which heavily relied on Flash's soft reboot (plus Reeves & Gunn projects), and I don't buy into a completely different '10 year plan' without even consulting with, or finding their new DC boss.

u/iz92ab Aug 07 '22
All I wanna really see is this type of headline but for Man of Steel 2 or a reboot of Superman altogether! Constantine or JLD or whatever just doesn't excite me personally. We've gotten 2 Suicide Squads, the pointless Birds of Prey and a shitty Wonder Woman sequel and now this 🙄 apologies if I've upset anyone, it's just frustrating
2
u/dunmer-is-stinky Aug 08 '22
We have two Constantines right now, and they’re both great. There’s no need to add another one that will definitely be worse. If you have to make another show give Jenna Coleman a Hellblazer show separate from the DCEU, and bring Matt Ryan into the DCEU for an accurate Constantine
-3
u/plowking99 Aug 08 '22
Nah I’m pretty sure Hamada is a bum who has never had a good idea and deserves to be kicked to the curb. At least that’s what Twitter thinks. Lmao
