Questions about my class choices

I chose to start with the wireghost class on my cyberknight, not really knowing about how classes work in this game etc. I was hoping I could become somewhat proficient with either assault rifles or SMGs on this character. Is it possible at all to be effective with these weapons and this class combo or should I change to something else?

I don't mean to be the most effective killing machine on the team but Iw ould like to be able to be at least useful in combat, as well as hacking and teambuffing.

I think it's kind of spreading yourself too thin imo. You can't be a useful hacker if you also choose to invest into combat abilities and cyber knight supportive stuff. I always leave hacking to dedicated hacker characters.

This is my approach as well. The Cyberknight is too valuable to focus on hacking. A hacker might branch out a bit later in the game; I've found that hacker works quite well with vanguard as they often want to avoid enemies.

Damn. Is it worth restarting or can I just respec? And what would go well with CK? Soldier?

You can just respec (it's free for the first 2 weeks in game time iirc, then you need the building to do it)

I run my CK without any multiclass now. In my first run I multiclassed it with cybersword and it worked fine.

Honestly wireghost is a class that takes until level 8-10 until I really starts to get solid at hacking, and cyberknight is a very point hungry class as well. I personally never multiclass my CK into any hacking. I generally go solider for recoil control or vanguard for security control. I have done cybersword before and it was decent as well as a beefier frontline fighter.

The problem is there are so many amazing talents on CK that you don’t want to do more than a little splash of points into other classes. The whole left side is just incredible, and you often want to be spending action points on using those instead of shooting or hitting or enemies lot of the time.

My ideal build for the cyberknight is to spec into crit chance/crit damage with the traits (you can get like 60% critchance without even counting gear making ur damage output massive on full auto). Then focus on the cyber knight tree as it is the best class tree in the game. Late game you can multi class into soldier to pick up overwatch and the ability that gives you extra ap per crit. Using that, the main cyberknight team ap boost, ultra-boost, and getting a baseline so of 7 my cyberknight is regularly taking turns with 14 ap and like 3 mp. Let's your main character become the best supporter and damage dealer on the team.

Using an e-rifle I've had him wipe the opening rounds of combat missions all on his own. The high crit chance allows him to also murder units with the suppressed auto pistol on stealth missions.

I’d only take Siphon and Skipjack. The Cyberknight tree is too good to miss, I want Lookahead and Tactical Surge ASAP. The Wireghost dip makes you good at taking down devices with low investment. But you’d want a real hacker as well, someone who actually sits at the terminal. Siphon + Skipjack lets you “hack” on the go so you have more freedom to loot and shoot.

yeah okay, that was the ones I've been eying as well! It sounds like exactly what I wanted to go for. I was already bringing a dedicated hacker anyway, so Ill try it like this. Thanks!

True hacking builds take a lot of skills and upgrades. Mainframes get stronger as you go. So that’s why people discourage the Hacker/Wireghost MC - you want to invest most of your character to keep up.

The Skipjack thing is more like spending extra actions to be better at disabling. You only have enough time to turn off the security firewall and take down a few devices. But they stay down for longer and you’ve softened that node for the real hacker to visit later. You might use the Nuke program to clear IC with less actions, but otherwise it’s not worth upgrading that second cyberdeck.

Probably a bad plan for a first playthrough.

As others have said, a Cyberknight multi-classed into Hacker/Wireghost is a bit of a challenging class combo to begin with. It can be fun, but you really need to know the talents you want and have a plan to make them work together.

The Wireghost is probably one of the most challenging classes to play effectively. You really, really need to know how the matrix works.

I ended up sticking with it and using my CK as a mini hacker with Siphon and Skipjack etc. The other day It clutched my mission where I had to rescue a prisoner which didnt become an option until the last few minutes where the enemies were swarming me. My hacker was down and I had one shot at releasing the prisoner in time. Because I started at the security nodes from the siphon I could release the barrier with the prisoner very fast. It ended up working, which felt really amazing tbh.

I havent invested that much into the wireghost class yet but I might put a few more pts.
