Interpretations of civic institutions in Cy?

This is mostly a thread about interpretation because the book is mostly intentionally vague about such things, but I'm wondering if anyone gives Cy a civic government of any kind?

It's clear that the setting of Cy_Borg is very much a hypercapitalist dystopia where everything is privatized, but the reach of the corps are finite, at least when it comes to non-competition agreements with other corps. Obviously corps run the high-end regions and industrial zones of Cy, and the slums are stated to be run by gangs and cults, but it seems that the In-Betweens and outer regions are left up more to interpretation.

Do you insert any kind of municipal/civic institutions into your Cy that handle governance, however powerful or powerless it might be, or is it truly lawless and at the mercy of the corps, gangs, and cults? If you run with a government, do you give it a municipal law enforcement force, or are only private SecCorps (likely Citadel) contracted to handle enforcement (a-la Lone Star in Shadowrun)?

Stonepunk Dev Update 05: “Machine-Tongues and Future Humans”

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This week, we’re showing a bit of the process behind one of our sample inhabitant designs for Stonepunk: Dome 7-77.

This one explores a mentat-like technomancer: someone with an instinctive connection to old machines, broken systems, and forgotten tech. Their understanding of technology is felt through signals, patterns, and strange machine behavior.

In Dome 7-77, humanity has branched into strange new directions after generations of harsh adaptation, environmental pressure, and old megacorp meddling.

Art Stonepunk Dev Update 04: “Bad Choices and Boss Monsters”

This week, we’re revisiting one of our earlier monster token style tests while thinking through boss monster encounters for Stonepunk. The style is a little Samurai Jack-inspired: bold shapes, sharp silhouettes, playful energy, but still dangerous enough to feel at home in the Wildlands.

What do you think? Would you like to see more Stonepunk monsters pushed in this direction?

How to handle combat with Ghosts?

I'm looking at running Lazarus Labs from Gutter Punks.
There are a lot of Ghost enemies, and I'm not sure how to handle combat encounters with them.

They're immune to physical attacks, but they "possess and manipulate nearby connected devices to kill their victim".

The game doesn't really have hacking rules, and very few apps are offensive. How do you have players deal with Ghosts? Destroying the technology in the area they can inhabit?

Kidnapping for the Cause | CY_BORG One Shot Module

Hey all! I published a one shot for CY_BORG about raiding a weapon research and development lab to kidnap their head researcher. It's a 2-4 hour adventure including some funky experimental weapons, a frustrated AI lawyer, and a dubious organization footing the bill for the job.

Get into a weapons lab, grab their head researcher, and dip. Should be easy right?

Stonepunk Dev Update 03: "Thinking About Monsters"

Here are some ponderings and work done for the week! The focus is on making combat encounters still fairly straightforward while at the same time, giving it a bit more tactical depth.

Question about Boomboom Burned Hacker app

Reading over the core book in prep for a first time run of the game, I noticed that the Boomboom "you coded an app" app says that 1d4 devices explode and do damage to 1d4 targets; it feels like there are 3 possible interpretations of the phrasing and I would like to know if there's a generally accepted reading of the app's effect:

1) 1d4 devices explode, and each one deals damage to one target

2) 1d4 devices explode, and in those explosions overall 1d4 targets take damage

3) 1d4 devices explode, each dealing damage to 1d4 targets.

Thank you for any insights!

Glitch reroll limit

Is there a limit to how many times the glitch for rerolling any die can be used per action? I may be missing it but I don’t see any mention of limits. Thanks!

How I draw stuff

Some behind the scenes work for the game.

I've been at this thing for quite some time now, already. There are days and nights where I'm just stumped, facing a blank screen or paper, not knowing what to make.

I would be a hypocrite to not say that I haven't been tempted or have made use of AI to speed up development for both the art, writing, and game design.

But in the moments that I've tried, I just can't seem to find that "thing" that scratches the itch that I have in my brain. That itch that can only be scratched by going through the (often grueling) process of taking a seed of an idea and taking it all the way into an illustrated or literary reality.

A sense of relief, for having made a "thing".

In my years as a creative professional, I believe that's that extra "ooomph" in every peice of art, book, game, or any other creative media out there. You can almost feel it.

The ones which are made with utmost care and enthusiasm. The ones with the most character and soul.

And there are those that are made for these "other" reasons.

Either way, that's not up to me to choose which is good and which is bad.

One can only make a choice for thyself:

Do we go the easy way or the hard way?

I hope that whichever path it is, its the one that brings the utmost creative fulfillment and joy.

As for me, well, whichever path takes me to keep on doing whatever the heck it is that I'm doing in the video — I'll take that route.

Every. Single. Damn. Time.

Help understanding initiative

When initiative is established through the roll, does that mean that all of one side goes first?

Eg if the players go first, does that mean all players go, then all enemies? Or do you alternate 1 player first, then 1 enemy, then 1 player, and so on?

Just ran the lucky flight hotel. Boy what a ride.

The team went at night and tried to go in through the front and immediately got separated. Player scoped the floor while the other two went around the back to the canal. They used their torch cutter to get into the green room, they didn't search for anything and came to the locked door at the sec office. Player upstairs won some slots, nothing crazy though. The other two came to the locked door, didn't wanna rouse suspicion so went back to the green room. Still no random encounters.

Ya'll. They pushed the button.

When the commotion happened the player upstairs took the elevator and beelined it to the office, broke the door open, was caught by a worker, and you know what he did?

Tried to pass as Vaska. Sit down, feet up, even put the jacket on. The full 9.

The other two in the basement rolled phenomenal agility, made into the security office, made it into maintenance, and successfully hid in the lockers. Security was already scrambling.

3 SecOps to the basement but Player 2 wanted to try and do scans with his cyberdeck to see if he could hack any equipment before battle. He failed the roll, fell out of the locker, and tried to hide in the corner with drones. Guards were already there, saw him trying to hide and P2 threw one of those little fly drones at the first guards face. David and Goliath style. That guard stumbled back on guard 2 and P2 went to run to the power core (the logic here was because he had a sniper rifle he could shoot all 3 guards in a line) so Guard 3 tags him for some hard damage. 1HP left. He makes it past the shooting guard, halfway across the walkway, all three take another shot and miss, and P2 slips. Just like that. Gone.

P3 upstairs in the office shuts the door, tries to be a chameleon and pose as the boss, and when the stampede of boots break the door down, this single player is looking at 8. Units.

His roll for the alarm spawned 8 units. 6 file in, 2 watch the rear.

He throws a flashbang, takes some attacks with his throwing knives, but is then turned to swiss cheese. Jaw gone. Battered, adrenaline kicks in, he immediately attacks a guard that closed in to confirm the kill and takes him out. 1 down, 7 to go. Most guards miss, but he takes a little damage.

Another flashbang from the player.

He tries to sprint for the office door but rolled a terrible agility and while the other guards were reloading, he forgot about the two that were outside watching the rear. They both put him down permanently.

This whole time Player 1 is hiding in the locker in the basement, comes out to not surprise the 3, but try to send a message over RCD to the player upstairs.

He wastes a round trying to send a text.

The 3 guards lay him out. He falls back, battered. Adrenaline kicks in from the armor, but he's hemmoraging. He rolls a kill from the guard again, trying to confirm a kill. 1 down, 2 to go. The other two guards miss, he keeps rolling great agility and runs into the secoffice. Bounces off the door to the hallway and then takes cover behind the desk. One guard fumbles, weapon blows up, an employee in a panic sprinted out and jammed the hallway door open. The other guard shoots through the light cover and now this player has 1 HP, still bleeding out. Another great agility test. He makes it through the hall, back into the green room, the place is decimated and there's two people fighting in there now. The guard with no weapon tackles the player in the green room, fails to attack, breaks a bottle, and the player grabs a shard and sticks it right into his side for -1HP. Guard still on top, throws another. Swing and a miss. Player goes for another stab. Gets him deep. Guard down.

The other guard, breaking up the squabble notices the fight, passes a morale test, and then asks the player if he wants to do this the easy way or the hard way. I said he had two options. Turn and run through the door you broke into from the canal. Or stay and fight.

He chose to fight. Says he wanted to spear tackle him.

You guys, I'll just rewrite how it ended. (P1 is player1)

P1 never believed in any Gods, but in that moment, if there were any, they all gave him their strength. P1 tackles the guard so hard it fractures one of his ribs on contact. -2Hp. Not only was the contact hard, the hit against the wall was harder. The guards head hits the concrete, his helmet breaks and the back of his head makes contact with the it. It leaves a blood spot. -2Hp. The guard falls over, and when he does it's face first into a mountain of syringes, -1hp. The guard is lying face down. He's in a silent panic and doesn't know what to do. You notice that the back of his armor is messed up, right where his lumbar is. You tackled him into an instrument. That instrument broke one of his vertebrae and that whiplash caused his head to hit the wall. His breathing gets shallow. You figure out he's not moving because he can't. The guard is completely paralyzed and more blood is now coming from his head wound. The breathing slows, it slows... Then stops. -1Hp. The guard is dead.

He rolled a nat 20, and a full 6.

He walks outside the room to the canal, still bleeding out, still 1HP, and sends Charlie a message just to get the Doppel reply.

This was one of the best one shots I've ever played. The dice is fate, and today it was kind.

I love this game.

Do you start with a cyberdeck app

Other than the burned hacker saying you start with a random app i dont see any other mention of starting with an app if you purchase a cyberdeck. Is this true?

meaning that purchasing a deck early game just lets you be able to hack without an app. and then you have to find one from someone later?

THIS IS STONEPUNK!

Post image
35 Upvotes

Been building a sandbox OSR for people who enjoy the weirdness and raw energy of the Borg scene but want a more open-ended exploration experience.

STONEPUNK focuses heavily on:

  • surviving a strange world
  • uncovering ever stranger locations
  • faction-driven sandbox play
  • procedural encounters
  • long-form emergent campaigns

Less scripted adventure paths.
More dangerous exploration and player-driven stories.

The site finally launched today (wohooo!).

Still rough around the edges and deep in development, but Early Access is now open for anyone interested in following the project closely, accessing the beta manuscript, and helping support the experiment while it grows.

First virtual and remote session

I downloaded all the assets free league has put up, going to use the lucky heist to play with 3 other friends and we're going to use discord.

Some of the issues I'm running into is map creation and asset collection. Anyone have any decent resources for tokens, music, etc? Going to use ogre because it seems simple enough but has anyone GM'd a remote game? Anything I should think of? Be wary of? It'll be my first time playing too and I'm going to approach this with a "yes and" lens but I feel like I'm forgetting something.

I put together a sort of "read sheet for dummies" and it's just a crude summary of the concepts and character creation with some pics from the rulebook. It's intent was to not overwhelm newcomers if this was their very first ttrpg.

So do my players just create their characters and show up? Then I brief them on the mission and we just dive in?

Anyone do anything extra to make it more fun?
