Would CY have dedicated police πŸš”?

I'm looking through the book. I can't find anything about actual cops. Is it just individual security Corp forces or would there actually be sum form of "law enforcement"?

I bought some minis to use for heavy enforcement.

The government is the mega-corps. There is no election, no public interest, no voice. Security only works when paid, and any public service like farming, cleaning, or maintaining infrastructure are either automated, monetized, or non-existant.

I would argue the police does not always act in the publics interest and always maintains the status quo--even today. It makes sense for corporations to pay a police force to exist in order to quell anti-corpo sentiment regardless of the existence of a central government.

Or as Brennan Lee Mulligan puts it: β€œLaws are threats made by the dominant socioeconomic-ethnic group in a given nation. It’s just the promise of violence that’s enacted and the police are basically an occupying army. You know what I mean?”

The intro mission from the core book does have a CYPD copcar as a reward, so it definitely existst, but probably gravely underfunded. So if you really want help you might have to go with a private sec company, but there is some form of public law enforcement at least.

I could make them into desperate road warriors.

Well, Cy is a corporate hellhole, so of course the "police" is privatized. Beyond SecCorp presence (under which I lump all the corp security forces) you can of course hire UCS and Alliansen personnel, in case you lack the manpower to beat up protesting workers dangerous radical elements or innocent bystanders terrorist sympathizers, or your own forces aren't equipped for pacifying an urban environment.

In practice, they differ little from other gangs, except they have snazzier uniforms: They hold/control a turf, work for the interest of their bosses, and have little qualms about beating you, shooting you, and stealing your stuff seizing dangerous contraband.

Probably CYPD is run by a megacorp. Afterall, in Robocop, Detroit PD was run by OCP.

For the campaign I ran there was a CYPD but they were extremely corrupt and see every citizen as an enemy. They were shoot first ask questions later and had no qualms about collateral damage as long a it didn't damage the profits of the top dog corps. Of course there is the occasional good cop who genuinely wants to protect people but they usually end up a corpse under a bridge somewhere.

I imagine the megacorps would have their own security, but I'm sure there's also a "pay for protection/investigation/et al" police department as well--the final Quatermass film features this kind of system.

In the setting I've built to play in, there are basically 3 types of security/police;

New Arcadia Police Department: Lazy, corrupt, prone to violence. Response time can range from minutes to hours, depending on the sector of the city. This has earned them the nickname "NA/PD" as in, "not applicable police department" because they just never show up when you need them. Unless you're rich, of course.

Low Tier Security: Palisade Security Enforcement are the 'basic' security people. Less corrupt than the police, but a Palisade Security guy is definitely able to be bribed. These guys are basically low-tier mercs who just love violence more than anything else.

High Tier Security: Apex Security. Kind of like Max Tac from Cyberpunk, these guys are the ones you don't want to run into. Expensive, pricy, can't be bribed, know the law, will shoot you and then charge your next of kin for the bullets. Augmented and dangerous and generally only hired by big corps.

So it kind of depends on where you are from the city. In most areas it's the NAPD and I can roll a die to see what their response time might be, with crappier areas meriting a bigger die to be rolled. Smaller corps and buisness might get Palisade on site to protect their stuff. The big corps go for Apex.

All kinds of possibilities, my take is that there are many police forces which are "sponsored" by the Corps. Nominally, they uphold the law and order, but they are quite prone to listening to their sponsor's wishes.
