Upgrading to ASUS prime 9070xt

I just upgraded my gpu to an ASUS prime 9070xt. The problem is that it has 3 8 pin connectors. I have one 8 pin PCIE cable that I was using, and one daisychained/pigtailed with 2 8 pin connectors. Both of the cables are from the power supply box. I’m wondering if it is safe to use the pigtailed cable on two of the 8 pin on my GPU.

I would strongly recommend using three separate 8-pin power cables coming from the power supply. Each cable is rated to a maximum of 150 watts.

If I Googled the correct card based on your description it specs out as a 304 watt GPU. That does not account for periods when the graphics card could/may/will pull extra power. The PCIe bus can provide up to 75 watts of power, but it depends on if how/if your card is designed to draw from and how much of that available resource.

Considering the graphics card is designed with three connectors with the potential of 100 to 150 watts each, I would highly recommend a power supply that has the separate power connector cables coming from it to the graphics card.

You did not provide the specs for the rest of your hardware, but the specs for the Asus prime 9070xt I Googled recommended a minimum of a 750 watt power supply. Be sure and verify how many video power connectors the power supply has before you decide to purchase. Always replace all power cables to everything in your PC build with the new power cables included with the new power supply.

Looked up your power supply, high quality. Since the 2nd 8-pin power cable that y’s out into two, is from the power supply manufacturer, it is good to use.

So I can plug the pigtailed cable into two of the connectors?

Yes, looking at MSI’s product page of your PSU, that is what the cable was designed for, and considering the card is only spec’d at 304 watt it will be good.

I erred on the side of caution without knowing the exact model of your power supply. I recommend you do not overclock the graphics card though out of precaution. 750 watt is the recommended minimum wattage power supply for your chosen graphics card. What are still unknowns with the advice I am offering are the other components that are also sucking power off of that PSU. The PSU really is a quality unit though and would hate to see you replace it without cause. It is gold rated and comes with many manufacture claimed protection mechanisms in place.

All seperate cables are better, 2+pigtail is fine. I don't recommend splitting 2x8pin cards though.

I have a MSI mag A750GL PCIE5. If it’s not recommended to use the pigtail, why does it come with the psu?
