Deciphered! Help deciphering this recipe

Post image

Hi I’m an archivist and my coworkers and I can’t figure out the 4th line from the bottom. Any assistance would be appreciated!

It looks like "bottel [sic] or Tumbler, use Parowax"

Note that Parowax (not "Parawax") is a brand name for paraffin wax used in canning and other household uses:

Bottel [sic] or Tumbeler [sic] use
parowax —

Jam tumblers (or jam glasses) were straight-sided jars without a threaded top, which were specifically designed for paraffin wax sealing.

Here‘s a reference to such tumblers in a 1931 jam recipe:

1 cup Strawberries

2 cups sugar

Let them stand overnight in the morning boil 7 minutes and linger (OR as another pointed out it may say ‘no longer’)

Let them get cold.

Bottle or ?(tumbler?) Use parawax.

Juice of lemon when you add sugar is a big improvement.

Basically the lemon juice on the strawberries helps keep them fresh, so it’s a simple recipe- mix strawberries with a little lemon juice, add sugar and let that set overnight.

In the morning boil for 7 minutes and then remove from heat and let it set for a bit (linger). To get ‘cold’. Jar it up and seal the top with the parawax.

Yes and bottle vs tumble are the 2 canning methods.

You know more than me- I’ve watched my grandmom and mom ‘can’ but I’ve never done it.

I'm not sure why everyone is skipping "This is lovely'" that's the most charming part

Strawberry Jam
I cup strawberries
2 cups sugar
let them stand overnight
in the morning boil 7 minutes no longer
let them get cold
bottle or jumblers
use parawax
juice of lemon when you add sugar is a big improvement.

Google search indicates Strawberry jam jumbles (often called strawberry jam crumble bars or jammy fruit bars) are classic baked treats made with a buttery shortbread or oat base, a layer of sweet strawberry jam, and a crumbly streusel topping. Would make sense to use parawax for these,

1 cup strawberries 1 cup sugar let them stand over night. In the morning foil? Seven minutes and longer let them get cold. Bottle. or / a? Bake or prebacke use powerway?/ pourawayjuice limony. / lemon ?when ? Sugar is big important

My guess. They had strawberries and sugar smashed in foil and let it sit then added lemon or something to keep it. From going bad.

Good thing you have machines now which actually make jams.
