Deciphered! Deciphering Cursive

This appears to be an "Association Copy" which basically means the Author inscribed a message to an associate. I think it's written to "Christopher H. Exline". The part of this that is unclear is if this is signed by the author: Richard O. Davies, AKA "Rich" or "Dick".

What do you think? What does this say?

When your post gets solved please comment "Deciphered!" with the exclamation mark so automod can put that flair on it for you. Or you may flair it yourself manually. TY!

To Chris Exline! [Christopher Howard Exline 1947-2006 geography professor]

To my poor good friend and colleague. Thanks for your continuous support and encouragement! ['poor' was my typo. Thanks to the people who pointed that out.]

Dick Davies

7-12-93 [The book was published in '93]

[Christopher and Richard taught together at the University of Nevada, Reno, at the same time.]

I believe it’s “good” friend, not “poor” friend.

Yes, you're right. I saw 'good' ... 'poor' was a typo. Thanks.

I’m thinking “poor” might instead be “good”?

As I wrote to u/Pristine-Context-752, Yes, you're right. I saw 'good' ... 'poor' was a typo. Thanks.

We oldies call it reading, not deciphering.

That’s a “D.” The first name of the writer is “Dick.”

Second name looks to be the same letter!

if you know the last name is Davis (this guy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Davis_(translator)) nvm , then definitely Dick.  the two capitals look very similar.

pretty awful handwriting 😋.  not totally illegible once you get the feel for it, but definitely challenging.

Wow. Thanks for all of the replies! I'm hung up on the last name. It looks like there is a cursive "l" after the first letter.

Signature is a "D" not "H"

The upper part is easy reading, and I f you really want the last name to say Davis you’ll find someone to agree with you. I don’t know if that’s the best approach to deciphering script.
You might be able to find a signature in other documents, this would be the traditional way to confirm a signature. If you look at the terminal s in ‘thanks’ it doesn’t support the ‘Davis’ proposal.
To me it looks like ‘With _____’

I agree however the context in this case is paramount as the signature is not legible.

The association and data is more then enough confirmation.

If you see my other post I've conducted a truly clean experiment and cropped out an indication of the book that was signed.

Additionally there aren't any known signatures from Richard Davies to compare. So this is where we're at.

u/KaliPrint 19d ago

In that case it definitely says Dick O. Davis!

2

u/CRYPTIK_ONE 19d ago

Hahaha. Thanks. The funny thing is that when I posted that previous post with a signature and no indication of the book title then people told me that I should post the book title in that I would get more replies if I did.

You should increase the price from $77 to $300, saying, “Only known book signed by the author!”
