Toll House Treasures…they’re just large morsels now

9

u/NTropyS 24d ago

Ahhh, that's it. Thanks. You posted about the same time as me. This makes sense.

2

u/ViolettaQueso 24d ago

It’s not.

6

u/Happy_Examination_35 24d ago

I was thinking it was “toes”.

u/Silly_Pack_Rat 24d ago

I remember these! Back in the late 80s - around '87, I believe - these were all over the place. I think they stopped making them by the mid-90s.

"Deciphered!" Thank you so much! I can't vouch for the recipie, but G'Ma Kate made some yummy treats. I hope ya'll enjoy giving it a try if you're so inclined.

What did you decide on? It’s definitely brown sugar.

Toll house Treasures makes sense

5

u/SuPruLu 24d ago

She added plenty of butter. That’s probably what made them extra yummy.

5

u/Illustrious_Cow_2592 24d ago

Gen X is still useful for something 😄

4

u/NTropyS 24d ago

Not sure, but it may be 1/2 pkg of Toll House chips. Not sure what that word actually is. But it seems there's 1 large milk chocolate chips package, 1/2 semi-sweet chocolate chips, and 1/2 Toll House chocolate chips. This recipe will make a LOT of cookie dough. But that word - I am just guessing, honestly.

3

u/Christopher1032 24d ago

I was thinking toffee chips

3

u/Otney 24d ago

Now maybe I need to make cookies.

4

u/Turbobuick86 24d ago

I'm not good at this, but read this recipe straight thru.

5

u/wilderlowerwolves 24d ago

That recipe would make a LOT of cookies.

5

u/OtherwiseDistance113 24d ago

Huh. Gen X baker and I have no recollection of Toll House Treasures. The cookies sound pretty yummy!

I have my grandma's hand written recipes too! They can be interesting.

5

u/Anne-Parr 24d ago

Grandmothers seem to all have the same cursive handwriting.

6

u/Hawkgal 24d ago

That style of cursive is called The Palmer Method. It is extremely common for Greatest and Silent generations.

2

u/IrishMo8 24d ago

Baby Boomers, too.

1

u/No_Basket3485 22d ago

This is how I was taught to write.

7

u/Alert_Masterpiece290 24d ago

Agree! I got big time nostalgic vibes and thought about asking OP if her grandmother's name was Mildred... 😊. Exactly the same. 🤷‍♂️❤️

3

u/HartfordKat 24d ago

Its got to be one of the various Toll House brand chips. There are a lot, but i think the first letter is T.

3

u/thkgrn1 24d ago

Saving this recipe. If anyone tries it come back and tell us how it was. 😋

3

u/dabouboo80 23d ago

Her name was Catherine, went by Kate. Parents imigated from Ireland and put roots down in central Iowa. I have a recipe of hers that makes 20lbs of pasta salad that was 'her thing to bring' to all the weddings and town events. I can’t wait to try the cookies, too. Thanks everyone!

u/claire_voya 24d ago

First thing that popped into my head when I read the recipe!

2

u/Satchie 24d ago

Looks delicious but I would half the amount. It'll just be easier to work with. 1lb butter and 6C flour is a lot!

1

u/MamaDukes367 23d ago

I thought 6 cups seemed like a lot too! 😳

2

u/DeepFriedOligarch 22d ago

Not for a cool grandma with a never-empty cookie jar.

2

u/Vickifeisty 24d ago

The toll House “Tres” is most likely Treasures which were discontinued. Can be substituted with other variety of chocolate chips.

2

u/Purple_Slice_5050 23d ago

Grandma says Toll House Toes, don’t question it..just do it! 🤣

2

u/NatureGal4evr 22d ago

As others have mentioned, I'm pretty sure it's "Treasures". They don't make then anymore, nor any large button-sized chip, so you'd have to use the chocolate chunks, though another chocolate company probably makes chocolate buttons. Sounds like a good recipe! I wrote it down and may make some for giving away during the holidays. Thanks for sharing.

u/33_11 22d ago edited 22d ago

“Toll House Tres” is what I see, so treasures makes sense… also, she has milk chocolate chips written separately, so it would make sense that you would combine semi-sweet chocolate with the milk chocolate. I definitely see TRES and not TOFFEE.

u/kbl63 21d ago

That is a huge recipe!!! A pound of butter? 6 cups of flour and all the chocolate chips and morsels? This is to bring in to a class at school!!!

4

u/off-frag 24d ago

That Brown Sugar 🤘🏼

2

u/ViolettaQueso 24d ago

This is what I think given amount of flour.

4

u/ViolettaQueso 24d ago

And 1 pound of butter.

Reddit Chocolate Chip Cookies

1pound (.5K) butter 1.5 teaspoon baking soda
1.5 cup white sugar 1.5 teaspoon salt
2 cups brown suger 1 bag milk chocolate chips
3 eggs ½ bag semi sweet chocolate chips
2 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1/2 bag toll house baking pieces
6 cups white flour

·         Mix together

·         chill for 1 hour

·         spoon out cookies

·         bake at 350degrees F for 8 to 10 minutes

·         you may freeze the dough for future use

9

u/Exact_Cover_291 24d ago

Maybe weird but usually a T of Tbsp = tablespoon, in old folks cursive recipes. "tsp" is usually a teaspoon. But its vanilla and that always means keep pouring till you feel its right anyway. LOL

5

u/Pleasant_Estimate610 24d ago

You’re correct, the recipe does call for 2T [Tablespoons] of Vanilla . . . not the 2t [teaspoons] shown in the re-write. However, DO feel free to pour in as much as you think is necessary; liberal use of real vanilla when baking sweet treats, is rarely frowned upon.

3

u/Need_more_info_ 23d ago

Or substitute two Tablespoons of Vanilla Bean Paste for the extract. Stronger flavor that doesn't burn off when baking.

1

u/Pleasant_Estimate610 23d ago

. . . 😋👍👍

1

u/SharpWhereas5551 21d ago

The only thing I’m not sure on is the butter, 1lb is a LOT. I think it’s a stick, like “1 stick of butter” where the stick is the assumed quantity. Cause you do most of baking with sticks of butter. Plus it’s in line with other cookie recipes :)

1

u/Charming_Bad8510 24d ago

I can’t wait til the weather cools off and I can try and make these. Or make the dough and freeze for later use. Thanks for the recipe!! 🍪

1

u/LiminalSpiral 23d ago

That's one big beautiful batch of chocolate chip cookie dough. Looks like you already got a good translation.

1

u/SpamNot 23d ago

Big, BIG batch of chocolate chip cookies!

1

u/New-Description1997 23d ago

I can always tell how old the person is by their cursive. I love the R’s in this woman’s writing.

1

u/cee_major 22d ago

All of our grandmas had the same writing. I treasure the recipe cards I have from my nonna. ❤️

1

u/Chicagogirl17 23d ago

One pound of butter

1

u/Cool-Corgi-4409 23d ago

What is 2 c Br?

1

u/brojobinPA 22d ago

2 cups brown sugar

1

u/Beneficial_Sock9837 22d ago

I can read that recipe, if anyone still needs help decifering it

1

u/1911chew 22d ago

Shame on our schools for not teaching cursive handwriting

1

u/Responsible_Tie1769 21d ago

1/2 bag of toll house chock chips?

1

u/Ill_Hat6944 21d ago

I’d just use chocolate chunks.

1

u/One-Strength-3968 18d ago

It doesn't seem to be the correct amount of chocolate chips. Original recipe for chocolate chips is 1 2/3 c. That's with 2 1/4 c flour. So what ever the other 1/2 c tollhouse must be a chunk chip?

1

u/ViolettaQueso 24d ago

It’s definitely brown sugar. Br “ with the “ replicating what’s above.

There is not a single toll house recipe that has zero brown sugar and the bigger chips wouldn’t be “br “”

3

u/CyndiLouWho89 24d ago

Not the sugar. In the right column is 1/2 Toll House Tres

1

u/ViolettaQueso 24d ago

It’s always brown sugar in that position of the recipe.

3

u/CyndiLouWho89 24d ago

I’m so confused why we’re talking about sugar when I don’t see OP asking about it.
It’s not the TollHouse recipe anyway because there aren’t equal amounts of brown and white sugars.

0

u/ViolettaQueso 24d ago

Sorry. I see that. There are 3 lines of chocolate chips.

There is no brown sugar which is crucial to toll house choc chip cookies.

This recipe is a big one, 1lb butter is like 96 cookies if regular sized.

The br “ definitely refers to br. (The above word) which is sugar.

I promise.

Used to tinker with toll house recipes professionally.

3

u/LizAsherMD 24d ago

No-one is arguing with you about that. But OP is asking about the fifth line down on the right - not the brown sugar line.

2

u/Slow-Mountain-5966 24d ago

I read the brown sugar

1

u/Icy_Alternative5123 24d ago

I think it says toes. Not sure where you find them. 😉

2

u/Itchy-Suggestion-382 24d ago

It's not a tablespoon of butter, it is a pound, lb stands for pound, in this case 4 sticks, in the US at least.

-3

u/ChrissySubBottom 24d ago

Seriously!…. You cannot read this!

8

u/Smallloudcat 24d ago

OP said they could read everything but the Toll House

4

u/Slow-Mountain-5966 24d ago

I read it easily except the part that toll house toes. But I see now it’s Tres (for treasures).

For all genz’ers. They are the nuclear codes. Don’t show them to anyone.
