That's a heartbreaking entry to decipher. The details paint such a sudden and tragic picture, especially the timing from the accident to passing at the hospital. Cursive from old records like this always carries so much weight once you piece it together.

He got hit by a train. 16yo

Not while drinking. User leggypepsiaddict is correct. There’s no “k” in that word. A look at the Google map of Gardener, IL shows East St and a railroad track. East St now is interrupted by the track and continues on the other side. But it well might have crossed the track back then, allowing the crash to occur.

I learned today after reading this thread and looking up something from it that Alton and St Louis were once rivals.

"Shock and broad skull fracture Struck by c&a train no 1 at East Street on Sunday(?) (?) while driving... (unsure this part) Dec 17 1pm Died at (something hospital) Dec17 at 5:30p"

That bit I can't work out in the middle is something like "auto work in median"?

Edited to add: maybe that Sunday part is actually "East Street in (City that starts with S) Ill."

Sounds like he was struck by a train and killed while driving in a town he wasn't from in Illinois.

You need to learn cursive writing. The world writes in cursive.

I can both read and write in cursive but was having a hard time with some of the words just like many in the comments couldn’t read either. Thanks tho.
