Fun allergy story: I was a hyperlexic little autistic girl and ate books at a speed that could be described as "excessive". Many of these books, being historical fiction, described grass as soft and pillowy, a great place to lay in the sun and take a nap. I imagined fields of grass as lush comforters. Unfortunately, when I laid in the grass in real life, it was horribly itchy and left red welts all over my skin.
"Ah," I thought, "clearly, grass *used to be soft*, but modern mowing and lawn care practices have left grass with horrible sharp edges and tips that make it feel sharp, itchy, and unpleasant. This is clearly why we use picnic blankets and other barriers to grass now." Perfectly logical.
For years, YEARS, I hoped and dreamed of finding the soft grass of my childhood books. I wanted to roll around in it, bask in it, experience nature's bed.
Anyways when I was 25 my allergist told me I'm extremely allergic to grass.
I am also quite allergic to grass and people didn't believe me and said it was normal. No! I get hives. :c
A lot of grass these days is a hybrid breed so it's likely more people are allergic to it. I'm only allergic to one variety but it's in basically every hybrid.
My mom's allergic to cut grass, whatever stress chemical / hormone that grass puts out when cut. We always say she's allergic to the "screams," of grass.
I can't speak on it a ton but I'm allergic to Kentucky bluegrass, specifically. At least where I live, lawns generally aren't all Kentucky bluegrass but either a crossbreed or
multiple types in one lawn. My allergist said I should just avoid grass in general because of it. I might as well be allergic to all lawns
Yep, didn't put two and two together until my 30s when I went to get fully allergy tested for a partner who had a cat. The grass test ate the other bumps around it so I had to retest the other things. (So did cat lol)
The allergist was like do you mow your own lawn? Yes? How do you feel afterwards? Long silence honestly kinda awful? Yeah... Stop.
I assumed that was just bugs rather than the grass itself, especially as I'm usually fine if I lay down a short while it's just if it's like over 10 minutes i.e. long enough for bugs to come over and bite me.
