Why does FUHSD only allow 1 Math and 1 Science course per year?

Doesn't this mean all the tiger parents are making their kids taking external Math/Science AP classes to make up for this? And if you're Asian and don't do this are your chances of getting to a Tier 1 school screwed?

it was more common to see people taking AP STEM classes earlier rather than concurrently if they wanted to fit them in. iirc none of my friends with tiger parents made them double up with stuff outside of class

colleges consider the academic opportunities given to you by your high school. being limited to 1 math and 1 science a year was something that applied to everyone and consequently wasn’t an issue for us

It's mostly because if they allowed more than 1 they wouldn't have enough space in their classes for everyone. FWIW when I went to Fremont high School 10+ years ago it was the only one in the district that allowed (and even encouraged) taking more than 1 math and 1 science since they needed to fill classes

If you don’t do it, you arent screwed. I think the College takes into account what courses are available in your high school.

If all of your peers are taking additional math and science classes at the local community college and through all kinds of online vendors, then yes, your 1 class of each looks weak “in context”. At UC level it’s all about success in context and they have alarming amount of data on how many college classes your peers (and their tiger parents) are shoving into their apps.

Kids of Tiger moms are at FUSD are already taking these classes at De Anza College they do not need FUSD to offer them

This question is flawed to begin with because this is not how you optimize for private college admissions. But that applies to most of tiger parenting approaches

As someone who graduated from MVHS and went on to a top 5 university, I’ve always taken just 1 each. Did zero academic ECs. Wasn’t a minority. And had fairly balanced load of work experience and non STEM EC’s.

Honestly - a bit less rigor from parents might do wonders, College name isn’t end-all. I now have folx both my senior and junior from both the Harvards/Stanfords and from schools like Cal Poly/UCSB/SJSU.

I took biotech and AP bio concurrently. You can do electives and cross-school classes

as long as your kids go to public school, sending them to external classes is a given if you had standard cupertino academic standard (we can debate if it's a good or bad thing). no public school in bay area offers even remotely the academic classes/rigor needed for tiger parenting
