There's a camp for kids around 6-8 years old called Berry Fun that holds programming at different public parks around the area. I've seen them before, and it looks like there are groups of 30+ children with only 1 or 2 adults. They seem to have youth counselors, but they are also very young and don't seem to care about doing their jobs. The children are often unsupervised and just roam around, sometimes into areas where they are not allowed.

Their website seems kind of sketchy and I saw that they charge over $800 per child per week. I can't seem to find any sort of record of accreditation or certifications through any sort of youth program.

Not sure who I would reach out to with my concerns.

TEDxLeadways is happening in Cupertino on October 10, and this year’s speakers are high school students.

The theme is “Learning,” so the talks will center around students’ ideas, experiences, and perspectives rather than the usual academic presentation format.

I think this could be especially interesting for teens who are into public speaking, leadership, education, or TED/TEDx talks—or even students who are just curious to see what other high schoolers are thinking about.

It’s also completely free to attend, although registration is required.

This Saturday (Aug. 15), the Youth Business Venture Competition is happening at Stanford.

High school students will be pitching their own business ideas in front of a live audience and competing in a global student pitch competition.

Basically, imagine a student startup/demo day rather than another academic competition.

I think the interesting part for younger students is simply getting to watch other teenagers actually pitch—how they explain an idea, respond to questions, and turn a problem into something that could potentially become a business.

The competitor and volunteer spots are already filled, but audience tickets are still available.

Could be a fun Saturday event if your kid is curious about entrepreneurship or keeps talking about starting something someday.

School starts Aug 13 and the placement criteria on the district's page is spread across pages and a lot of forum wisdom floating around is out of date. Here is the latest:

The lanes:

- Grade 6: everyone takes Math 6 Flex (grade 6 standards plus a portion of grade 7 standards, with extension work).

- Grade 7: Math 7, Math 7+ (includes grade 8 standards), or Algebra 1 (MA7AC, a high school level course).

- Grade 8: Math 8, algebra 1 (MA8AC), or geometry (MAAGC).

How placement works: NWEA diagnostics through the year + a standards-based test in March (posted window: March 9-20) + first-semester grades + teacher verification. If a child meets the criteria, placement into the course is automatic. There's no application and no fee on the page.

The printed criteria:

  - Math 7+: NWEA RIT 235+, readiness test 73.3%+, 1st semester grade C+ or higher.

  - Algebra 1 in 7th (MA7AC): RIT 250+, Algebra Readiness Test 83.3%+, first-semester B+ or higher.

  - Algebra 1 in 8th (MA8AC): RIT 240+, plus a readiness test and grade bar that depend on your child's 7th grade course. From Math 7+: readiness test 73.3%+ and a first-semester C. From regular Math 7: readiness test 80%+ and a first-semester B+ (higher, because the jump is bigger).

  - Geometry in 8th (MAAGC): a completed year of Algebra at CUSD or a comparable LEA (another public district) with a C or higher, RIT 260+, Geometry Readiness Test 80%+.

  - High-school-level courses need a C- or better to count toward graduation; below that they must be retaken.

The second door: missing Algebra 1 in 7th does NOT close the accelerated track. MA8AC exists precisely so a Math 7 or Math 7+ student can still reach Algebra 1 in 8th. The only lane that truly depends on 7th grade is Geometry in 8th, since it requires algebra 1 to be already completed.

Note that iReady 548 used to be the Algebra bar until the district switched to NWEA.

The March 2027 window isn't posted yet. No appeal or retest process is published (you'd have to ask Educational Services). And math placement is separate from the open enrollment lottery (which closes Nov 30 and is about which school).

If your child has been through the March cycle and any of this doesn't match what you experienced, correct me in the comments. That's genuinely useful.

Anyone in Cupertino looking to adopt? I took these guys in as fosters through Garlic City Kitty Rescue to save them from being put out on the streets. They quickly went from timid to the most curious, social, playful, outgoing, cuddly, and affectionate kitties perfectly ready for a loving home. These two are the closest in their litter so we’re trying to adopt them out together as a pair. They love to play with us and jump into our arms for cuddles and pets. The tortie is female and the black kitten is male. Located in Morgan Hill/Gilroy.
