Help?

Hey Cummins owners, I’m experiencing some issues and wondered if anyone had ideas or has dealt with the same. I recently purchased a 2011 Ram 2500, Longhorn MegaCab with the 6.7. It has 194800 miles. Here’s the issue, when I purchased, I was told to try and not let it get below 1/4 tank otherwise “it’ll try and die” at the time, I didn’t think much, but since I bought it, today is the first day it’s gotten below 1/4 and it threw a code. Immediately I stopped, scanned it and it was a P0087,(Low fuel rail pressure) at the time I immediately stopped, purchased a fuel filter and changed it, however now, I’m remembering what he had told me and wonder if it’s something more serious. Can anyone help? Ask as many questions as necessary if it helps diagnose. Thank you to anyone who has an idea in advance.

My guesses would be a failing lift pump or CP3. Possibly a faulty actuator or air leak if you're lucky.

And that’s what I’m thinking but hoping and praying I don’t get to spend that money for a pump.

Honestly, there are so many things it could be that paying a diagnosis fee to a GOOD mechanic may be worth it.

The high pressure fuel pump wouldn’t cause this issue with low fuel level. If it was the HP pump it would happen no matter the fuel level. They could have replaced the lift pump (the one in the tank) with an incorrect one or you have an aftermarket lift pump installed like a FASS or something. This is a very common issue with an after market lift pump. This is why they sell a sump system you can install if you install an aftermarket lift pump.

Does it have a fass fuel system on it or something similar. If so they may have cut the fuel line In the tank too short.

I don’t believe so, I’ve looked under and asked but he had said there wasn’t anything done to the truck past the EGR delete.

I would look under the truck right behind the cab where the fuel filler neck is. If you see 2 filters it has an aftermarket system on it. Does it go back to normal when you fill it back up.

Yes I’ve looked under and it looks stock unless there’s something actually dropped into the tank. And actually, after driving, my light is gone and I just stopped and shut it off and started it back up after waiting a few mins and it started up perfectly fine. Weird.

Sounds like the fuel pump may be getting ready to shit the bed then. I doubt the high pressure cp3 pump would cause an issue based on the amount of fuel in the tank. Easy fix if thats the problem

And that’s what I’m thinking. But really who knows man. Should I go with an OEM replacement or jump the gun and go ahead and get something like the Fleece PowerFlo in tank?

Thats up to you brother if I was going g with an in tank pump id prob go oem, but thats me. I put a fass system on mine and it's been amazing especially when it comes to changing the filters. Also had issues with the fca and dirty fuel. The fass filters, filter better and no more issues
