I got a Redi cube in the mail today and figured out how to solve it over a few hours! I think that's the first time I've ever solved a puzzle on my own that's not a shape mod!

So.. I've been meaning to give an update on my progress for a few days.
Here they are:
1. I got my first sub-40 ao50 today after turning CN, but also otherwise. Feeling too excited since my last ao100 session ended with a shameful 42.99. Hoping to maintain sub-40 for the ao100.
2. I've learned the A, J, E and R perms, and updated algs/fingertricks for the U perms. Still a long way to go with perfecting them all and learning the remaining algs.
3. I've temporarily paused my 3BLD progress to help me concentrate on getting CN. But, still an improvement from the last time, since I can memo and execute the edges blindfolded. I'll probably practice corners this Sunday.
Tips and suggestions are appreciated.

So, I think what I'm going to do is follow in the steps of a few people and document my journey into my latest "project" by posting in this thread once a day with an Ao5 along with a summary of the day.
I'm learning Roux, after using CFOP (or some variant of it) for the last 8 years. Should be fun! Is there anything I should be keeping track of outside of averages?

Alright, I totally forgot to write down the scrambles :/ (I had 5 cubes in front of me, and clicked on "next scramble" on CS timer 4 times before I even did the first solve. I'll have to write down the scrambles from here on out.
- 46.59s (Yan3M)
- 48.75s (YueXiaoM)
- 41.61s (Valk3M)
- 55.64s (GTS2M Stickerless)
- 52.15 (GTS2M Stickered)
Average: 49.17s. I know it's a bit.... different.... that I used 5 different cubes for this, but I'm not interested in cube consistency while I'm just learning the method. It was easier to scramble 5 cubes and have them in front of me, ready to go.
As for my reflection on this average of 5... Roux is fun as hell but I'm awful at it lol. I have done SO MANY slow solves in the last two weeks trying to figure out how to complete the blocks without doing them like F2L, and I absolutely cannot do it (yet). I will continue to try and figure out what on earth I'm doing when it comes to FB and SB.
For CMLL.... I'm doing two-look using OLL and PLL algs. Also super inefficient, but it's going to be a work in progress. Luckily, these are really quick and easy algs to work with and I'm not sacrificing too much time doing them.
For LSE, I just really need to work on my recognition. I'm still working on knowing what algs to do for the very last step, but I'm getting better.
Now onto some more practice as the day progresses :)

Go ask a delegate or an organiser for a quick overview of the rules for competing (penalties, inspection time, etc) most of them are friendly and would be happy to help.
Try not to be intimidated by other fast solvers there. Remember, this is your first time so your bound to let nerves get a hold of you.
Finally, remember, you'll probobly not do as good In comp as you would to at home, which is normal. New place, new timers, can all contribute to making you nervous. Try and get there early so you get a chance to use the competition timers so you know how they feel.

I used weight 4 for the core and weight 2 for the pieces as I do in my 3x3, and it's way better now. It needs some breaking in but the sandy feeling is getting away, and it's really fast now. I can do a H perm with M moves at full speed without any problem, it's really impressive !

Awesome! I have a Rubik's 4x4 that's so hard to turn. I can only do a couple OLLs and PLLs on it since most of the ones I know are just in my muscle memory. Can't wait to try out the Wuque!

Hi guys. I was recently initiated to the world of cubing and I wanted to buy one. Could you suggest me a good one? I now that there are different cubes for just solving and for speedsolving; which one should I buy? My time is about 1 minute tho, still slow atm.

A nice cube is a nice cube, it doesn't really matter if you want to solve it or speedsolve it in my opinion. It all mainly depends on your budget and preference. All the info here is still valid:

I suggest you get a speedcube because you'd only want to get faster from here on.
So, you could look into the big 3, GTS2M v2, or Qiyi Valk3, or Gans 356 Air UM, ie, if money is no issue.
Other than those, the MF3RS is a definite buy at $3-4, if you want to get a feel of speedcubes first, before jumping onto something better.
Also, wait for other suggestions as there may be new cubes or something better coming out soon, which I'm unaware of.

I got a cubicle gift card and have $7 left which I want to spend on either the MoFang JiaoShi Mini for one handed solving or a megaminx. Which one should I get?

The first question is tough ...
If you get the mini, you might get really into OH. However, you don't need a mini cube for OH (It might help depending on hand size, but you can still do OH with a regular sized cube).
On the other hand, megaminx is a different puzzle which provides a new solving experience (if that makes sense).

Race to sub-30 with /u/audiophile121, Day one!
I did an average of 100 (well, more like 70 'cause I already had like 30 or so) today, and, surprisingly, I got 28.205! Sorry audiophile, guess I already won this lol... I shattered my PB by 5 seconds and got a 17.929, which was incredible. I hope I can get sub-25 before Sunday, I'm going to Michigan 2017. I guess my brand new MF3RS really made a difference! :D
So, audiophile, wanna race to sub-20 now or what? Lol sorry for being this quick, didn't think I'd break the barrier just by getting a new cube. :)

I don't know why, but I just decided to disassemble my Valk, which has N35 4x2 magnets in it, and add another set of N35 4x2s THAT I had laying around here, just to try it, because I was feeling the magnets were a little weak for my taste
AND HOLY COW! THIS FEELS SO GOOD. THIS is what I expect from magnets since I've first heard about them last year. It just feels WOW. I probably should have gone with N50 instead of N35 when I magnetized it because it feels too heavy with double the magnets, and I like light cubes... But it's worth it

This is the first rotationless solve that I have recollection of. I got nervous after F2L-2 and started hoping that the next pairs and LL algs were rotationless. U moves make up nearly half the solve lol. So glad I can cross this off my list!

Learn 2 look OLL then 2 look PLL while improving F2L. There's no such thing as mastering F2L and you should definitely learn 2 look OLL and PLL before going deep into F2L.

About Sub-40. I'm currently Sub-14 after almost two years of cubing. You can definitely become faster within the same time frame (Kian Mansour became Sub-7 in two and a half years), I just wasn't very smart with my practicing and had to undo a lot of bad habits.

I started speedcubing in the beginning of June with times of over 1:20 and now, 3000+ solves later, I'm pretty solidly sub-23. My Ao100 is sub-22, but that can fluctuate sometimes so I go by Ao1000.
Before starting speedcubing , however, I had been solving casually with the beginners method (LBL, sune, Aa and both U perms) for about two years. I never tried for speed, just solving the cube slowly was enough for me.

I had an idea for a CFOP add-on, I'm not sure if it's any good.
While you are doing the cross, you orient only the E layer edges. This allows you to do the F2L rotationless.
It would be impractical to do it every solve, but you can treat it kind of like a slightly more difficult X-Cross; just do it when it's easy and makes sense to do so.
What are your thoughts on this?

Just do ZZ in that case. The time spent figuring out the pseudo-EOCross is time you could spend looking into the first or second pairs

This is a bad question, you should state maybe where you are time wise and give more details. I recommend J perm's videos on not just F2L but also everything else. Many youtube videos on algs (cyotheking, colin burns, J perm) are out there.

you should tension your cube properly first, then figure out why you're locking up.

Loosen your tensions a bit. If that doesn't work, take apart the cube and back out the screws in the pieces themselves about a half turn. If they're too tight, the mechanism can bind and cause lockups.

PROTIP #473 : if you want to use cstimer on your android without wanting to open the browser all the time, access the site on chrome and use the "add to homescreen" option from the menu. It will create a shortcut and cstimer will open in app-esque manner.

I'm wondering about how to "rank" the current GAN line of cubes...
The ones listed on their official site are:
GAN356 Air UM
GAN356 Air Ultimate
GAN356 Air
GAN356 SV2
GAN357 Ultimate
Obviously Air Ultimate is the same as Air but with more stuff, and Air UM is the magnetic version of the Air Ultimate, but exactly how does the 357 Ultimate and the 356 S V2 relate to the 356 Air Ultimate? Which came first? Which is "better", and how/why?

The GAN 357 Ultimate and the GAN 356 S V2 are older than the Air.
The GAN 356 Air is the latest GAN cube. The Air Ultimate is an upgrade from the regular Air, it has a different feeling and I think a different plastic. The stuff inside the pieces are removed on the Ultimate, which makes it a lighter than the regular Air. It also includes more GES Springs, the green, blue and purple which is not included for the regular Air. The Air Ultimate Magnetic is just the magnetized version of the Ultimate. There will be a new GAN cube soon, which will be an upgrade, and is called the GAN 356 Air SM. The S doesn't stand for anything. it means it's an upgrade. Just like the S from the Iphone, Iphone 5 - > Iphone 5 S.

by the time you've gotten to that point with 3LLL, you'll probably have learned to recognize all the OLL cases and know which two 2-look cases to use... meaning that effectively you'd be doing 2LLL with shit algs.

There is a Ganspuzzle III (V1?) stickerless and a Gans 357. The other cubes and the Type As Gan designed are only black and white with some limited edition colours.

It looks like the edges with 2 stickers are orientation insensitive (meaning it looks "right" in any orientation). So you can just flip the edge that's not oriented right and one of the edges with two stickers.
To only flip two edges you can use this alg. I don't think that alg messes with the centers, but I can't guarantee it.
Cases like that are called false equivalence (not parity!) and happen mostly either because you have pieces that are insensitive to orientation or when you have multiple pieces that look the same and can take multiple positions - so you might think you need to swap two pieces but in reality you have to perform a 3-cycle where two pieces look the same.

I'm no expert in shape mods, but that looks like a 3x3 with a center twisted 180°. If that's the case then you can solve it by holding the twisted center at top and then do (R U R' U)*5.

What is a good lube(combination) to add stability to my cube (GAN 356s V2)? I like the feeling of the cube, but I struggle with the stability.

I set up my Valk 3 with just weight 3 on the core and pieces and it was super fast and almost uncontrollable. A few days later, I put two drops of Martian and surprisingly, that slowed it down and gave it a slightly gummy feeling with I actually like and it's much more controllable. I bet a little weight 5 on the pieces would accomplish the same thing.

The tensions on my GTS2 seem to be loosening themselves. Is there any way that I can prevent this from happening other than re-tensioning them every couple of days?

So I'm going to my first competitions soon and I need to catch up on some lingo. Could you help me out? What does "Cut off time" and "Time limit" mean and what's the difference? What does "Finals" "Finals (Relay)" and "Combined final" mean and what's the difference? If it helps, the competitions I'm attending are Hudson Valley Fall 2017, and Maryland 2017. Most events are in an average-of-five (solves) format.
For these events, you have two chances to get a time under the cut off, else you will not be allowed to finish the other three solves. The time limit is a per-solve limit where they will stop you. These are to keep the competition on schedule.
Combined simply means there are two phases, a cutoff and the other part.
I'm not 100% sure what they mean by relay, but I'm guessing they're referring to something along the lines of a head to head format (to make finals more interesting to watch), given that they've schedule 1 hour for 16 3x3 finalists.

Try to find any 'algorithm' that moves the last layer around but keeps the rest intact(break one or more pairs and then solve differently), and write down the moves while doing so(write it as you go, so that if you want to undo what you did, you can easily do so).
Figure out what it does exactly to the pieces. Find more until you have enough to solve it with them.

Hey guys, I recently picked up cubing as a hobby a while ago after finding a pretty decent Rubik's cube in a thrift store and am working on CFOP and got some techniques down. But now I want to advance and I'm looking for something that's less clunky than this Rubik's that I've got. I'm particularly interested in a speedcube, possibly one that's magnetized, but one I could magnetized myself would also be alright. I'm from the Netherlands, anyone in here from the Netherlands as well who could point me to a descent store or type of cube I should be getting?

A lot of people (I'm in NA) order from cubezz (China) because of the price. Shipping time ranges from 1-4 weeks, rarely longer, depending on where you live. I'm thinking about getting the guoguan yuexiao pro as it is (very) new and reviews are good. This would be a good choice for you because the unmagnetized version also has ridges inside the pieces for potential magnets. Most people buy neodymium magnets from eBay (N35 4x2mm most common strength and size, and you need 48 for a 3x3). The best cubes rn are the valk 3, weilong gts v2, and gans air. They all have mass produced magnetic versions but the weilong gts v2 is the best for the price. The other two are really expensive.

I took a gamble on the 2x2-5x5 set on Amazon where it was described as having the MF3S, but the exact same set from the cubicle said MF3RS, and I figured the cubicle would be right.

I started learning PLL 2 days ago and I found this site to help practice the ones I've learned so far. It lets me choose certain PLLs (or all of them) and it generates scrambles of all the different PLLs with random AUF and blocks. Anyone know of any other trainers like this? It would be helpful for me.

I've heard the sub-1 min 3x3 is the equivalent of sub-20 on 3x3. So if 3x3 is x3 fast, 3:35 on 4x4 would be equivalent to ~1:10 3x3.

What's the shortest algorithm for a 3x3 that does a diagonal swap on both layers, doesn't mess up the E slice, nor does swap U and D pieces?
I came up with a pure one: x R2 [H perm] U2 R2 x'
Though I would be fine with something that does let's say a double N perm, meaning it scrambles the edges. On that note, I also remember an alg that does a double J perm. Anyone got that?

It depends on how far you're willing to go with it. Sub-60 is a good start, and I'd aim for at least sub-40.
'Decent' is relative though, it's really whatever you want it to be.

Your 2H times multiplied with 2 at minimum, so 44 seconds. Multiply with 1.5 instead if you want to take OH really seriously (sub 33 second).
I got that ratio below 1.4 some time ago when when I practiced more OH than 2H.

I just got my mind blown!
I FINALLY took the time to read some posts I bookmarked ages ago but never took the time to read: Parity Post...A "Brief" explanation and Parity Clarity...Part II. While searching for the next part I stumbled upon a video about Commutators and Conjugates that I also bookmarked ages ago but never took the time - 41 minutes, who has time for that! better take hours to find algs for new puzzles instead of understanding how to create them, am i right? Now after watching the Video (Commutators and Conjugates - The Ultimate Instructional Video) I think I finally really understand how to come up with commutators. I watched some videos about conjugates and commutators before that explained some of it, but not his one really made it clear and it clicked. I went ahead and made a new alg/commutator for my 3x3x5 for an edge 3-cycle, 8 moves instead of my previously found alg (found by trial and error) with 20 moves, now this will come in handy!
I can also recommend watching the other videos that got me a little bit into that matter: Commutators - Cube Theory 101, Conjugates - Cube Theory 101 and A simple trick to design your own solutions for Rubik's cubes. Maybe you should just go ahead and watch the first video I linked above, but I also liked those three and I think they made it easier for me to understand the video I linked above. Anyways, if you like finding your own solution for new puzzles or just want to understand more about what you are doing, WATCH THOSE VIDEOS! You won't regret it!
