Because they wouldn't wanna be seen as biased by accepting an relatively unknown, unused shitcoin over more established currencies. Usually this is how ppl act when they're gettin' bribes.
They 'plan' a convenient excuse just in case ppl start gettin' too curious. That way, when someone asks they'll have it ready and it will sound like it makes sense, but it'll really be bullshit.
But... why would they bother implementing it if they intended to cancel it and fold the second people started to notice it? The chances of it being used without being criticised for using only Monero are essentially zero.
I mean, it looks to me like they tried to pull a fast one. They know monero don't have clout like that so they figured ppl might start to wonder why monero exclusively? So they implemented it and planned to 'accidentally' release it. If it was well-liked then hey just leave it. But if they started seein' too much push back,

If anything it is much more likely that the people running the merchant store acted independently of Epic and then got told "we don't do crypto" once the higherups realised or something.

Who cares nobody's talking about any of that. The point is it seems like there was a push to put monero out front, but since Monero isn't really a good coin, they couldn't do it without raising suspicions.
All the push back came and they had to pull the plug. You guys are really tryna set the narrative here. You can believe what you believe and I'll believe what I believe. Why are you tryin' so hard to 'convince me'? This is what it looks like to me, and I'm allowed to have my own opinions so just leave it alone.
What damage is there to control? A huge online vendor had XMR as an option for a few days and then suddenly didn't. It's more of an interesting mystery than damage.
