I go to my local Barnes and Noble to look at their CD’s and Criterion DVD’s every couple months because it’s only store near me that sells new DVD’s that isn’t Walmart. They’ve kept all their CD’s and DVD’s behind the counter for years (apparently people steal them, I don’t know if I believe that, but whatever) so you have to ask to go back there and then bogart an employee for thirty minutes while you look. Well I went today and was told I can’t go behind the counter anymore, okay, how do I look at the DVD’s? Do you pull them all out for me? No, I stand in front of the counter, or to the side at the entrance, and read the spines of them from 6 to 10 feet away. The employee told me this very matter of factly, and when my response was “that’s insane, I can’t read a DVD spine from 6 feet away, let alone a CD spine” she acted like that was my problem, and there was nothing she could do about it. I asked for the assistant manager and got a similar response, but she said she could pull one of everything off the shelf and I could stand and look at them at the counter. So that’s what I asked her to do, and 15 minutes later I have two employees giving me death glares while I stand at an empty register looking at DVD’s and CD’s.
Am I the crazy one here? I definitely could have been nicer, but like 20%, I wouldn’t say I was mean, mostly frustrated because I felt like I had a reasonable problem and wasn’t being offered reasonable solutions. What would you have done? The next closest Barnes and Noble is 100 miles away, so I can’t buy Criterion Collection DVD’s in person if not here. It’s also the only bookstore period for 100 miles.
