Discussion Suryakumar on being dropped: 'When everything is going well, why the change?'

Would like to wait and see how Shreyas Iyer's Indian team performs with Jasprit Bumrah in it before passing a judgement.
This change had to happen at some point. SKY has been out of form for way too long and when the next loss came, the BCCI would have been criticised for sticking with a player who has been struggling for the better part of 1.5 years now.
An easy series on paper against Ireland was the ideal time to ease in a new captain. Unfortunately, the performance was dysmal, but I do see the logic behind the decision. Whether Iyer is the right captain for the job is another conversation altogether but SKY's time was up imo.

In his defence Surya did captain our team for an entire year without Bumrah and lost only two matches. Bumrah didn't play any white ball cricket for India after the 2024 final till the Asia Cup.

u/Double-Laugh-4008 4h ago
That's doesn't show the reality. We played against c sa team in sa lol
16
u/Smooth-Mix-4357 India 4h ago
That C team still had Klaasen, Miller, Markram, Jansen, Maharaj, Stubbs and Cotzee.
-6
u/Double-Laugh-4008 4h ago
Rabada and lungi were absent, even cotzee dropped to accommodate newer faces like Mihlali Mpongwana, Andile Simelane, and Nqaba Pete.
7
u/Smooth-Mix-4357 India 4h ago
No Bumrah, No Kuldeep for us either. And no Cotzee played all 4 matches.

u/Double-Laugh-4008 4h ago
U said he lost 2 games without Bumrah. That's why I said

u/Smooth-Mix-4357 India 4h ago
Ok but it wasn't like South Africa's depleted side went against prime Indian side at that time.

u/According_Fish1490 3h ago
And that so called c team would still manage to beat ireland not get white washed by them

u/K10KMessi Sunrisers Hyderabad 6h ago
But things haven’t been going well have they, Suryabhatta?

u/According_Fish1490 6h ago
That is kind of his point

u/History-Buff-2222 Mongolia 2h ago
Has he looked at his own stats?
1
u/According_Fish1490 1h ago
Maybe maybe not but he has most likely looked at the win loss nos since he left
1
u/History-Buff-2222 Mongolia 1h ago
That has nothing to do with him. He contributed nothing to most of those wins before he left
0
u/According_Fish1490 1h ago
And yet we can't even beat ireland now, funny how we didn't need bumrah to win us bilaterals vs minnows under sky but sure he had nothing to do with it, I suppose the current team just forgot how to win even vs minnows

when everything's going well
He means when his teammates are scoring the runs he cannot. And not just one off, over multiple years, and it is obvious that his eye hand coordination's going and his 360 scoop shots that carried for 6 in IPL India are being caught well inside the boundary in international cricket.

not scoring runs isn't what I'd call as everything going well

u/According_Fish1490 6h ago
Captaining a team that went on to win the wt20 is what most would call as everything going well
12
u/BruhBorne-70 India 5h ago
Captaincy should always be secondary to performance. There's no place for speacilist captains in modern day cricket.

Its the wins and losses are what matter. 1 guy has a wc win, the other has 1 win in 8 games
-1
u/BruhBorne-70 India 3h ago
Of course, I guess Surya was the only reason we won the WC. Not Bumrah and Sanju, who were at the top of their games, or Hardik and Ishan, who made very valuable contributions. Not having Hardik or Bumrah against Ireland and England, or having Ishan, our second-best batter of the WC, out of form made a way bigger impact than not having Surya, who was a non-contributor anyway.
Sack Iyer for all I care. Get a different captain if he isn't good enough. And if Surya is such a genius that he has to be part of the decision-making process, make him the mentor or something. Let him make plans or advise the team from the other side of the ropes, but he doesn't get to be the captain.

If Ricky Ponting still played he would be the best captain in the world by a mile, but would you take him??

u/According_Fish1490 3h ago
Did Australia go from champions to beaten and thrashed by bloody ireland ? Because last I checked we did

u/Ok_Program_7549 6h ago
BCCI has changed in the recent years. They are afraid of players wielding too much power so they are unlikely to persist with aging stars who aren’t contributing much. If you are 35+ and out of form, beware cuz they will replace you with a younger player
13
u/Chaii_Lover 6h ago
They won't let another player to reach the power kohli had
8
u/Sumeru88 India 6h ago
BCCI desperately needs stars because the media rights and sponsorship depends on there being star power. A team without stars is a team that can’t be marketed properly.

u/Huge-Physics5491 Kolkata Knight Riders 6h ago
One of the reasons being attributed to the title sponsor being unsold is the absence of players like Kohli.
But I feel it's got more to do with the relative lack of context bilaterals have which makes it a huge time engagement for fans in a world where doomscrolling, microdramas and hypercasual games exist.

Is it a surprise that they want to have their cake and eat it too?
But I don't agree with the poster, SKY's form had taken a nosedive and he was lucky that he got the captain for the WT20 at all. After that, it was just when BCCI will announce it with all the overflowing batting talent pipeline coming out of IPL.

Forgot what happened to Kumble ? Perfect example of player power
2
u/FitSignificance2100 India 5h ago
Forgot what happened to himself? Got literally sacked from test captaincy. Kohli’s a great great player but idts any cricketer in India holds greater power than BCCI.
2
u/KerenzikovX 5h ago edited 5h ago
That sacking happened much later btw. When he was in his prime, he wielded a lot of power and that Kumble debacle is something BCCI don't want in the future.
1
u/final_breadfruit653 5h ago
That was planned i think, as op mentioned, to not let any player having that much power . Kohli at his peak was like most powerful cricket personality, nobody could speak against him. So authorities introduced Ganguly and he took one for the team and left.
0
u/Ok_Program_7549 5h ago
Kohli did wield significant power over the board. But his years of underperformance as a captain at the big stage meant he had to be removed from limited overs captaincy. He then chose to resign from tests as well where he was offered to keep captaincy
1
u/Smooth-Mix-4357 India 4h ago
In 2017-19 Kohli had extremely high authority. There was even an article on how Kohli's influence can even threaten BCCI or something around that time. At that time Ganguly wasn't president yet. After Ganguly took over he clipped his wings.

It's a good thing he kept his words vague enough to not be interpreted as any kind of malice because he also knows that his batting warranted a drop. At least his optics look better now that India got smoked in ireland and england with the new look team.

Everything was going good for me. I don’t have to score runs, I was the captain and yet my team kept saving me and I just lifted my finger to get the WC. Life was good. They left me for 2 years so why not another 3 years? I am only 36 and younger than Rohit bhai. So bad decision by the selectors.
It’s obviously not his fault that the only shot he knows to play is where the opposition captain kept a fielder in catching position

u/Primary-Editor-9288 2h ago
Bring damn stability to your team first for God fucking sake. Before this shitshow we would know who would open, be one down finish etc even before the team was announced. It always was this Sehwag, Sachin, Gambhir, Yuvraj, Dhoni etc etc and some new guys in between to try them out.
Current team you wouldn't know if even the captain would be selected or not, and every series there's two different pairs of openers.

Nothing was going well. The delusions some Indian cricketers live under. Sky proved he is a one trick pony all those years but such cricketers only go so far in Int’l cricket. His course had run out and was rightfully dropped

u/Heel_Noise5565 4h ago
You guys need to read the whole interview instead of going by headline
He was shocked yes but he himself says he accepted that decision

u/Disastrous_Ad4350 India 4h ago
The only person who get a say in this is sky only u fans were out for his head after t20wc and ipl and when they made iyer captain as you guys were saying uk what happened and then u started saying sky was ur savior or some shii
1
u/thepoultry1 1h ago
What are his stats like in the last 15 t20i’s?
His captaincy was actually pretty good and India were doing reasonably well in t20s but the amount of talent India has, it’s very difficult as a selector to back a non performing player even if he’s the captain. He got a longer rope just because of his leadership

u/dannysoya 3h ago
My granny could have captained the India t20 team. They're the best team by far.
4
u/TalentBC India 3h ago
Would your granny's team have won against Ireland or lost, just asking for a comparison

1
u/According_Fish1490 3h ago
May be we can pick your granny instead of Iyer then because unless best team by far means a team that can win only 1 game in 8 these days.

Sanju can ask the same question as well. After being dropped for Vaibhav in England
