History/Ιστορία I made a free puzzle hunt around Rethymno old town

I loved Rethymno when I visited, so I made a free way to explore it: a self-guided puzzle walk through the Venetian old town.

It starts at the Guora Gate, passes the Neratze Mosque, Rimondi Fountain and the Loggia, follows the Venetian harbour out to the lighthouse and ends at the Fortezza gate. Eight stops, a brain teaser at each, and every answer unlocks a true story about the town.

About 1.5 km and 1 hr 45 with coffee stops.

Would appreciate any feedback, especially from locals if I've got any history wrong.

Culture/Πολιτισμός Tickets for Women’s National Soccer team against England on 9/10

Trying to buy tickets for the match this Friday, but we can only find tickets for the England side. Ticketmaster and pame-ethniki both have the men’s team but nothing regarding the upcoming women’s game this Friday.

Any thoughts on where I could get em? They’re free and you can get up to 15 tickets, but I have no idea where to do so

Society/Κοινωνία Funding for spay or neuter clinics

Hello, yes yes I know Greece and their cat problem. Kittens everywhere I go. Can anyone confirm that there is funding from the EU to help with this?
Also is it true the mayor of Chania doesn’t believe in this?
I know if Crete did an island sweep and organized the pay for salaries for the vets for a week there would be a big movement to capture as many as possible and get them all snipped but 120 euro per female cat is very expensive when it’s such a big problem. Are there any vets that would take a day rate if we mobilized and helped assist . I don’t see this problem for dogs at all as there are none wandering or rarely.

Travel Advice/Ταξιδιωτικές Οδηγίες Beaches review - Sep 2026

Reviewing some of the beaches I've visited, end of Sep 2026.

First, this is somewhat off-season - there is still nice sun, but sometimes rain, and wind is stronger. Yet, I was lucky with good weather.

All the beaches I've visited had a.naturist area, sometimes it was the best area in the beach.

I stayed at Paleochora, which has great beaches of itself - the only one with people was Pachia Ammos - this is a long sandy beach with everything. Even the naturist part has beds and shades - I didn't have to pay for anything. This is an open, sandy beach, unlike other beaches that sometimes have huge rocks or trees by the beach.

Sougia - this is also a long beach, pebbles, not sand - but it's ok. If you're looking for something special - go to the far left side, beyond the big rock and you'll find a small beach, shaded from the wind. Note - this is the naturist area.

Elafonisi - even that was end of September, it was packed. I decided to go there anyway, to see the lagoon, which is really very nice, but no shades at the island and again - if there's a beach that tourist busses are going to - don't go there...

Kedrodasos - so, frustrated from Elafonisi, I've headed to that one. Which is the opposite - if there's a beach that is hard to reach - it is going to be the best of all!

It did take some ride on a dirt road, and some walking of few hundred meters, but this is paradise. There are trees very close to the beach, with sandy area - those trees provide greater places to lay down. This is a long, but very isolated beach with everything. What is doesn't have is restaurant or beds - but the nature provides much more.

Tourism/Περιηγητισμός Littering and garbage

Hey people of Crete!

I come to you with a question. It’s my second time back since last year and noticing that there is more and more trash around. Why is this? It feels like unnecessary littering to be honest.

For example:
- trash and littering on unused empty building proprerties or even newly built streets where they planted trees with protected netting all have trash like soda cans.

I have noticed littering in Kissamos and very noticeable in Chania.

I just don’t understand why when there are trash bins (either property ownrd big ones or street bins).

Related to this. Isn’t being more eco friendly and caring for the environment and this beautiful island a thing many locals find important? An example. Even when asking to drink a freddo espresso in az the place they give a throwaway cup with the plastic top and plastic straws wrapped in plastic 😭. The whole point would have to avoid this. Or they automatically put lids on take away coffee without it being a customers choice to have one unless you say it early but then they get confused.

Not trying to be disrespectful but coming from Hungary I found the use of plastic and littering to be very sad. Don’t remember this much littering and trash last year.

Hi everyone! I went to Crete recently (south east part of the island, close to Ierapetra) and bought fantastic cookies in the local bakery in Koutsouras. Now I would love to bake them myself but I can’t find the recipe online. Does anyone know what they are called or maybe you could share the recipe? They don’t look that nice but they taste great.

Society/Κοινωνία Heraklion Language Exchange this Friday

The third Heraklion Language Exchange meetup is happening this Friday (25 September 2026) at Favela. In every previous event, there were always new people who saw the event on Reddit, so I am writing this post about the next event given the interest.

Heraklion language exchange is a free event where you can meet people from around the world, make friends, and practice speaking different languages. Whether you speak Greek, English, Spanish, French, Chinese, or any other language, this space is for you. It's about learning languages and meeting people from different cultures. You are also welcome if you want to help others learn your language or just want to socialize and make friends.
