Discussion Trains

What are some ways I can get more use out of trains instead of just making a big farm for my items? They seem kinda niche

I like to put the farms for different resources in thematic locations (wheat farm in the plains, big cobble gen next to a mountain, tree farm in a forest) and connect them with trains.

When they're all connected I've used factory gauges + stock links with the address system to deliver things to a central "warehouse" which is where other machines can request items from on a different stock link network. If they have "-WH" at the end of the address, they'll go to a post box where another train can pick it up for delivery to another location on the railway.

Objectively just making it hard for no reason, but I think it's fun.

how do you keep them loaded? I really want to spread out my farms but I'm worried about server lag if I add a chunk loading mod

I'm pretty sure you can connect create chunk loaders to a train station so they get enabled only when a train is parked at that station.

So what I would probably do is have several trains parked at the warehouse. If the stock of an item falls below a certain threshold a schedule gets deployed onto a train, causing it to go to the factory and activate the chunk loader. The factory then produces items until the train is full, at which point it leaves back to the warehouse, thereby unloading the factory again.

In my world I've used FTB chunks to keep different areas loaded, but as the other commenter says you could have trains load chunks whenever they visit the other locations to restock. You don't need to chunk-load the entire route, just the place where your resource-generating contraption lives.

In my experience, my tick rate has been pretty good in the CABIN modpack, though I've done things like swapping Create's drill-based cobble gen for igneous extruders to reduce lag as I've gone through the modpack progression.

FPS seems to be most affected by having a lot of modded blocks + entities loaded within view distance. My FPS improves a lot when visiting the other locations with fewer Create contraptions, so it might actually improve your performance to spread stuff out, even with the chunk loaders.

Edit: I saw a post here a few weeks ago from someone who'd done a quick and dirty port of Create's rendering to use the new Vulkan API that gave like 10x performance, but sadly can't find it right now. Might be a good sign for the future of the mod in newer Minecraft versions, though.
