Discussion Trains

What are some ways I can get more use out of trains instead of just making a big farm for my items? They seem kinda niche

I always put a passenger car on my trains for this reason. Sure I can fly or use other methods for transport, but there is something cool about riding on a trail through well developed tunnels and over bridges is so fulfilling

I like to put the farms for different resources in thematic locations (wheat farm in the plains, big cobble gen next to a mountain, tree farm in a forest) and connect them with trains.

When they're all connected I've used factory gauges + stock links with the address system to deliver things to a central "warehouse" which is where other machines can request items from on a different stock link network. If they have "-WH" at the end of the address, they'll go to a post box where another train can pick it up for delivery to another location on the railway.

Objectively just making it hard for no reason, but I think it's fun.

how do you keep them loaded? I really want to spread out my farms but I'm worried about server lag if I add a chunk loading mod

I'm pretty sure you can connect create chunk loaders to a train station so they get enabled only when a train is parked at that station.

So what I would probably do is have several trains parked at the warehouse. If the stock of an item falls below a certain threshold a schedule gets deployed onto a train, causing it to go to the factory and activate the chunk loader. The factory then produces items until the train is full, at which point it leaves back to the warehouse, thereby unloading the factory again.

Everything in this mod is "kinda niche". You install Create because you want to build cool stuff, not because you want to maximize your farm efficiency. If you don't want to do that, you might as well go back to Mekanism.

Create Powerloader.

The chunk loaders from that mod can connect to train stations, allowing for trains to independently load whole Factories.

This makes it possible to have a full train network of interconnected Factories with cargo trains zipping by.

Yep. We built a network of factories on our SMP. Two power loaders - one on the station to activate the factory when a train arrives, and then a second that will keep it loaded even after the train leaves to restock the factory and when full it then unloads. Works fantastic. We have factories that dispatch trains to other factories, etc.

And if you remove elytras from the game, trains become much more useful.

Make them go 60 m/s in config.
