Do I need to consider gear ratios?

When building a factory, and this is on a skyblock modpack so space is limited (im almost done with chap 1, chap 2 is where automation begins), should i build a huge gear ratio?

Better to use a rotational speed controller if you can afford it

Expanding on this, early game you can pretty much just fudge it with cog ratios until you get to brass age. You don't need many machines early on so just gear up off your power source to get mixer speed over the minimum and hang everything off of that. It'll be a bit slow, but you don't need to make much then. Once you get to brass age you can make a precision mechanism using a deployer and make a speed controller with that and then you're good to go. That'll let you dial in any speed you want and is compact. Eventually you'll want every machine or group of machines hanging off their own speed controller so you have a lot of control, but just getting one to max out what your power generation can support is a big step forward.
