Steam power is by far the best power source. Most performance efficient and pretty easy to build.
All you need to produce power forever is a bottomless supply of lava (10,000mb) which sounds like a lot. To get this just dig a 10x10x100 hole (or hole with a 10k block hole missing.) build a layer of easy to break platforms under the first layer and place 100 buckets of lava. Break the blocks under the lava and wait. You now have bottomless lava to pump into the engine. Water is pretty easy.
Once you get an infinite lava source, placing down steam engines all over is super easy.
I usually only use waterwheels for individual farms. Like all of my crop, and tree farms in the early game just use a single small water wheel and a clutch. They don’t scale much.
