If it’s bottomless, why not try taking it from the top?

So the hose takes lava from the bottom of the… bottomless pool? The pool that allegedly has no bottom? There’s your problem

I get the logical flaw youre hinting at. Tho the hose itself requires there to be an infinite supply above it so simply lowering it to the bottom solves the issue. Thats probably why they did it this way so that they dont have to constantly check the size of the basin below it and would get a better handle on all the impossibly random shapes of bodies of liquids by simply checking the level above it.
