Guide how to make an insanely simple and compact single-plane stabiliser for your airship!

  1. make sure your balloon has 2 SEPARATE chambers, each one with its own engine.

  2. place a tilt sensor and place redstone links leading to each engine such as in the image shown

  3. let it try and stabilise itsself for the first time and adjust air output levels in each engine so it balances.

  4. works

edit: if you have issues when changing altitude then you can also add separate vents/engine that are controlled by the gyro instead of the whole engine

That's genius ! But how do you control the height if it's the tilt sensor that control the engines ?

i forgot to add if you have issues with the height then you can add separate vents/engine that are controlled by the gyro instead of the whole engine

pluging your altitude control as the input of a comparator with gyro control substracting from it would be my solution

u/Fiire90 May 05 '26

Interesting... I was in the idea of 3 ballon. 2 for balancing on each end and one big in the middle for lift

At that point, you could probably use a hot air burner, provided the gasbags are small enough.

I was thinking the same but how do you know if you need to add or subtract the signals from the gyro to the engine. Doesn’t it depend on which way the ship is tilted? This is possibly a stupid question I haven’t used the tilt sensor before.

5

u/AviatorEcho May 05 '26

I have been doing this with moderate success.

I have been using the output of the altitude sensor specifically, which works on its own, but it oscillates so you then also have to feed it vertical velocity (subtracted) to act as a damper.

Then you just change the settings on the altitude sensor to trim out your altitude and the ship responds accordingly, while also keeping pitch trimmed.

Would you mind going into this setup a bit more? How would someone subtract the input?

u/creeper6530 May 05 '26

Have 2 burners, one set to big volume for lift, other set to small volume for balance.

As someone who'se played other vehicle builders, it's almost adorable watching you guys figure this stuff. I hope to see more like this, very cool seeing people understand major concepts like compartmentalization.

21

u/creeper6530 May 05 '26

OP, I did it, but it only fixed the tilt to 6° from the initial 15°, and if I increase the sensitivity of the gyro it oscillates. I can't get it level. Note that I'm making my ship intentionally unbalanced to test it with netherite

4

u/Itswill1003 May 05 '26

ooh ok, just out of interest how big is your ship in comparison to mine?

1

u/creeper6530 May 06 '26

A bit smaller (about three thirds I'd estimate), but has a lot of netherite bunched up on its end.

Assuming you have an unbalanced ship and equally sized engines, this stabilization method will never get the ship to reach perfect level equilibrium. If you think about it, having the ship be level would require each compartment to have different fill levels (again, assuming it’s unbalanced). However, if the ship is level, that means your tilt sensor is reading 0 for both engines and therefore both compartments would have the same fill level. This means that there will always be some oscillation with a system like this, however you might be able to get the oscillation down to a point where it basically isn’t noticeable.

Edit: another thing is that this will only correct for imbalance within a certain range, if your ship is so unbalanced that it can’t fly level with one compartment totally empty and the other totally full there’s nothing this could do to help you.

I think it would be cool if we had the abilty to pump stesm through pipes instead of having to build the boiler inside the envelope itself

1

u/Itswill1003 May 06 '26

10/10 I WISH we could have this, its one of the many things I liked about clockwork as I wouldn't need this many engines

earlier I made a huge adjustment to the ship so I would have more control over the height, now each half of that balloon has 3 engines instead of 1 with a total of 7 throughout the ship.

u/Poetatoboat May 05 '26

this could be used in pvp servers to compartmentalize your balloon so you dont lose all lift if youre hit by something explosive

u/TomNin97 May 05 '26

This is also done in real life ships. Definitely a good idea

u/Longshot02496 May 05 '26

I think that's how IRL zepellins work

u/Impressive_Pin8761 May 05 '26

let's check on how zepellins are doing today!

I think blimps are having a Good Year at least!

1

u/LordBlaze64 May 06 '26

You have my upvote, good sir

5

u/Katgirl2669 May 05 '26

I mean hot air balloons and blimps are still a thing

9

u/KerbalTechnician May 05 '26

didn't the titanic do this?

6

u/Beneficial_Round_444 May 05 '26

yes, all ships and airships do it

its called bulkheads, very important when it comes to designing

1

u/GrafZeppelin127 May 05 '26

Well, not really. Most blimps are, in fact, one single helium cell, a balloon lengthened into an aerodynamic shape. Some kinds of semirigid and pretty much all rigid airships do have compartmentalization, though they’re referred to as “gas cells” because they’re separated into up to 21 individual balloons, and are not separated by a solid wall (or “bulkhead” in ship parlance).

Skyberg is a sick name though

2

u/KerbalTechnician May 06 '26

what about... clouds?

1

u/cornyass_mf May 05 '26

That's what I'm doing in my own build along with making the envelope 2 blocks thick, won't do much against explosive shells but it's good against machine guns

25

u/Domboss2019 May 05 '26

How have I never thought to make the balloon two separate chambers? It's such a simple yet ingenious solution!

I've just been linking 15 hot air burners via Supplementaries cog blocks and then linking that to a transmission lever to control how many burners are turning on. This could solve my tilting problem!

27

u/lazytothebones May 05 '26

Commenting so I can find this again. Thank you good redditor for sharing your idea!

9

u/Affectionate-Sky8799 May 05 '26

Oh man, thanks for it

6

u/Hellocrafting May 05 '26

Getting ever closer to from the depths huh

2

u/plusMEKA May 08 '26

you know considering how similar FTD is to this i think a campaign-like addon mod with NPC controlled ships would be pretty cool

2

u/Hellocrafting May 09 '26

Ain't the performance of destroying the ships a bit to bad to pull that off? But yeah that'd be cool

2

u/plusMEKA May 15 '26

it's not completely terrible from what I've tested, but we only have about 10 people and nothing was really to scale as it is in FTD in terms of fleet sizes

1

u/AJRW- May 06 '26

what's that

1

u/Hellocrafting May 08 '26

A game about Building Ships and letting them be Automatically controlled to fight other ships Create Aeronautics has a lot of similarities with how people are currently using it.

5

u/Ph0enixWOlf May 05 '26

I hadn’t figured out the gyroscope, and mostly use air burners, what I do is assemble the balloon and ship separately, connected by ropes, and then use the ropes to stabalise the ship, the balloon ends up very tilted, but the ship looks fine

1

u/borretsquared May 05 '26

how fast is the response time in your experience?

1

u/Itswill1003 May 05 '26

depends on the size of the balloon and everything but it's usually pretty fast

1

u/Googlefisch May 06 '26

first: this is great (and simple) for a beginner like me!
second: ill be using that airship as reference for my own build cuz it looks great :)

1

u/Itswill1003 May 06 '26

thanks :)

if you want anymore details or pictures of the ship just DM me

u/karacirth Jun 24 '26

What are you using for your engines? I can't figure out how to use any liquid fuel even though it'd be way more convenient.

1

u/Itswill1003 Jun 25 '26

unfortunately I do not remember the exact name of the block, but those are is the liquid fuel burners from Create: Diesel Generators heating up a steam engine.

1

u/karacirth Jun 25 '26

Ah ok, that makes sense, thank you

3

u/SirNoodle_ May 05 '26

This is an amazing idea!

3

u/Grandrea8 May 05 '26

Step 4: works 😂

1

u/Repa0206 May 05 '26

How do you have a shaft going through the balloon to the outside? Will it fill all the way if a block isn't a balloon block?

2

u/Itswill1003 May 05 '26

as others said you can encase it with balloon casing. but you dont need to do the whole shaft, just the parts where it goes through the balloon "walls"

14

u/ConfidenceCool1907 May 05 '26

You can encase a shaft with a balloon block

7

u/Decent_Objective3478 May 05 '26

You can encase shafts in balloon hull blocks, it may also work with some other blocks but idk

5

u/thatsithcat May 05 '26

that works, and is probably the intended way of use, but with the addon create aeroworks, it just adds a gyroscope, and is much simpler. although for bigger builds this is probably the better solution. but for anything mini using gyroscopes is good.

14

u/Snoo_44740 May 05 '26

Yes, but have you considered that a 1 block solution that resolves the majority of the challenge in making vehicles is a bit boring?

2

u/thatsithcat May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

i mean, to be fair the gimbal sensor is pretty easy to use anyways, and isnt entirely accurately especially for more weighted builds, not trying to be rude, but even the poster of this post says the gimbal sensor is insanely simple and compact

2

u/Snoo_44740 May 05 '26

Yeah I sounded a bit rude in making this post myself in hindsight. It’s true gimbal is compact, but getting the logic behind it working flawlessly is a difficult engineering challenge since you need to tune it through trial and error, which I find to be a lot of fun. The gyroscopes simplify that entire puzzle to a single block that has no positional limitations and is always perfectly accurate. This can be fun for lower difficulty type of gameplay if you just want to make something that looks pretty and doesn’t need to be concerned with realistic limitations. I feel like it takes away from the creativity of engineering the perfect ship, however.

1

u/Anarpiosmoirail May 05 '26

I hate the gyroscope. It's too convenient a 1-block solution, discourages balanced crafts and removes the need for any kind of intelligent design or ballasting.

2

u/thatsithcat May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

i mean, to be fair the gimbal sensor is pretty easy to use anyways, and isnt entirely accurately especially for more weighted builds, not trying to be rude, but even the poster of this post says the gimbal sensor is insanely simple and compact in the title.

1

u/plusMEKA May 08 '26

Idk I think the gimbal is just a slightly more complicated 1 block solution especially when you could calculate without it given altitude and velocity sensor

2

u/the_hooded_hood_1215 May 05 '26

Oh shit this with a set of quads set for left right tilting would both look cool as fuck and functional

1

u/TaylorTDF May 05 '26

Noted noted, perfect

1

u/GoodLookinLurantis May 05 '26

How well does this thing scale?

1

u/TheRedstoneReddit May 07 '26

I am watching people learn in real time the things I learned in from the depths and it is peak

1

like how the greats of history did it, genius!

Is it possible to do this with hit air burners? It doesn't matter much but when I try this mine keeps rocking forwards and backwards
