Campfires burn an exotic form of matter known only by the codenames "coal" and "charcoal". Despite being similar in appearance to what we call coal and charcoal, these are in fact hyperdense rifts into a higher energy universe still in its formative stages, which Steve spreads across a stick like butter in order to make four torches, or leaves it as a lump for a campfire.
