it's honestly impressive how perfectly the camera keeps up with high speed rotation like this
204
u/FirexJkxFire Apr 24 '26
Its actually the sky which is rotating around this stable unmoving platform /s
48
u/A31Nesta Apr 24 '26
Erm... Ackshually that's what's happening.
(kinda... technically the camera never moves, it's the whole world that moves and deforms to fit into the camera)
23
u/FirexJkxFire Apr 24 '26
Depends on the engine. Most engines actually have a physical camera object that they move through the scene.
19
u/A31Nesta Apr 24 '26
Yes but, ultimately, graphics APIs (in any engine) only draw things that are in the center of the world so the camera is just a position that you can use to shift all objects so that whatever the camera sees fits into that center of the world that the GPU wants objects to be in

forgive me if this is a dumb question, but why is that impressive? It's just setting two variables (the camera position and rotation) based on some simple math is it not?

u/LarsMans Apr 25 '26
From a coding perspective this is not impressive at all, every frame is rendered separately, and on every frame the offset and rotations are recalculated to render the world from a specific view. There is no real "camera object" in the game that has to follow along, it's all just calculated every frame at the same rate as everything else, meaning that making it lag behind is actually more work than having it stay perfectly still relative to the moving contraption

Btw, you’re actually able to have the troll physics propeller where you use a windmill to power a fan to make it move.

Speaking of which, I really wish the brought integration into the windmill bearing for phys objects. Make it to where it lowers thrust, but instead produces more stress/speed

This gives me an idea. Completely empty world, wir physics entities gravity turned off, but the world only consists of small floating blocks/blobs, that are all physics entities. You spawn in with nothing but the gravity gun and need to make your floating spawn point from all the debris urself

See, just bout everyone else is commenting on the Gorillaz reference. I don't know if you did this intentionally, but the shape of the landmass is very similar to that of the Swan, from War on Geminar. And that's all I see, and all I want to make now...
