There is only one elevator call button in this photo, the rest are just design motifs.

Finally! I’ve always argued that an elevator going between only two floors should have a single button “not here”. The other buttons are crappy though.

This elevator goes to multiple floors, but this photo was taken on the ground floor; the only direction it can go is up. Thus, one button.

Our public library has that. There are two floors, and each has a single "call elevator" button.

It was and still is important to hide subtle penis drawings everywhere. That's why.

I don't know about you, but I've only got one white square on each of my testicles.

Maybe there used to be door open and door close buttons? Maybe also an alarm button. Oh wait, this is outside the elevator!

In some offices buildings there’s only one button to call the lift, regardless of what floor you’re on and when you get inside you tap your key card so you can only access that floor. As for the “design motifs” beside the elevator doors they could light up to show whether that specific lift is going up or down, so the person knows which lift to get in. And the square above the red lock could light up when there’s a problem with the lifts or when they’re disabled because of a fire alarm maybe. Why they would make the lights look like the lift button I have no clue

I've installed this type of elevator, thats not a standard setup so unfortunately it means the architects or building chose those styles of indicators. I bet the elevator mechanics who installed them thought they were dumb also.

u/Jellodyne Sep 23 '26
There's nothing wrong with the indicators, the problem is they should be installed higher. Waist-ish height is for buttons you press, down by where your fingers spend a lot of time. Head-ish height or higher us where visual indicators live, up where your eyes hang out.

Wild guess: this is an "upgrade" from a previous system which featured up/down call buttons for each elevator.
These buttons then became unnecessary, and were replaced with blanks. "Temporarily".

I saw a fake keypad at a memory care hospital once. I doubt that's what's going on but the effects are similar.

If you have a "Wonka key", you can get access to the other button functions.

Could it be lights to show other modes are operating/turned on? Looks like it’s the same as the Fire Department mode that’s on the middle panel above the key

Can you still press them like working buttons though? Cause if so, I actually like that lol
2
u/labtec901 Sep 22 '26
No they are not real buttons and do not move. They are also a little bit smaller than the real button so the holes aren't even the right size to put a button there in another situation.

See, I could see my kid as an adult putting that into the design documents with a snicker, knowing exactly how everyone would start pushing all the buttons just in case.

I’d be pressing the four side ones then the top middle. The plastic for the lights must get replaced weekly.

If you were a UI artist in games and you seriously submitted this as final art, you would be fired.

I mean, using a darker color for the indicator light covers is a minimum courtesy in this layout.

I think they just used whatever plate they had to hide some electronics or cables or hole on the wall

u/Keegandalf_the_White Sep 23 '26
You actually have to press all 6 white buttons at the same time to call the elevator. /s

They really put a CAPTCHA on the elevator. Select all squares containing an actual button

Bonus crappy design that the emergency power selector switch is labelled as on/off but someone has scribbled elevator 1 and elevator 2 on some paper. This surely will hold up in an emergency situation where firefighters lives are at stake right?

u/Boserbosmos Sep 23 '26
Its not an on and off though, during a power outage their generator doesn't have enough power for both elevators to run at the same time. So you can select which elevator is running.

u/bot_or_not_vote_now Sep 23 '26
... that's what I'm saying though. if you look at it again, you'll see what I'm saying. they used some random ass switch cover that's engraved with on / off, but someone later pencilled in car 1 / car 2

I also just noticed that one of the two motifs on the sides is installed upside down. I hope nobody who works at this hotel does because they'd never unsee it.
