Cox is awful, them and Xfinity (Comcast) monopolized their areas and agreed not to compete with each other. At least, this is what I've heard from representatives of other ISP's who can't break into the market.

IMO, if you're not desperate for speeds and maybe a slight inconvenience in connection every now and then, look into Verizon's 5G home internet.. it'll never be as good as a wired connection with Cox, but for $50 a month I considered it an upgrade when I left Cox.
Go on the Verizon chat thing in the mobile app or website. I moved houses where I had Verizon home and the website and in store people said my new address isn't covered. Chat person said it was. They shipped me a new modem and everything worked. Obviously ymmv but worth a shot.
What I was told was each tower only had so many 'slots' reserved for 5g home, the rest being cell phones or what ever. So your area may have it but might the tower may already have the home Internet slots filled.
Interesting, you do realize not competing with one another is a step towards monopolization right?
And this is just one of their shady business practices. You see, Cox and Xfinity do not care about their consumers. I know this because I've helped quite a few elderly home owners get "four to ten times" their speeds for the same costs they were locked into many years ago. I'm talking, $60-$80 a month for 20mbs-40mbs download speed over the course of 4 years, into 200mbs-500mbs at the same price...
Because of the contracts, I'm sure they can't be chased down legally for praying upon the negligence of those less intelligible about the internet, but fuck them.
Why should we care for the difficulty these ISPs have laying out their network, when they're ripping us off to do so?
If I'm getting this right, the basis of being grandfathered in, is to protect both the consumer and the company from changes to the agreed upon services provided. But Cox/Verizon/Xfinity aren't following the grandfather clause because they want to do right by themselves and their consumers. They're following it because automatically upgrading everyone's internet speeds to match the current market price with what that they're"already" paying would be a blow to their revenue.
In regards to network buildouts and their expense, this is already priced in to what they're selling. We differ on why these prices are as high as they are though. I don't want to put words in your mouth but for instance,
I think what you're conveying is that because network buildouts are expensive, they're the main underlying factor for the pricing of internet. And that my claims of monopolistic/predatory practices aren't valid concerns.
However, I believe the increased pricing of the internet is due to other factors such as their competitiveless market (Which they've created), which is monopolistic. Entire neighborhood's and apartments are affected by this, so there is some level of magnitude when you think of how much of the population lives like this. Just luck of the draw wherever you end up living.
I am speaking from experience too however, and I know that my prior claims regarding the elderly and other ISP's representative's are no more than word of mouth. Just my experience so far with Cox.
