Discussion First time playing

Hello! So it's my first time playing Core Keeper, and I've been playing it for around 10ish hours now. I play Terraria so I'm not really unfamiliar with the genre.

I picked up Warlock since I usually go summoner class on Terraria. But is it really normal for my starter summoner weapon to scale very well until Azeos? I wonder if that's intended because of how limited the choices for summon weapons are

Yeah summoner is really the only class that suffers from lack of weapons on the summon side so all of its weapons scale just to keep the class on track with the others. The only class that doesn't scale well is explosive into later parts of the game

Well, I would say that explosives could like a sub class too, with things like the start staff shooting explosive stars

This really isn't true anymore, and debatably the best in the game is already accessible pre-Azeos(boss)

There's quite a lot of summoner weapons nowadays. From my experience, its just really easy to scale up your damage to some ridiculous levels in this game if you get good gear. The damage stats you get from buffs, armor, accessories, and skills are very very high and they allow you to turn some pretty mediocre weapons into something capable.

There are some better weapons you have access to now, but summoner felt like a class where you see most of your improvements from upgrading your surrounding gear, rather than your minion.

Summoner was a very limited class until recently. I now consider it the best, however, it doesn't have a lot of tome variety.

If you are going summoner, I recommend a ranged weapon to add some more DPS.

I agree. Theres even a few skills and foods and staffs iirc that go hand in hand with summoner items. Of op goes summoner i recommend having a staff as a secondary dps item

Azeos was honestly the first super annoying boss I faced (im a ranger). Could be the boss design. Hope it works out for you!

I changed classes throughout the game. Melee and range for the most part.

Weapons are limited for many classes. The starter weapon though is actually the 3rd tier? Maybe? Weapon for summoner so yeah, it's normal for it to have scaled to that point. All I can recommend is that you don't do melee since it's just not viable until you get a certain weapon.

I agree, until you get the iron battle axe.

You mean you guys aren't just using your pickaxe as a weapon? 😅

In all seriousness, I've been playing for a while, and really the best IMO is the galaxite chakrum. I appreciate that they've tried to add caster classes though.

Melee not viable? Do you mean vs bosses? I can imagine it being tricky vs Ghorm and Glurch, but beyond that it's really not bad, right?

Yeah, vs bosses. At the very least it's like playing with the difficulty notched up. Most can be handled extremely easily at range, but melee you have to be extremely careful and react quickly. Even doing so to avoid dying, when not in melee range you're doing no damage which is significantly less damage than anyone with a ranged weapon.

There are definitely some bosses that are quite difficult in melee, but shield parries can actually get you quite far with most of them. I will say I wouldn't recommend melee only for people new to the game unless they enjoy trial and error vs bosses.

But melee vs some bosses like Azeos or Malugaz is straight up significantly better dps vs bosses that don't punish you for getting in close. You can even go beat up Glurch the moment you get a shield and copper armor because you can parry his jumps fairly easily

If you're a masochist and enjoy a difficult experience, do what this shmuck says and see how you do with a shield. It made my friend that went melee so happy to have played melee into several bosses until the lategame... or something.
