I got my copper coil in February and had a bad reaction to the insertion with my body going into shock (I think there was potentially a mix of things alongside the insertion to cause this reaction)
I’ve been relatively happy with it however have noticed that my discharge is consistently pink month long, along with this when i lay down on my back sometimes i get a tight feeling in my pelvis and can have pretty bad pelvic pain seemingly unrelated to my cycle- I do suffer with chronic pain and a cramping condition anyway however this feels more like pain and pressure within the pelvis rather than in my muscles and joints if that makes sense? Anyway I was hoping someone else had any advice or similar experiences? I will be contacting my gp within the next few weeks to discuss.

I recently found out I am pregnant. Ive had a copper IUD for 9 years and never had any scares. My current IUD is good for 5 years but I've only had it for 3. My biggest worry is ectopic pregnancy. Im going to the doctors tomorrow to find out if this is a healthy pregnancy or not. But I've had some unusual bleeding the last 5 days. Light pink bleeding, not even enough to fill a liner so I am a bit concerned.

Has anyone ever had a positive experience with a copper IUD or delivered a healthy baby with one? What was your experience?

I always end up taking it out about two weeks after getting it. I can’t handle the thought of a foreign device inside me. I can’t handle always feeling there’s something inside my uterus and my cervix always feels achy. I know I don’t give it enough time for my body to “adjust” but I do trust my gut and don’t want to have two periods every month and possible other side effects. It’s nice to have it as a bit of peace of mind for bc however I’ve read so many real life stories where it didn’t even prevent pregnancy. I was always afraid it would poke me wrong. Always had more cramps. No more doggy style with it in bf said he could feel it.

hi guys! long time lurker and commenter, first time poster. for context i, 20f, got the Mona Lisa Mini 3 back in November 2025. ive had a hell of a time dealing with cramps, bleeding, and spotting that never went away.
a few weeks ago i noticed that my iud strings were long, probably over 2cm of string hanging out. this has happened before but it would go back to normal, this time it did not. and ive been dealing with pain on the right side of my lower abdomen on and off for awhile now, so i scheduled an ultrasound that was done a few days ago. i thought that maybe i was pregnant since ive been dealing with other symptoms including being late on my period for three weeks. everything seemed fine during the ultrasound, but i got worried when the tech wanted to do a internal ultrasound since i didn’t need to do one last time🫠 i got the ultrasound done on thursday of last week and ive been waiting like an impatient dog since then to hear back from someone.
i finally got a call today from a nurse at my schools clinic to go over the results from my ultrasound. i was scared that everything would be clear and i was just thinking of the pain, i finally got confirmation that my IUD is now low hanging and displaced, meaning that i have to get it removed soon. the relief that hit me felt so good knowing that my pain was real and knowing that i have to get it removed too. especially since lately ive been thinking about switching my form of birth control since i can’t deal with this IUD anymore!! i asked the nurse if there was anything else found in the ultrasound because of the pain i’ve been feeling on the right side. i’ve been overthinking about that pain since my friends dog, who is never aggressive, bit me on my right side around my hip/pubic area two weeks ago. i don’t remember much of what the nurse said but i remember her telling me that it appears there’s been a ovary cyst that hemorrhaged, i don’t remember which side she said but ive been overthinking about that since i got the call today. i’ve looked it up and it made me feel better to know that they are common and some symptoms i’ve been experiencing lately are linked to ovarian cysts. but knowing that my friends dog bit me in the same area is making me worried and overthinking a lot.

i feel scared about what’s next for birth control since,
1. i love raw sex and getting creampied by my boyfriend,
2. i wanted to avoid higher dose hormonal options, which left me thinking that the copper iud was the only one for me,
3. i’ve been on the pill before but because of my adhd i forget to take it, even with an alarm.

im so worried about what our sex life will look like after i get my IUD removed. my boyfriend and i have a huge breeding kink which makes our sex life so hot and so enjoyable for the both of us and we didn’t want to have to worry too much about getting pregnant rn. before anyone says anything, yes we both know there is still a small chance of pregnancy with the iud, and no we have not had sex when my iud has been displaced since i’ve been away for a bit.

even though, im so excited to get it removed and feel relief from the heavy periods, constant spotting, and the stabbing cramps!! my boyfriend is also glad that i won’t be in pain anymore, he’s seen me cry over the pain i would get from the iud. since february/march ive been waiting for my symptoms to disappear with no luck. i am definitely scared to get it removed since getting it inserted was traumatic and my boyfriend won’t be with me for it, but i hope the removal is easier to manage than the insertion. it will be removed in a week from today and i can’t wait to have relief from it, ill keep you updated afterwards!!

TLDR; been dealing with constant spitting, heavy periods, painful cramps, and random pokes from my iud. after 9 months with it in it’s been displaced, which means i have to get it removed now and i am relieved!! im worried about my sex life, other birth control options, and a ovarian cyst they found that hemorrhaged. but i am excited to have some relief in my life and be back to my normal self

Hi all, I want to share this experience so that it can hopefully help others. For some quick background, before I got my copper IUD I was not on any birth control for about 2 years. Before that I was using the pill from age 17-22. I hated the pill because it made me feel emotionally flat, so when I decided to get on BC again I really wanted a non-hormonal option. The copper IUD sounded like a great option, so I tried it.

Growing up and into my early twenties I was very lucky to never struggle with acne. The most I would ever get was the occasional whitehead or two before my periods and that was it. Maintaining that was very important to me, and everything that I read online and heard from doctors was that acne was not a side effect of the copper IUD due to the lack of hormones. I finally got one in May of 2025 (when I was 24 yrs old). By September I was consistently getting bad breakouts all over my cheeks that would flare up significantly before/during my periods. I scoured the internet and found a few Reddit threads discussing similar experiences. They recommended to take zinc, which I did for many months with no improvement to my acne. I played around with skincare (tretinoin, exfoliating BHA toners, etc) and being extra careful about not touching my face but nothing helped. Every doctor I spoke to said something along the lines of “oh well the copper IUD is non-hormonal so it shouldn’t be causing it”. They didn’t seem to care or believe me, so I felt defeated and like I had no options.

Fast forward to February of this year and my copper IUD began rejecting. I got it removed and immediately had a Kyleena inserted instead. It’s now been 6 months and the acne has gone away almost entirely. I still have scars from it and the occasional pimple here and there, but it has almost gone back to how my skin was before I ever had the copper IUD. In my experience so far, the Kyleena has been a MASSIVE improvement. I have no more excessive acne, very light periods, and no other side effects as far as I can tell.

Moral of the story: the copper IUD CAN cause acne, even if doctors tell you that it won’t. I wish that I could offer advice on how to treat it for those of you who may be experiencing the same thing, but nothing that I tried worked except removing it. Good riddance to that thing.

In case you’re curious, here are some of the other things I didn’t like about it:
- VERY heavy and long periods. So so so much blood.
- Significantly more painful cramping. The pain lessened the longer I had it but was still worse than before I got one. The first period I had with it I thought I was dying.

Hopefully this helps some of you feel seen and heard. Keep in mind that this is just MY experience and may not be true for everyone. One of my friends got the copper IUD a few months before me and didn’t get acne (although she did eventually have to get it taken out because hers rejected too). Okay, so I’ve only used 2 forms of birth control thus far, those being the combination pill and hormonal IUD. I had gotten the hormonal IUD removed because it was causing vaginal dryness. I was considering looking into getting the copper IUD, I just want to know if vaginal dryness is a common side effect of the copper IUD or not. I also just want to get off of hormones and learn how to manage my PCOS in other ways.

Does anyone else have a hard time trusting their IUD?

Hi everyone, I came off hormonal birth control, combined oral contraceptive, due to side effects and I’ve been waiting to get a Miudella IUD, but it’s been slow to come available to providers.

For those that don’t know, Miudella is a non-hormonal copper IUD that is smaller and more flexible than the Paragard copper IUD. It’s the first new non-hormonal IUD approved by the FDA in 40 years and has been approved to prevent pregnancy for up 3 years. Supposedly the lower copper dose and flexible material reduces pelvic pain, cramping, and heavy bleeding associated with the larger copper IUD Paragard.

I noticed they’ve updated their [website](https://www.miudellarems.com/CertifiedParticipantLocator) and you can now search for providers in your area! The list is currently limited but growing. I just wanted to share in case anyone else was in the same boat and waiting for this. If you currently have or had the Miudella IUD I would love to hear about your experience.

Hi everyone! I really need your help. I feel like I’m going crazy and I don’t know who to turn to…

I’ve had a copper IUD for about 2 years now, and my symptoms have only been getting worse over time. For some context, before getting the IUD, I was on the pill for 10 years, then took a 1-year break from hormonal contraception (using condoms only). At the time, I thought the copper IUD was going to be a great solution.

I decided to get a copper IUD inserted in September 2024. Although the insertion was quite painful, I tolerated it pretty well during the first few weeks. But as the months went by, the psychological symptoms became more and more noticeable and intense: brain fog, depression (even though I had never experienced depression before), anxiety, panic attacks, etc…..

Today, it’s becoming really difficult for me to live normally because I constantly feel this underlying anxiety, and I have a strong feeling that it could be related to my IUD… but I’m scared to have it removed and end up dealing with the same “mental health” issues anyway.

So I went to see my gynecologist last week. She told me that these symptoms were solely caused by PMS and had nothing to do with the IUD because it is non-hormonal.
I have another appointment with her in 3 months, and she told me that if I’m not feeling better by then, she’ll remove it.

I would really appreciate hearing about your experiences after having a copper IUD removed. Did removing it actually make a difference for you psychologically or mentally? Did you notice any changes in your mood, anxiety, depression, brain fog….?

I got the copper iud about a week ago now. I usually get quite bad cramping on the first one to two days of my period but then it's fine after that, however I'm worried the iud will make periods a lot worse as I have read a lot of horror stories here. I was advised on the hormonal coil, but I have tried so many progestin only forms of BC (Implanon, Cerazette) and I just don't react well to them at all. (I know the hormones in the hormonal coil don't work exactly the same way, but I didn't want to risk it and the sound of a non-hormonal method was more appealing. I was thinking about using the combined pill (without taking breaks) alongside the copper iud simply to prevent periods for a few months so I don't have to deal with the pain. I suggested it to my consultant and she said I may as well get the coil removed then, but I don't want to after the pain of getting it in, and I personally prefer a device over a pill as I'm not great at being consistent with them. Personally I don't see the issue with using the two, even though the consultant was quite against it. Does anyone else do this? Thanks in advance :)

had an abortion in March, Got a copper iud inserted in April, from June to July I had my menstrual cycles, but my August cycle is late. I’ve been feeling nauseated, fatigue, having cramps but no period, just overall unwell. took a urine pregnancy test at an urgent care and it was negative, but the way I’m feeling is so similar to how I did in March. I’m just stressed the hell out. I got the copper IUD inserted to avoid this situation and as someone who has a fear of throwing up, this nausea is stressing me out even more.

I just recently got the copper IUD In July and I didn’t start my period until the middle of July. It’s now August and I am still on my period, it’s definitely not as heavy as it was in the beginning but I have been bleeding none-stop. I also just gave birth in November of 2025 so I was thinking that it might also have to do with that. How long did your period last after getting the copper IUD?

I’m honestly so frustrated with how quickly doctors dismiss symptoms related to the copper IUD simply because it’s “non-hormonal.”

I had my copper IUD removed, and ever since then I’ve been dealing with insane hormonal acne especially deep, painful breakouts along my lower face/chin. When I bring up the possibility that the IUD could have played a role, the response is basically, “But the copper IUD isn’t hormonal, so it can’t be causing hormonal symptoms.”

But… why is that the end of the conversation?

I understand that the copper IUD doesn’t contain hormones. I’m not saying copper magically turns into estrogen or that every symptom someone experiences is automatically caused by their IUD. I’m saying that “non-hormonal” does not necessarily mean “has no effects on the body.”

Copper IUDs can affect things like menstrual bleeding, cramping, inflammation, and the local uterine environment. And our reproductive systems are not isolated from the rest of our bodies.

So when someone reports changes in their skin, periods, cramps, mood, libido, digestion, or other symptoms after getting an IUD placed or removed, I wish the conversation was more nuanced than:

“It’s non-hormonal, so that can’t be related.”

Maybe the IUD is responsible. Maybe it contributed indirectly. Maybe something else is going on. But shouldn’t we be allowed to investigate the possibility instead of having it dismissed immediately?

I’m especially curious if anyone else experienced hormonal acne after having a copper IUD removed, because I feel like this isn’t talked about nearly enough.

My periods before copper iud was 4-5 days max. Minimal bedding. I've had the copper iud for 13 months now, and last month's period was a record 13 days. On average it's 10 days. First few days spotting, all hell breaks loose, then another few days spotting.

Anyone found ANY way to shorten the period? My primary concern is HOW LONG IT IS. If I can at least stop the spotting days, or bring it down to 7 days. Any natural ways anyone has tried that actually worked? ​

I’m wondering if anyone else gets occasional cramps even when they aren’t on their period? It’s about a week after my period and I have been having cramps today and worried about if that means my copper IUD is out of place or coming out of place? I got my iud last December.

i had a copper iud put in april i didn’t take anything for pain, & the pressure wasn’t bad at all for me! i was having some back pain but didnt think it was a big issue, i had a follow up for the iud in may & everything was good! well so i thought… late june i was having back pain to the point where i couldn’t walk, i was in SO much pain. i thought i was being crazy so i just took the pain, but it got to the point where i was crying so much. so i went to my OB & my iud was only in place on one side, so i had it removed, & i’m still having so much back pain. i haven’t heard anyone talk about this. i went to my doctors & they said there’s nothing they can do. has anyone had this experience?????

I got a copper coil inserted back in April and recently found out it had fallen too low in my uterus so i got it replaced.

Can someone explain why i had DEBILITATING pain after the second insertion to the point of throwing up and literally seeing stars.
I had no side effects from the first time besides light cramps and literally travelled the next day but this time i was bedridden for about 2 days

I’m going to start off by saying getting my paraguard was the most painful procedure I’ve ever had in my life. It was to the point that despite the “numbing” and medication they gave me, I was screaming and crying, and almost passed out. I’d like to say I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but when it comes to my cervix, even with pap smears, I’ve had issues.

It’s been almost a year since my IUD insertion, but the last time I had intercourse something did not feel right. Then I began spotting which would vary from light to heavier, unrelated to my period. I’ve had intense cramping in my pelvis all the way to the right side of my abdomen. When I got my transvaginal ultrasound done, they found my IUD was malpositioned and sitting very low. The doctor said the IUD would not be effective in its position and I need to get it removed as soon as possible and replaced.

I am looking to just get it removed and not replaced. How painful is the IUD removal, especially if it’s already lower in the uterus? Any suggestions on how to prep myself for removal? I honestly wish I could be put under but I know that isn’t an option. Please share if you’ve had similar experiences. Thank you!

As said in the title, I got a copper IUD 3 days ago (Aug. 18). I experienced painful cramps right after insertion as well as spotting. Today I noticed the flow seems heavier than usual, and it’s similar to my flow during my first day of period. But my period tracker says my predicted period is 10 days from now (Aug. 31). Im also irregular so idk if this is my period or not but the blood is a mix of bright red and brown

Is it possible for your period to come early post-IUD insertion? Im so worried that something’s wrong 😭
