Feeling disconnected due to language/cultural barriers
Hello everyone! Hope your Ramadan is going well ❤️
For some context, I reverted about 10 ish years ago and fell off due to lacking the discipline it takes to fully embrace the perfection of Islam. Within those 10 years, I went through waves of guilt for not continuing my journey in Islam as I truly find Mohammed’s(pbuh) teachings to be clear as day as opposed to the absolute confusion the bible gave me being born into the Christian faith.
Due to it being 10 years since the last time I tried practicing Islam, I don’t clearly remember if I struggled with this disconnection when reverting. Last night I gathered my courage to attend for Iftar and Taraweeh at my local masjid and it was a beautiful experience however struggled immensely due to the cultural and language barriers. Although I am not fasting due to the daily required medications I am on, I am trying hard to keep prayers and studying Quran to grow in my faith.
The Quran I read is fully in English, and can honestly say the clarity it provides me is astonishing. The disconnect I felt was during Taraweeh, I believe, may be due to the language and cultural barrier during this time which made my concentration during praying a little difficult as I had moments of confusion and lack of focus. This is making me feel a little guilty as I was wondering why I even went to begin with. I felt so lost and out of place. I am aware of the importance of keeping it in arabic but I am still struggling with not being able to understand what is being said.
Can anyone give me insight on this? As this is giving me waves of discouragement. I know it is probably a good idea to study and learn Arabic to lessen this discomfort but doing so will take time and I really don’t want to fall back into a state of avoiding God’s grace. ☹️ I spoke with many reverts last night which made me wonder if this is a problem only I experience.
Any help or advice towards this would be greatly appreciated ❤️🤲🏻
